I am also a Penang-kia so I know. Actually when you compare hawker food, it is actually more expensive in Penang. You normally have to take two helpings to satisfy as the portion is small. Like Assam Laksa, here are only a few strands of noodle in a bowl. The helpings in KL are bigger and they are more filling. Advantage is in Penang, I can have variety, a small bowl of this and a small bowl of that.

For Koay Teow Th'ng, I normally go to Argyll road. It was actually better when the original was in the old coffee shop before they shifted opposite. Now you have 2 KTT stalls there. I think they have misunderstanding with the coffee shop operator.

im from penang too and not be bias or wat , penang food is still one of the original taste we can get from the hockkien . some of u probably think KL can match Penang but if u check their background most of them are originally from Penang coming to KL . And those who can give challenge to Penang food in KL or PJ are only the hockkiens from SS2, PJ and Klang.

So be clear of the comparison of it. No other canton or hakka folk able to pull the same taste and call it Penang Hockkien mee, Laksa or Penang Char Koay Teow.

Penang food is small ??? I think the right word is not small portion or big portion but Fine .
French and Italian food are so different but yet some of you still thinks its the same.
Italian families if the table is not big enough or have enough food on the table, the mama will be chase out.

YEs although it's small but it kick ass. Asam Laksa once served in a small bowl in Rex Cinema and it tasted so good that time. I can still remember the Prawn paste ...
I dont really like the KL one , although its big and have lots of ingredient, i think its too COMPLICATED.

Added on January 19, 2010, 9:36 pmIf im going home to Penang, two or three food i must attack this time as its hard to find in PJ or KL.

1) Fried Oyster with Egg starch.
2) Char Koay Kak - Carrot cake in KL is different from Penang as it is more dry and hard.
3) Kek Lok Si Laksa - wonder how to get in there now.

any good recommendation for this 3 foods in Penang?
Seafood Char Koay Kak which i knew is the best is in Batu Lanchang MArket and fried oyster dont know

After visiting Bangkok, Penang Oh Chien is nothing! The Oh is too fine already.

Yup that Penang Batu Lancang Market Food Court has many bestest!
Seafood Char Koay Kak
Nyonya Kueh
Chinese Pasembor aka Cheh Hoo in Hokkien
Penang Chee Cheong Fun
Fried Keoy Teow with duck egg
Hua chee & Ham Chim Peng
.......

And at night the Choo Char is cheap and good! (Try fish head wine & kachang botol in sambal with prawns)
Go early on Sat & Sun.

I spend most of my childhood and youth days in Penang. Been to almost most makan stalls in that era. Hokkien Mee in Jelutong Market,Classic Rest.in Komtar, the coffee shop beside the Sony Centre in Perak Road, Koay Teow Th'ng in Argyll Road, roti chanai in Transfer Road and beside Odeon, Sister's Char Koay Teow, Char Koay Teow in Bridge St., Curry Noodle in Jalan Abad, tongue.gif
Ikan bakar in Teluk Tempoyak, Assam Laksa in Air Itam and Balik Pulau, Nasi Kandar in Line Clear or Tamil St.,Chee Cheon fun in New Lane(sin kay),yam rice in Macalister Road etc.etc. tongue.gif
They all are famous Penang fare but if they prepare the same things here in KL they won't work here. Why?because the KL guys will be biased against their favourites in KL. When they take it in Penang they will compliment but if they eat it in KL, that's a different story. KL hawker fare are all muddled up. Try asking Char Koay Teow man in Penang to fry bihun, he will shoo you away. Many years ago they don't even fry mee. Heck! they even have dry (kon low)prawn noodle now.
Here in KL you have people eating prawn noodle with koay teow which is unheard off in Penang. So, it is different here in KL and Penang.Opinions are different.
I say this because after I was laid off, I have been a hawker for the past 6 years and I can see how biased they can be. I have one who wants all 3 types of noodles and yet they complain. There are some regulars(from Penang) that compliments that the taste is authentically Penang and very seldom found here in KL. But these are just the minority. Take Char Koay Teow, Penang's style is lighter in colour but here they insist on darker.

The matter of opinion and taste is personal (it may be biased) and also atmosphere and ambiance must also be taken in consideration. when KL guys are holidaying in Penang, they are in good mood, hungry and also to show that they are connosieurs who knows that 'tempat', even s*** is good to them in Penang. Serve them the same in KL and they will tell you, "aarr! that place, this place is better". doh.gif

This is a personal opinion of mine so sorry to those offended.

Haha... i think u quite right on several counts. Maybe when ppl go holidaying they want to try sth different, and when back in kl they want sth they are used to. So in pg they want to see pg style, back in kl, must be kl style. My fellow northern frens who work here keep complaining how come most of the ckt hre in kl r so dark.

Shows that kl ppl have a very muddled mind kakaka...

I've been in kl half my life, so can b kl-resident liao, but still hanker for pg food. No fight la.

If u r selling pg style ckt here, can share where your stall is if u dun mind. I want light colour one !

Penang is a heaven for food. But i guess u really need a car for ur food journey. Else it will be like us...limited to the town area. But hope on Rapid Penang is a very good option too. They are quite on schedule.

You can check up my journey here : My Penang Food

This koay chap is the only one in sungei petani . They located on the shop lot and not on the road side. this been like 40 years old delicacy there already and not many people know it unless you live in SP before.

it operates in the morning not night.

I think u r confuse with the one in Penang which is in Kimberly Street at night one . That one is with Soy Duck sauce with Lor Egg. That is not.

You were right on . I myself was a penang kia and the Char Hor Fun in Penang is so nice as compare to the one Tai Chou here. Where can i get to eat Char Hor Fun Penang Style in KL?

I never try Nasi Kandar in Tamil St, where is it? I always go back to eat my nasi kandar at line clear and also the nasi briyani in campbell street. The others are so so only.... the best one can also be found in Gelugor food stall where alot of people queue.

The Roti Canai in Transfer road was the best in Malaysia but their quality had gone down over the years . The original one is more crispy with oil when they first started. I also go for the Chee Cheong Chuk in Mac Calister road. Lor Mee the best is inside the Jelutong Market and the one corner road near to Nanyang Art Supplies. The one at the temple is so so only...

Hockkien Mee is in Air Itam Bus Stop opposite the Police Station. The soup is really boiled with prawn head ...

I still don't know where i can get the best Or Chien in Penang yet. Ever wonder where the best Wan Ton Mee in Penang? When i found out this place and recommend to my fren, they found heavenly food. The wan ton mee is so small bowl and u must have two at least. I believe this is the best i ever known. Even the KL one have no match due to their sweetness and the mee is abit soggy type. I still prefer the Penang Curly Wanton mee. The second best one is in Pulau Tikus Police Station , opposite of it. The sambal belacan must go with the Crispy Wan Ton or you miss the fun.

KL people judge the Penang food differently from the other states. Penang people are mostly hockkien and their origin makes them know how it first tasted like. I know some KL people who have not even seen a pineapple plant before, they thought it was hangdown from the tree like banana. Ask them Durian Belanda , they said is it a Durian? So now i know what Assam Laksa taste to them is totally different from Penang Kia. Their Char Hor Fun is so total different to ours from PEnang. There were some of them using PEnang CKT name
to cook up the branding but taste bud is meant for KL folks.

Maybe its one of those days. I try before but i felt okay. I do believe it does occurs due to the crab peeling time. Food exposed too long in the open air are easily infected with bacterias. but the popiah crab meat is very rare to find elsewhere. just prepare the stomache ache pill when u eat there or any other hawker food in Penang. E-Coli bacteria can be found easily especially at hawker food. Eat with cautious especially when you are going for vacation. The sudden change of taste bud is like a different culture shock to some who are not use to rough tide.

I have gave up being a hawker few months ago. Maybe not my 'meang soi' as they say. Western food is actually my line (being a Hainanese, mother side) but I have grown quite well versed in Prawn Noodle, CKT, Fish Ball Noodle, Nasi Lemak, jawa mee and even 'san jian zhuang' of KL.
I have a friend who wants to hire me as their chef for a fast lunch outlet near Trader's Hotal but still pending. To start a hawker stall, you probable need a few thousand if you are just starting but I don't really recommend it. It is highly stressful! No matter hw good your food may be, you still willhave negative inputs anf those few will really let you down even if you try to accomodate them. I like cooking but cannot make money out of it. They say I only have 'tah koong meang soi' but not a boss.
laugh.gif My wife sold off all the hawker equipments checaply to discouraged mee from setting up another stall. laugh.gif
My advise is, if you really want survive, make sure you can last 6 months even if you are losing. I can't maybe that's why I failed. Eg. chicken rice (from my experience)
To generate sales of RM300 to RM400 per day you need averagely RM200 a day. 6 chickens, 2 kg. of char siew pork(they call it 'choong tui yuk'), 3 kg. of pork belly for roast pork, rental, some 'yum cha' expenses, petrol. If your sales is RM250 , you only earn RM20 as RM30 will be given to your worker. If you sell Rm300 plus then thumbup.gif good and if you finish better still rclxm9.gif
As for me, I get an average of RM250 a day and even my in-laws stopped me from giving them free chicken and char siew. doh.gif My last straw came when my car broke down and needs 2K to repair. Threw away the car and took bus for a few days and gave up since then.
Anyone wants to learn, can PM me,for a little 'ang pow' I am willing to teach. whistling.gif

Added on January 24, 2010, 5:22 pmI never try Nasi Kandar in Tamil St, where is it? I always go back to eat my nasi kandar at line clear and also the nasi briyani in campbell street. The others are so so only.... the best one can also be found in Gelugor food stall where alot of people queue.

Tamil St. is beside Chowrasta market. Looking from IPD police station ( si hoong lou as they called it in Pg) it is on the right side. They say the original nasi kandar is from here. I also like 'Kassim Mustaffa' in Bayan Baru. thumbup.gif

Added on January 24, 2010, 5:31 pmWhile discussing about Penangkia in KL, there used to be mixed rice shop in Jln Cantonment, Pulau Tikus (opposite the post office and toddy shop) called 'Sa Chew'. Fantastic nyonya cooking like devil curry, pork patties, kangkung belacan, fantastic assam fish etc. Are they still there? His son started one in Bangsar also called 'Sa Chew'.
Anybody knows about this place? Both of them.

That is not.

if morning, and at shop lot, i can only think of 1, which the koay chap is really very normal nia imo

is the shop lot very big and sell a lot of stuff? when is the last time you eat it? did they move liao?

btw, i dint confuse with penang one, and i stay in SP for almost 20 years already

My advise is, if you really want survive, make sure you can last 6 months even if you are losing. I can't maybe that's why I failed.
off topic for every single business you do, not only hawker, you need to prepare your cash flow for 6 month at least, thats the minimum requirement.

almost all business, 99% of the time, you won't have profit in the first 6months, let alone covering your fixed expenses.

and yes of coz some business you can profit earlier, but preparing and know what will happened earlier is better than face it unexpectedly
