Wanted to create a thread to talk about this game but a quick search lead me to this one, and it deserves to be resurrected.

This game is currently taking up all my time. You guys that still haven't played this game yet need to read this:
http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/
It's a succession game (sometimes also called Bloodline games). Succession games are arranged via forums, where people that signup to play get one in-game year each to manage the fortress. Play the game, post things that are happening, finish your turn, zip the savegame up and post it at the forum for the next guy to continue. This one in particular is from the Something Awful forums, and it tells an epic tale of elephant invasions, lava floods and dwarves not wearing pants. I can only wish the DF fanbase here gets big enough to come up with something awesome like this.

This game is really fun when you can imagine how the fortress you are making looks like and it isn't hard when you know what are the things you are looking at and you understand things like vertical z-levels. For example, I chose my first fortress to be located right where a main river splits into two smaller rivers. Over time, once I got to grips with z-levels, I realized the badassness of the location: the main river is actually falling several vertical levels before splitting into different directions, making the entrance my fortress right on top of a hill overlooking a waterfall. Maybe I'll post pics later. I've also got stories about fisherdwarves getting murdered by carp (yes, ikan kap) but I think I'm gonna save it for when it gets merrier in this thread.

If you've been playing but got confused by the ASCII, get the Dwarf Fortress Graphic version posted by bobo earlier. I'm playing that version. It's the same game, but with graphics. It's easier to differentiate things when they actually look like the stuff they are meant to be and not letters. If you still can't wrap your head around DF after countless tries, post questions here, I'll be happy to answer them if it can get you engrossed in this game as I am.

There's a 40d13 version? I thought the versioning ends at "d", which means the fourth bug fix.

http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Version

The next version will include hospitals.

* New setup for hospital
* Realigning of compound fractures and traction
* Sutures for open wounds
* Use of soap to clean patients
* Surgery to remove rotten tissue
* Dressing wounds with bandages
* Splints
* Crutches
* Plaster casts
* Soldiers able to perform basic first aid
* Separate out feeding of patients as a job
* Medical information and chief physician appointment
* Make dwarves clean themselves up and groom/trim their cosmetic tissue layers

Awesome. A lot of my dwarves have bled to death because of sparring accidents. In the future, they can actually stitch up their wounds.

I also have a Captain of the Fortress Guard who's been comatose for 2 years because of a lower spine injury from sparring. The dwarves keep feeding him. I don't know how that's possible since his status says unconscious and I'm pretty sure they don't have the technology to feed him intravenously like in modern hospitals. Hope the new patch will fix this and he will actually die because right now I can imagine the poor guy as a drooling vegetable and the dwarves have to keep changing his diaper.

You've got to get your food industry running within the first year, otherwise your dwarves will soon be catching rats and lizards to eat. Besides being gross, this will give unhappy thoughts to your dwarves.

It's pretty easy to farm; find sand or clay underground and just lay out a big farm plot (around 7x4 should be enough) then press "q" to adjust the farm settings. You can then choose what to plant (scroll through seeds using "+" and "-") for each season ("abcd" for the 4 seasons). I suggest putting down plump helmets for all 4 seasons, as they can grow without sunlight and can both be eaten and brewed into booze. Don't make strawberry fields underground, as they need sunlight to grow. Also don't forget to enable the farming job on some of the dwarves ("v -> p -> l" to go into specific dwarf's labor settings). Later on you might want to grow pig tails and rope reeds which can be processed at the farmer's workshop into cloth to make bags and clothes.

If you're having problems with cats, just build one wooden cage and assign all the stray cats to the cage. Tough luck if you have some that have already been adopted as pets as they cannot be caged. You can then sell the cat-filled cage to traders. Or you can dump it into the river as a sacrifice to the carps and quench their bloodthirst temporarily. Really.

I've just had my fortress besieged by an army of 40+ goblins. Only lost 4 soldiers and 2 war dogs thanks to trader caravan guards but the goblin lord got away with only one severed arm. I've read that the sieging army only gets bigger after this, so I expect I'll be losing my fortress within a few years. When the hell will the elven caravan bring me exotic animals, I need to train war cougars and war grizzly bears already.

Awesome story I found in the Penny Arcade DF thread concerning the "friends" you were talking about.

Now I want to build a 15 z-level green grass gate to welcome my incomers (and intruders).

Green GRASS? I don't think that's going to last very long against invaders, hehe. At least you can regrow the gate though. How do you make multiple z-level gates anyway? If you are using the 'dig' command to unearth the space for it I don't think it's going to be one huge gate. It will be gates on each level separated by cavern floor, not connected to each other.

80 goblins? I don't think I'm even going to reach that point considering most of my soldiers are wrestlers. I don't have enough coal to forge weapons, shields and armor for them. Lots of metal though. Haven't found magma on my map and there are very little trees left outside my fortress. I'm living off logs from traders now. How far down do you usually found underground magma? I'm already -11 levels down. Not ready to meet "friends" yet, so I'm going to dig horizontally first.

I'm using Mayday and the stones are distinguishable enough between each type for me. My only beef with it is that it doesn't have different graphics for each profession. Fisherdwarves look the same as fishery workers. Growers, threshers, brewers, butchers also all use one "farmer" graphic. I'm viewing the Dystopian Qantas set right now and it sure looks good.

I've always wanted to get into Minecraft but the price has been a barrier of entry for me. Last I checked it was 10 pounds or something, which translates to around RM50. Pretty ridiculous for an alpha version of a browser game. If they changed it to USD I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
