tried shutting down but the PS3 didn't allow, gave 3 beeps. hard disk shows no activity. how? =\ forced it to shut down already but still same results. This post has been edited by nerd: Jul 2 2008, 03:28 PM |

no power surge no nothing.. I let it install after downloading, then when I checked back, there's only the XMB background without the icons. no hard disk activity. the machine doesn't allow a soft reset, so I tried a hard one.. still the same thing.
I updated via wireless, not via thumbdrive.. =\ can I download the update to a thumbdrive and allow the PS3 to reinstall it? This post has been edited by nerd: Jul 2 2008, 03:45 PM |

I e-mailed Sony already.
hmm I think I'll try out what acougan suggested, although I think the corrupted files are in the flash.. because it happened after the installation of the firmware. sigh |

QUOTE(Ninja @ Jul 2 2008, 04:07 PM) Yeah, nerd. Maybe you can try this method. hmm I removed my hard disk already, but I don't have a replacement hard disk to try it out.Because from my previous experience changing HDD, everytime I install a new HDD, or swap HDD between PS3, it will prompt me a message saying that firmware is corrupted and ask me to put a external device (i.e. thumbdrive) containing firmware update file. And, after selecting Start + Select at the same time (or that's what I think the system prompt me to do), PS3 will reinstall the firmware using update file inside your thumbdrive. there's still hope I guess, as the message that appears now is 'cannot start. the correct hard disk was not found.' need to ask my dad for his spare notebook SATA hard disk when he gets back home tonight then I should be able to try it out for sure. thanks for the tips Ninja, acougan. appreciate it I think I'll just take the spare hard disk my dad has, use it to boot up the PS3 and install the software, and switch back to my old hard disk I doubt the same hard disk will work again without reformatting, I'm sure there's an identification of sorts implanted on it. any guesses? guys, the hard disk method doesn't work, but maybe because I don't have the correct equipment. gonna head over to Sora's house tomorrow to format my hard disk using his PS3 and see how, because he successfully managed to update to 2.40
if that doesn't work I'm gonna perform a low-level format on the drive and see if that does the trick. last resort, ask bernard to claim warranty for me sheesh, NEVER trust Screamyx, especially when it's PMS-ing, to update your system software, especially if it's a major update |

QUOTE(Ninja @ Jul 3 2008, 12:40 AM) Bro, seems like you're not the only one. Apparently, there's few cases reported at us.playstation board: oh wow. I'm the minority eh?http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstatio...scending&page=1 And, got video also. Same symptom like what you describe before: damn! I really hope Sora's PS3 can restore my hard disk back to working condition. unless if the problem is the NAND chip =\ |

QUOTE(Ninja @ Jul 3 2008, 12:46 AM) Yeah, i hope your PS3 can be fixed without sending it to Sony. ah reformatting works. gonna get myself an enclosure tomorrow and try and do it from my PC. I just hope my initial fiddling didn't cause damage to the NAND chip.@ crimz... lol.. we posted the same thread link at the same time.. thanks for the heads-up, Ninja and thanks for the well-wishes, guys! will update you guys tomorrow. pray that mine isn't an anomaly and the hard disk reformatting will work |

guys, I just bought myself a hard disk enclosure, attempting to repair my PS3 now
I tried using a Linux-equipped notebook to reformat last night but can't work. Even with the enclosure, the hard disk isn't detected off the bat, you need to go under admin tools where it appears as a pool of unrecognised data, and format it from there. I wonder how bad the damage to the hard disk is, as if it can't be read off the bat, there's something seriously wrong with it. I'm documenting the process now, and if there are any requests, I'll put up a guide for it as it might come in handy in the future zz useless Sony. ask me bring my machine there go check This post has been edited by nerd: Jul 3 2008, 06:25 PM |

still cannot. I think must wait until Sony re-releases their 2.40 or better still, 2.41. can't roll back to 2.36 because the PS3 doesn't recognize anything below 2.40 already, so I'm assuming the flash chip has already been written with 2.40 data.

none.
it just goes back to the same screen previously.. the one where it asks to reinstall the firmware by pressing Start + Select. I'm in a fix now because the 2.40 download has been taken down, and it won't accept 2.36. if I could download another fresh copy of 2.40 that might help. I would try to go to Sora's house and try out his PS3 but problem is if his PS3 formats my hard disk, his data will be gone when he puts his hard disk back into his machine. I'm in fix until Sony releases a new fix. I doubt my flash memory is corrupted. or is it? |

because the hard disk will require a format even if you transfer it across machines, AFAIK. can anyone clarify this?

QUOTE(vorchiel @ Jul 3 2008, 07:12 PM) AFAIK any OS will not recognise and mount it because PS3 internal HDD uses proprietary filesystem. However the partitions can be seen by diskmgmt.msc tool under start->run in windows machine or gparted in linux. just read that somewhere, and I managed to format the system using admin tools. thanks anyway QUOTE(acougan @ Jul 3 2008, 07:16 PM) i think some of us still have the MD5 96e9def601672c5abcbb4604bb2346f1 2.40 on our thumbdrives yea Sora should have it, I think. but if the file is the same throughout, why should it differ then? hmm weird seriously.yup, the 40Gb model is different, u need the FW ready when you boot with fresh HDD. 60/80GB models can just boot directly. |

I just reconnected my HDD back to my PC and found out something very interesting. the HDD was untouched! means the PS3 didn't write anything to it.
I think I need to try another update file. |

QUOTE(Pepperboy @ Jul 3 2008, 07:28 PM) cannot, as I already formatted it to NTFS beforehand as per the guide I think I can come up with a theory on why the crashes occur - the flash memory was update to 2.40 kernel, but the hard disk remained untouched. hence, the discrepancy caused the PS3 to crash upon start up. this theory is further supported by the fact that even after 'updating' a few times using a freshly-reformatted hard disk, no files were written to it. plus, the PS3 refused to accept any update below 2.40. as for why it crashes PS3s indiscriminately, I'm guessing it's the hard disk brand. Sony has a few suppliers from what I heard. but then again, it could be anything. I'm waiting for a fix that's 100% working to test out. if that doesn't work, something is wrong with the PS3 itself and I'll send it for RMA. This post has been edited by nerd: Jul 3 2008, 08:01 PM |

depends on what model is in question.
the 40GB model will require a reformat with every hard disk swap, whereas the 60GB and 80GB models can swap hard disks without any reformatting. if the 40GB requires part of the OS to be written to the hard disk, that's the bit that's causing the problem. of course, I'm just hypothesizing, and I may be wrong I'm optimistic about the whole thing. hopefully the fix will er, fix it. if it doesn't, there's always RMA. either way, I'm doing a low-level format on the hard disk now.
