Hi.

I intend to hire a car and go around the Penang island, something like starting off from George Town, go north-west toward Batu Ferringgi to Kpg Tenggah to Butterfly park/Teluk Bahang Dam to Kpg Genting Dalam to Kpg Sunai Batu etc. Basically around the island itself. I seek advise as to:

1. Any comment on this plan?
2. What are the thing to do/see/avoid etc along the route?
3. Any good eateries along the way? Name & preferably with GPS coordinates?

Anything.

Time permitting, may be even Bukit Mertajam.

Thanks

2) Hawker food and centre - No matter where you go. They are everywhere. I don't where you want Hokkien Mee, Wan Tan Mee, Char Koay Teow, Chendul, Ais Kacang, or anything else, you can find it easily. My recommendation for now is the hawker centre opposite Penang Chinese Girl School (PCGHS) and the seafood porridge shop on the way to the airport.

Contrary to common belief, the hawher food near Gurney Drive is not as good as you think and almost ridiculously expensive.
I have been trying to find this PCGHS hawker center on google map but couldn't find it. Anyone got the GPS coordinate? Thanks

I think it is in Gottlieb Road beside the New Bob Center. Find Maxis Center and you can find it. The pavement in Gottleb Road used to be a hawker center. I loved the 'lok lok' there but it has since shifted to Pulau Tikus Market. Now I hear there's a food court there liao.  laugh.gif

Hard to find lah. I tried.

Please go to this website, click on the place and a little marker will be placed at the place you just clicked. Click again and the coordinate will pop out.

Optiplex330 - you not using malfreemaps?

Thanks.

I only have Nokia Maps GPS, no malfreemaps.

As for the coordinate you gave me, I only know 2 format (Decimal and Deg/Min/Sec) and not yours. Can you please give me in the other 2 format, preferably Decimal? Thanks.

bro, this is the universal GPS Coordinates!
You copy & paste it into Google map and straight away it takes you to the Goodall cafe!
Have a try, ya?
*
Ha, it works. Thanks

I was looking high and low for PCGHS hawker center and thought it must be a pretty big place. Didn't realize it's just a shop.
So what's good to eat at this cafe?

N O T H I N G!

In the evening the Pulau Tikus Market as suggested by etigge, offers better CKT, Lok Lok and Chinese Pork satay.

Thanks a lot. You just save me a futile trip.

I intend to rent a car and then drive around the island. From George Town to Batu Ferringgi to Teluk Bahang to eventually see the Butterfly Park and the Dam (anything to see here?). Any nice place to eat along this route?

From Teluk Bahang, I intend to go south and circle the island and eventually reach Matu Baung (see Fish World). But I couldn't find any info on Internet as to what is there to see nor to eat. Can you give me some recommendation? Thanks.

Next few days. Eat anything except the table. No kids. Food at top of priority and sightseeing is just sideshow to allow stomach get hungry enough to eat again. Do I sounded like a pig? LOL

But be prepared to take your turn in a long long line. laugh.gif  I backed out twice and so far have ate only once there. I got an aunt who stays at the flats there. I personally likes Kassim Mustaffa Nasi Kandar in Bayan Baru or the 1 star Hotel Merlin.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Hotel Merlin (5.41962N,100.34173E) may be 1 star but the Nasi Kandar is 5 stars price. They charged me RM21+ but does taste good.

Looking for comment on An-Nur AnCasa Express in Penang. Price seems very reasonable but how is it? Does it have secured free parking? Does it have lift for the elderly?

Or is there any such multi-roomed apartment with free secure parking and lift in Penang you people would recommend?

Thanks

I'd recommend you to try:
Hameediyah Murtabak Kambing
Thai Food at Tree Monkey during sunset (very beautiful sunset there)
Nasi Kandar at Kasim Mustafa (in the middle of town..along Chulia Street Maybe? cant rmbr). Try their Kurma Kambing!
Nasi Melayu at McAllister Road for lunch. Variety of dish to choose from.

and scratch Line clear of your iteninerary!! hehe that's just my recommendation.

It would be of great help if you give GPS coordinates for those recommended place. Otherwise, it's very difficult for out-of-town folks to find the place.

At the entrance of E & O Hotel is the Bayview Hotel building. On either side of the building there are road one of them is Upper Penang Road and the other the road fronting Bayview Hotel. Walk to the end of the road is Farquhar St. Cross the road and there's Continental Hotel and in front of it, there's a Nasi Kandar stall which is not bad. Walk further along, you will see Trader's Hotel, Cititel Hotel, TownhouseHotel. Just after Townhouse you will see Sri Bahari Road and at the junction there's a coffee shop. There are some nice Penang food sold there by the hawkers. Further on you will see the Chulia St. junction and Line Clear Nasi Kandar is near that junction. A famous roti canai is alo on the opposite road but not necessary up to KL folks taste though.

There are also many good food along Chulia St. but at the side road, Cintra St. there's a famous 'Pork Noodle' stall. If you go straight without turning into Chulia St. you will see the Police HQ and just beside it is Wing Look Restaurant. A third generation Hainanese restaurant and in front ot it is the famous Penang cendol. Be adventurous, there are many hawker food around the area.

That's very comprehensive write up. IMHO, anybody who are interested in venturing out on their own should learn to use GPS. It's so much easier for everybody. Instead of so many words, just give them the GPS coordinates and the traveler's GPS unit will lead them there with turn-by-turn voice instruction. My 2 sen.

Mind I ask is this area within walking distance ?
How's the taxi in George Town, using meter ?

AFAIK, Penang's Taxi don't roam the street unlike KL's. So even if you can get a taxi there, getting another taxi to go back may be a problem. So I just get a rental car and use GPS navigation.
