You can take a taxi to the Intl' Airport in Bayan Lepas to rent the car. I tried renting cars in Penang though, no credit card no rental. Most rental at the airport is expensive as they are the real deal! icon_rolleyes.gif

PS/ Since you are already a group of you, why don't you rent the car in KL and drive up. Cheaper to rent cars in KL. Check Mudah.com for 'kereta sewa pandu sendiri'. icon_idea.gif

BERJAYA HOTEL, PENANG

The worst hotel EVER! It's worst than a budget motel, I wouldn't return even if they pay me!

DO NOT! I REPEAT! DO NOT VISIT THIS HOTEL! We went there for 1 night stay in Berjaya Hotel Penang, booked online a couple of weeks early due to public holiday (peak period) so that we won't have headaches of finding a nice hotel, it seems like Berjaya is a good choice from what we saw in their website. The truth is, EVERYTHING is a BIG FAT LIE! They gave us a room that has a damaged electronic lock. We would have noticed it before we enter the room but because it was already opened (supposedly by housekeeping) when we checked in, we didn't find out until we went out for clubbing and returned at 4am. We were forced to go back and forth between the reception so that the staff can re-encode the electronic key card for us, for 4 times! it took us about half an hour for this, but still the lock won't open, because I suspect the electronic locking mechanism was already jammed. Usually this can be fixed within minutes because all electronic locks can be opened by a physical (real) master key, but NO....the reception didn't even call maintenance to help, and after the 4th visit to the counter to ask for help, at last they decided to call maintenance. When the maintenance guy arrived (after an hour), he DID NOT bring the key! We were forced to change room. They helped us change to a room that is worst than one of the cheapest budget motel that I have visited. The air-cond won't work, the walls are all dirty and black (it's NOT the painting or wallpaper's color), the toilet was.........unimaginable, the sink was cracked, the cover to the bowl was not there, the TV.......well, it's junk from my grandfather's era, we paid RM208 for a room, but this room I wouldn't even sleep in it if it were free, hell I wouldn't even think of visiting even if they PAY ME to do it. It's like I paid for a Benz, but Mercedes gave me a Proton Saga and tell me it doesn't have any petrol in it! They eventually change ANOTHER 2 rooms for us, but it's the SAME story FOR BOTH, except this one has air-cond. That night all of us couldn't change our clothes because all our luggage was locked inside our original room, imagine how you'd feel if you are one of us! The other morning when I woke up, I called the reception and asked for an update of our original room's status, they replied it HASN'T BEEN OPENED yet, it was already 11.30am! At around noon, at last they successfully unlocked the door and we have access to our luggage, but we found out they did not provide us with any towels, even toothpaste was not provided!

The other day when we checked out we asked for a refund, but NO! they told us the room has already been charged via credit card online, they already provided us with "2 rooms instead of 1 that we original booked" and we MUST PAY! The "Manager" apologized and said he'll compensate us with a "free lunch"........for 3 of us. FYI, our group has 7 people, 4 of us slept in some crappy rooms, he gives us "free lunch" for only 3 of us and what about the other 4? Are they suppose to WATCH us eat? He also gave us an alternative to have "some sandwiches and coffee" at the lounge for all of us. We went to Penang because the local food is famous, and the "Manager" offered us SANDWICH? in a hotel? When we left, we didn't get any kind of compensation, because that "5 star or whatever star BUDGET hotel (motel)" Berjaya Hotel, Penang, did not make ANY effort to compensate us. We left with a broken wallet, a pissed off head, a broken heart and a waste of time. Below are some of the photos I've taken, this will prove that I am NOT lying.

Im planning to drive to penang for a 2 days 1 nite trip with my gf early next month during my birthday. Is my first trip alone with my gf and thinking to stay a slightly better hotel than usual budget hotel (usually with friends tongue.gif Budget budget!)

My gf suggested area around Batu feringgi... So immediately I can think of HardRock Hotel... Checking its website.. d price can range from 400-600 for a deluxe room (with seaview).. my budget is around 300-400+- a night. is there any other nice hotel to suggest? Something more modern contemporary ... instead of old school kinda design. It can be a 3star service boutique hotel as long as is interesting!

wub.gif I too have bad experience with Berjaya Hotel, Penang. I had booked through phone and mentioned very clearly that I am coming with wife and a kid below 12. At that time I was residing in Langkawi and I like to shop in Midlands as it was newly opened. I like to hunt for computer items there too. I asked for the best price and they recommended a deal and I said again it is for 2 adults and a kid below 12. When we checked in, we were given a room which was just as big as the queen bed itself. Hardly any space for an extra bed. The front office refused to change me to another room and gave me an angry look and I decided to get my refund and change to another hotel. That was the last I ever stayed in any Berjaya Hotels. sad.gif

I stayed in Berjaya Hotel in my 2nd visit to Penang less than a year ago with my mom and cousin. Book for 2 rooms via booking.com. Fortunately I have quite a pleasant experience except I felt the elevator is kinda slow, and I wait forever for it. The staff is quite nice and the room is not bad though. Didn't get any trouble on my 2 nights stay. Even I'm thinking to back there on my 3rd visit, but due to it price, I stay in Aurora Court serviced apartment last week.
Sorry to hear you guys have bad experience with it.

Why not? laugh.gif So, can anyone answer my question? Checked with Agoda and it's around RM 405 for 2 nights at G Hotel and RM 285 for nights at Northam.

That's cheap for G Hotel! Normally, at that rate, it's for 1 night only.

I stayed there in my first visit to Penang over 1 year ago with my girls.
The room is damn small, furniture is almost broken, Toilet lock is not working, and the worst thing is
they have the rudest front desk staff I ever met. She just ignore me and talk like "you have no money so i dont want to be nice with u"
Fortunately the travel desk staff is a nice guy.
Nevertheless, the breakfast menu also sucks, cold and not so good.

Anyway Im not agree with u, they are 3 star hotel and I believe their overall service and facility is just enough for 3 star. Definitely not 5 star hotel.

Hi.

I intend to hire a car and go around the Penang island, something like starting off from George Town, go north-west toward Batu Ferringgi to Kpg Tenggah to Butterfly park/Teluk Bahang Dam to Kpg Genting Dalam to Kpg Sunai Batu etc. Basically around the island itself. I seek advise as to:

1. Any comment on this plan?
2. What are the thing to do/see/avoid etc along the route?
3. Any good eateries along the way? Name & preferably with GPS coordinates?

Anything.

Time permitting, may be even Bukit Mertajam.

Thanks
