its been a year ive post on this forum, and it also almost a year i played this game..though i stop playing it sometime early this year and my fort never seen a third year and never have more than 60 dwarf and never had a goblin invasion...

when i start played it again early this year, there were many changes and new things..like the new mayday tileset..
more revised and detail tutorial..

my first fortress seen it all that i never seen before,
goblin invasion, famine (too many dwarf) and almost reach 4th year..when the goblin horde seen too much for me to handle..and i decide to close the fortress main gate and drop the tunnel to prevent any breakthrough..then the dwarf feel unhappy, lack of food kick in and miasma outbreak coz dwarf to throw a tantrum...ha3..then i just decide to abandon fortress..losing is fun

im reclaiming the fort now..hoping all goes well smile.gif

I played it back recently too, managed to make quite a nice fortress for few years, defend it against gobelins and all...

Then trying to have some fun with the river I did a channel at the wrong place.... flood started >_<
More than 3/4 of my fortress would have gotten flooded and no way to stop the water, had to abandon it...
That was the first time I got sieges too, no idea why I never had before

Started another one, managed to get it quite safe and running too, military in full steel plate, so many traps even the 5-6th gobelins sieges couldnt get half way through it, food independent and even some trees growing underground so I don't really have to go outside for very long time if needed.
Just that after a while there is no much challenge, I played around with some crazy construction again though, that's the most fun thing to do in the later game.

Killing elves caravane with drawbridges/water pond was quite fun too tongue.gif

Having iron ore on the map makes it quite "easy", I usually always start on a map with Magma too. I like having bottomless pit/chasm too, for dumping and coz it makes the map construction more interesting usually.

Think the last version of the game was quite a long time ago though no? not sure got much improvements lately (except Mayday's tileset)

Graphics are laughable
Interface is quite a nightmare to get used to
You will probably loose your first few fortresses to dumb things like monkeys/fish/starvation/flood/moods (yes, fishes can kill your dwarves easily by dragging them in the rivers)
You will hate your dwarves for being so stupid or moody

But there is some really funny parts in it and the mechanisms are very interesting and realistic, like water pressurization is very well done.

Definitely not a game for everyone but if you like complex simulations games in sandbox it's a pretty good one.

They have some tutorials maps and pdf available on the official websites, that helps a LOT to understand the basics of the game, highly recommended.

Looks like a big release with lots of stuff inside, but hard to get a clear list of what was added though, this build seems to be still semi-beta still.

Oh yar, thanks!

Was trying to find it inside the archive of the new version or on the website but couldnt find them.

Holy cow they added lots of stuff, the new medical engine is really complex, as is the new combat/training/military module.
New more complex undeground seems nice too

Quite incredible to see all the details they add all the time.

And they still manage to keep the "fun" 2nd degree of Dwarf Fortress, like:\

"It is now possible to "flay" a creature. Have fun" tongue.gif

Hummmmmm, now I am tempted to give it a spin just to try all of that... too many games... too little time >_<

Yar, I also waiting for MayDay update to test it out, I really find it much easier to read than the normal tileset.

@Deimos: nope, I think I heard that name before but never played it

Edit: looks like MayDay released an updated for the tileset:

Mayday Wiki page

I will give it a spin to test I think.
But the DF version is still beta only so lots of bugs apparently, just want to test the new features a little.

Version 0.31.01 is out.

Get it from here: Dwarf Fotress 0.31.01

I suggest waiting a bit for the bug-fixes

Hmmm, I wonder how much processing power needed for a 200 population sweat.gif

Why so?
The only change I saw that could be related was need irrigation now but did not see change for the plump helmet.
Did I miss something?

Yar, so just need to irrigate it, few buckets and that's about it.

What I personally plan is to have above ground farming for the first few months until i get irrigation done (either through buckets/pond or through channeling/floodgate/river), it still works apparently.
From what I read picking up some bushes then planting above ground still works, just that's a little more dangerous for your dwarfs since it's outside

Apparently also some of the new underground caves already have muddy soil in them, just that depending of what is inside these caves it might be dangerous to go there tongue.gif

I agree it's a bit harder now but I always found it was a bit too easy to produce food for your big fortress.

Like a 5X5 farm plot could feed a huge fortress without much issue, including the booze
