I started yesterday, indeed it's overwhelming at first and I did not have much time to test it out, but seems the possibilities are kinda endless.
Was reading stuff about mechanisms, fun with magma and co and it sounds pretty fun to test out (flooding the whole region in magma anyone? I am still confusing about lots of stuff but there are lots of resources available to learn. Good recommendation, I just wish I had more time to play it |

QUOTE(bobohead1988 @ Jul 10 2009, 03:00 PM) Yar, I like this slogan for it But I am actually quite impressed by the depth they managed to put inside the game, especially in the "physics" aspect. Like they manage water pressurization, the difference between water (spread fast) and magma (spread slowly but burn everything) etc. Can really feel the guys making the game are passionate about it. Special mention for kitten killing for bone gathering |

Yar, on the wiki they also suggest the same about cats, seems they spawn like crazy otherwise (some suggested to do a kitten zerg traps, put a cage full of kittens near your entrance, if ennemies come close, open the cage, kittens will run everywhere and keep the ennemies busy, giving you time)... lots of crazy stuff you can do in the game
I was reading on crazy projects that some people created like Magma cannons, eternal motion machine and co, really lots of depth in the game, usually not a big fan of sandbox game but this one deserves at least a try I think. But well... for now I did not even managed to plant seeds properly so I am still a big noob |

QUOTE(Sirapted @ Jul 10 2009, 06:43 PM) You've got to get your food industry running within the first year, otherwise your dwarves will soon be catching rats and lizards to eat. Besides being gross, this will give unhappy thoughts to your dwarves. Yar I kinda guessed it was because of the wrong soil, the more I read about the game, the more impressed I am about its depth, steep learning curve or complicated interfaces never really put me off, I just hope I had more time right now, work is crazy >_<It's pretty easy to farm; find sand or clay underground and just lay out a big farm plot (around 7x4 should be enough) then press "q" to adjust the farm settings. You can then choose what to plant (scroll through seeds using "+" and "-") for each season ("abcd" for the 4 seasons). I suggest putting down plump helmets for all 4 seasons, as they can grow without sunlight and can both be eaten and brewed into booze. Don't make strawberry fields underground, as they need sunlight to grow. Also don't forget to enable the farming job on some of the dwarves ("v -> p -> l" to go into specific dwarf's labor settings). Later on you might want to grow pig tails and rope reeds which can be processed at the farmer's workshop into cloth to make bags and clothes. If you're having problems with cats, just build one wooden cage and assign all the stray cats to the cage. Tough luck if you have some that have already been adopted as pets as they cannot be caged. You can then sell the cat-filled cage to traders. Or you can dump it into the river as a sacrifice to the carps and quench their bloodthirst temporarily. Really. I've just had my fortress besieged by an army of 40+ goblins. Only lost 4 soldiers and 2 war dogs thanks to trader caravan guards but the goblin lord got away with only one severed arm. I've read that the sieging army only gets bigger after this, so I expect I'll be losing my fortress within a few years. When the hell will the elven caravan bring me exotic animals, I need to train war cougars and war grizzly bears already. I am still looking for some good tutorials around to get a better understanding of the mechanisms, got some dead links and co, the game is really a niche one ^^ |

Yar, I found that tutorial too (the guy was even linked inside the Penny Arcade comic...), very good one, I am half through it and it explains lots of stuff.
Interface is indeed clunky since it's all keyboard and shortcut but I am kinda used to only using keyboard in my work (Unix ftl...) so I am fine. |

Yar, I use Mayday's one too, it came with the tutorial and it seems to be the most common, it's not bad

I finished yesterday the full tutorials on pdf format, very good to give you a good understanding of the basics of the game, including semi-advanced stuff like Magma handling, Nobles management and even some basics of military and defense.
Now I am starting over my new fortress on my own (still checking on the tutorials for some steps I dun remember much), pretty fun so far, digging your first level down to start your fortress and ending straight into a magma cave makes for some moment of "forced relocation" The game can definitely be very addictive once you get into it, the interface is very clunky but you get used to it. Tonight the objective is to make a working Well by routing a river.... I better make sure to keep a safe save.... |

Yar, a combat report or log of some sort would be good, damn confusing the combats once it starts to be with more than few gobos.
"So that one lost its leg here but managed to crawl back until there, lost his pants then died 10 meters down the corridor impaled on a steel spike traps...." Feels like Sherlock Holmes sometimes.... I didnt even knew you could zoom on the map....... >_< Once thing that I have is that actually I am getting too little invasions, I usually just get some few kobolds and co, no sieges or anything, is there anything that I am doing "wrong"? Because my 2 dozens champions mix of marksmans and hammerdwarf are getting bored... I can see a Gobelin civilization on my fortress menu so should means there is some around right? |

Yar, I get so many immigrants it's becoming an issue so wealth is not a problem.
I do get the random gobelin snatchers going for the kids (at least they try... except they usually try to go for the babies of my female military dwarfs which are on the ones permanently on ground floor... which end up very badly for them) with kobolds, monkeys and crap trying to grab some stuff too But nothing more serious than that. Guess I will try with another fortress, game becomes a bit too easy and boring without any military involvement. |

Hum, my last one ran for quite a few years, I reached 170 dwarfs, had two dozens champions in full steel equipement and all. I had the snatchers for many years but nothing bigger came so it was kind of a letdown to prepare lots of traps and stuff for nothing.
If there is nothing special to do to "trigger" sieges I guess I will just start anew on a new zone. |

Hum true, maybe could let them snatch few kids, I got way too many dwafs anyway.
Orc mode looks damn scary though at the start of your fortress Oh well, I guess I will just destroy that one and start a new one, i find the beginnings of the game to be the most interesting. |

Yar, that would be good, but they would need to somehow improve the processing engine somehow, I read that the game lags on low CPU because they are simply so many things going on at the same time.
But an isometric view of the game would make it go from an interesting sandbox game to a possible hit. |

I played it back recently too, managed to make quite a nice fortress for few years, defend it against gobelins and all...
Then trying to have some fun with the river I did a channel at the wrong place.... flood started >_< More than 3/4 of my fortress would have gotten flooded and no way to stop the water, had to abandon it... That was the first time I got sieges too, no idea why I never had before Started another one, managed to get it quite safe and running too, military in full steel plate, so many traps even the 5-6th gobelins sieges couldnt get half way through it, food independent and even some trees growing underground so I don't really have to go outside for very long time if needed. Just that after a while there is no much challenge, I played around with some crazy construction again though, that's the most fun thing to do in the later game. Killing elves caravane with drawbridges/water pond was quite fun too Having iron ore on the map makes it quite "easy", I usually always start on a map with Magma too. I like having bottomless pit/chasm too, for dumping and coz it makes the map construction more interesting usually. Think the last version of the game was quite a long time ago though no? not sure got much improvements lately (except Mayday's tileset) |

QUOTE(temptation1314 @ Feb 10 2010, 11:26 AM) Graphics are laughableInterface is quite a nightmare to get used to You will probably loose your first few fortresses to dumb things like monkeys/fish/starvation/flood/moods (yes, fishes can kill your dwarves easily by dragging them in the rivers) You will hate your dwarves for being so stupid or moody But there is some really funny parts in it and the mechanisms are very interesting and realistic, like water pressurization is very well done. Definitely not a game for everyone but if you like complex simulations games in sandbox it's a pretty good one. They have some tutorials maps and pdf available on the official websites, that helps a LOT to understand the basics of the game, highly recommended. |

Looks like a big release with lots of stuff inside, but hard to get a clear list of what was added though, this build seems to be still semi-beta still.

QUOTE(Sirapted @ Apr 2 2010, 09:42 AM) Oh yar, thanks! Was trying to find it inside the archive of the new version or on the website but couldnt find them. Holy cow they added lots of stuff, the new medical engine is really complex, as is the new combat/training/military module. New more complex undeground seems nice too Quite incredible to see all the details they add all the time. And they still manage to keep the "fun" 2nd degree of Dwarf Fortress, like:\ "It is now possible to "flay" a creature. Have fun" Hummmmmm, now I am tempted to give it a spin just to try all of that... too many games... too little time >_< |

Yar, I also waiting for MayDay update to test it out, I really find it much easier to read than the normal tileset.
@Deimos: nope, I think I heard that name before but never played it Edit: looks like MayDay released an updated for the tileset: Mayday Wiki page I will give it a spin to test I think. But the DF version is still beta only so lots of bugs apparently, just want to test the new features a little. This post has been edited by Gormaz: Apr 2 2010, 03:33 PM |
