Warner Bros. Confirms Superman Reboot

Just a few days after this article was posted, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov has told The Wall Street Journal that the studio is going to be reintroducing Superman. We assume this will be similar to how Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk was a reboot of Ang Lee's Hulk. Here is what the article says:

Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes -- known as "Batman vs. Superman" -- after the $215 million "Superman Returns," which had disappointing box-office returns, didn't please executives. "'Superman' didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to," says Mr. Robinov. "It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned." "Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009," he adds. "But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."

The article also talks about Warner Bros. adapting other DC properties over the new few years. "By 2011, Mr. Robinov plans for DC Comics to supply the material for up to two of the six to eight tent-pole films he hopes Warner Bros. will have in the pipeline by then," it says. Those projects will likely be about single characters at first, and will be darker much like The Dark Knight:

With "Batman vs. Superman" and "Justice League" stalled, Warner Bros. has quietly adopted Marvel's model of releasing a single film for each character, and then using those movies and their sequels to build up to a multicharacter film. "Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own," Mr. Robinov says.

Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.

Still, the ruling threatened to complicate Warner's plans to make more films featuring Superman, including another sequel and a planned movie based on the DC Comics' "Justice League of America," in which he joins Batman, Wonder Woman and other superheroes to battle evildoers.

Hayden Christensen Is Superman In Justice League Movie



As you may have heard, the production has moved from Australia, where it was originally set to shoot, to Canada. Now reports from up north have started to trickle in. A young lady sent an email to CB stating that she ran into Adam Brody (who is playing The Flash in the movie) at a local bar. She asked him to autograph her napkin and asked what he was doing there:

"They're in BC [Vancouver, British Columbia] to check out locations for their new superhero movie 'Justice League is Mortal'. Brody pointed at Miller and said 'George is our director'. He said he's playing The Flash, Common is playing Green Arrow (or Lantern, one or the other), Armie Hammer (sounded like Arm and Hammer) is Batman, someone from 'Mad Max' is Martian Manhhunter (didn't catch the name) and Hayden Christensen is Superman. Brody also nodded to the woman to his right and said 'she (he said her name but I didn't catch it) is in it too."

Justice League to Start Filming Next Year?

In an article at the Herald Sun in which director George Miller praises Megan Gale's screen test for Wonder Woman in the Justice League live-action movie, the following bit was dropped as well:

Initially slated to be filmed Down Under, Miller conceded production had been moved offshore, with a plan to resume filming next year.

We'll have to wait and see if Warner Bros. Pictures confirms the above at some point down the line.

Variety talked to Warner Bros. Pictures President and Chief Operating Officer Alan Horn, Production President Jeff Robinov and Gregory Noveck, Senior VP of Creative Affairs for DC Comics about the challenges of turning more DC properties into movies besides just the "Batman" and "Superman" franchises. Justice League Had A Batman Too



Mortal was actually on the road to being made? Well director George Miller had the cheek to hire an actor to play Batman, who wasn’t Christian Bale. (This was before The Dark Knight was released and dominated the world, so I will let him off slightly). The actor goes by the name of Armie Hammer, and E! Online spoke to him about the (now deceased) movie.



After the success of The Dark Knight I don’t think I could accept anyone else playing Bruce Wayne within the next decade. Thankfully, the Justice League movie won’t be happening anytime soon so we don’t have anything to worry about.

Even though right now, Warner Bros' planned Justice League Mortal still seems to be shelved or at least backburnered for an indefinite amount of time, E! Online had a chance to talk with Armie Hammer on the set of the CW's "Reaper" about what he went through as George Miller's choice to play Bruce Wayne and the Caped Crusader in the planned superhero ensemble movie.

The great grand-son of oil tycoon Armand Hammer told E! that while he doesn't want to start a battle of the Batmans with Christian Bale ("That guy's got his s--t down"), but he did claim that his "codpiece is bigger." (You don't have to read comic books to know them's fighting words, Armie!)

Hammer still hopes the movie will get made, and he told E! that he and his castmates went through several months of intense physical training before production stopped:

"I would spend hours training with actual guns to prepare me for this stuff," Hammer said. "It was very intense. Our workout regimens were so rigorous that most of us would vomit."

He added, "We weren't trying to get ourselves aesthetically good looking. We were trying to get ready for the demands of shooting."

Every bit of news that came out from the pre-production of this movie was bad, from the stupid castings, the hiring od George Miller as director, the plot of the movie, to even the financing and location. This was a disaster movie waiting to happen.

And dont forget about that stupid movie title Justice League Mortal. WB/DC struck oil with current Batman franchise, you put Batman aside and what else WB/DC has?.....Exactly.

Dark Horizons is reporting that director George Miller (HAPPY FEET) is off of the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. According to them, he revealed the news on an Australian talk-show, commenting that if the project does get going again it will be recast, as "the studios seem to want bigger stars in their superhero movies now." Miller also admitted that he wrote another MAD MAX script, which Mel Gibson turned down. Still, he hasn't given up on that one quite yet.

Well it's not often that I can report on what is ostensibly good news for the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. I say 'ostensibly' because look, I've been reporting on this film for a while and let's face it, with Nolan doing his thing there is no light at the end of this tunnel. Until a respected filmmaker signs on, know that somewhere some studio exec is probably thinking it's about time Uwe Boll got a chance with some real quality subject material.

Nolan does Superman... and Justice League?



There's been a flurry of (rumored) activity with Warner Bros. trying to stuff their stable of famous DC Comics characters into the development pipe.

There was a report of David Goyer overseeing the new scripts for SUPERMAN and BATMAN along with Jonah Nolan, while his bro Christopher Nolan "godfathers" the project(s). IESB claims Chris is maneuvering to get Jonah into the director chair for the MAN OF STEEL, making his feature debut on a big-budget movie starring perhaps the most recognizable superhero in the world.

Wait -- why would the studio be willing to do such a thing? Well... the story is that not only is Chris Nolan preparing the (potential) third BATMAN, but he's also reportedly getting things lined up to gather the costumed icons for a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.

While seemingly far-fetched on the surface, keep in mind that Nolan was behind one of history's biggest moneymakers. But does he really have that much clout? And is that necessarily a good thing, turning the DC Universe into a Nolanverse of brooding superheroes? Or will it simply sputter like past attempts to collect DC's brave and bold on the big screen?

Stay tuned, true believers! Or whatever DC's catchphrase is!

In February 2007, Warner Bros. hired Kieran and Michele Mulroney to write a script for Justice League,[1] which they handed in that June to positive feedback from the studio.[2] George Miller signed to direct in September 2007, while the studio hoped filming would start before the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike. In addition, the studio was considering filming Justice League completely in motion capture, similar to Beowulf.[3] Barrie M. Osborne was to produce,[4] with a $220 million budget.[5]

Filming was supposed to start in February 2008,[6] in Australia, where post-production would also be conducted.[7] Some shooting was to take place at Sydney Heads, while local colleges were scouted.[4] Yet in January 2008, Warner Bros. announced the film was on indefinite hold, allowing an options lapse for the cast. The studio felt the script needed perfecting, which was impossible because of the writer's strike.[8] As soon as the strike ended, Warners wanted to start filming in mid-April 2008.[9] In February 2008 it was announced that production would go to Canada, despite Miller's wishes to keep production at Fox Studios Australia.[5] The Mulroneys are currently rewriting the script.[9]

Marit Allen was originally hired as costume designer, but she died in November 2007.[10] Weta Workshop took over costume design, a decision which opens the possibility of their sister company, Weta Digital, doing the visual effects.[11]

While a cast for the film was never officially declared, various news brokers were able to confirm a number of Miller's casting choices, for which he chose predominantly younger actors who he had hoped would "grow into their roles" over the course of a film trilogy.[12] The decision to cast lesser-known actors has received negative feedback from comic book fans on the internet.[9] Brody, Common, Gale, and Hammer will have to physically train for their roles.[13] In October 2007, roughly 40 actors and actresses auditioned for the League, among them Joseph Cross, Michael Angarano, Max Thieriot, Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki, and Scott Porter.[12]

Concerning the eponymous Justice League, Adam Brody had been cast as Barry Allen / The Flash,[14] - with D. J. Cotrona as Superman,[9] rapper Common as John Stewart / Green Lantern,[15] Australian supermodel Megan Gale as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman,[14] and Armie Hammer cast as Batman.[9] A number of different actors were fleetingly associated with the project; Jessica Biel had turned down the role of Wonder Woman,[16] while Mary Elizabeth Winstead auditioned. Teresa Palmer and Shannyn Sossamon were also interested, while Christina Milian, a comic book fan, offered her services for the role.[17][18] Columbus Short turned down the role of Green Lantern, which rapper T.I. was also rumored for.[19]

From February 2007 until April 2008, the much maligned project was subject to rumors before eventually being put on an indefinite hiatus; in a recent interview, producer Joel Silver stated that Justice League "has been tabled."[20] In August 2008 director George Miller was quoted saying "the flick's production, initially planned for Oz, has been moved offshore, with a plan to resume filming next year."[21]

However, on August 22, The Wall Street Journal reported that Warner's new plan is to release four individual solo movies within the next three years before doing a multiple character movie, much like rival Marvel is reportedly doing with their Avengers film. While Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov confirmed that one of those films will be a Superman reboot, it is likely that among the other three, there will be a sequel to the successful Batman movie The Dark Knight as well as two movies introducing fresh DC Comics characters to the big screen.[22] It has since been confirmed that one of the other two movies will be about Green Lantern.[citation needed]

In December 2008, there were rumors that director Miller was off the project. They were dispelled by a representative of the filmmaker, however, describing the movie's status as "being seriously worked on."[23]

IESB reports that Christopher Nolan is quickly becoming the DC and Warner Bros. go-to guy for looking out for their major A-list titles, as The Dark Knight director may soon find himself in the director's chair for a JLA movie, after he finishes work on Batman 3.[24]

At the Wonder Con, they hinted that 2011 will have Green Lantern, 2012 will have a third Batman and Superman reboot titled The Man of Steel. 2013 a Flash movie titled "The Flash" and possibly a Wonder Woman movie all leading to a Justice League movie set in the same universe much like Marvel Studios' Universe. It would potentially feature Christian Bale and Ryan Reynolds reprising their roles as Batman and Hal Jordan, respectively.

Later that year IESB reported that DC will build their characters in their own worlds, slowly but surely intertwining them with each new film likely starting with the upcoming Green Lantern until a Justice League film. They also said Batman would naturally be the first superhero to appear, and the early continuity is looking like this: Batman Begins is being specifically referred to as "Action Comics #1." Translation: Nolan's Batman is the first (and only) superhero around. and The Dark Knight is being referred as "Action Comics #2." Green lantern would be "Action Comics #3" followed by Batman 3, The Man of Steel, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and then a Justice League movie.

This contradicts statements from Nolan himself who wishes to keep the Superman and Batman universes individual, "Marvel are doing what they are doing and people will either respond to that really well or they won't. Its not something I ever applied a blanket rule to, but Marvel characters are very different to DC characters....You've got to go back to that element of 'What do I see when I close my eyes and think of Batman/Superman?' And for me a big part of that is their individuality. They are extraordinary beings in an ordinary world....they are two very different characters but theres an elemental feeling of power in the iconography of those characters. To me thats originally because they stood alone, I need to hang onto that in my imagining of them". [25] [26]

What’s up with that Justice League Movie? Don’t Hold Your Breath, Kiddies…

Or at least, if you listen to what DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson (left) just told the boys and girls over at IGN. In short, DC has no plans to follow the Marvel method of interconnecting their superhero movies into one universe, and seems to be very satisfied with simply having multiple, non-connected franchises like Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and possibly The Flash if the Scarlet Speedster ever manages to get made.

Here’s what Nelson said in regards to what Marvel’s doing with “The Avengers”, and by default, what DC is (or isn’t) doing with their since-canceled “Justice League of America” movie:



No real parsing there, she comes right out and says that DC has no plans to connect their franchises ala Marvel.

You have to wonder, though, how much she’ll change her tune if (or is that when?) Marvel’s “Avengers” destroys the box office in 2012. Maybe then we’ll see movement on a “Justice League of America” movie…

Geoff Johns Confirms DC's Lack Of Plans For A Justice League Movie!

He also offers some updates on when we'll see the trailer for Green Lantern, whether he'll write any episodes for the animated series based on that character and promises that Superman will punch someone in the upcoming reboot...

At "The Spotlight on Geoff Johns" panel which is currently taking place at the New York Comic Con, Comic Book Resources are providing a live update of what the critically acclaimed comic book writer has to say including his thoughts on the upcoming movies from DC and Warner Bros! Here are a few excerpts from their report where the writer talks a little more about his involvement in projects like the Green Lantern animated series and live action movie as well as the chances of the JLA making their way to the big screen.

On The Green Lantern Movie:

Johns then ran through the "Green Lantern" movie teaser posters and said, "If you love the 'Green Lantern' comics now, you're really going to love them next year." He added that the trailer will debut with the new Harry Potter movie.

On The Plans For A Justice League Movie:

Asked about the possibility of shared-universe films á la Marvel, Johns said, "I'm going to speak frankly: I think our characters are bigger than Marvel's." He said that he'd rather spend time building each character on his or her own rather than "smashing them together."

On Green Lantern: The Animated Series:

Asked whether he would write episodes of the "Green Lantern" animated series, Johns said, "Right now, no, because I need to sleep."

On The Flash Movie:

Asked about a "Flash" movie, Johns stuttered as if there was much he couldn't say, before concluding, "That would be cool."

On The Upcoming Superman Reboot:

On the topic of the next Superman movie, "I don't think you can hope for much more than Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder," Johns said. "He'll be punching something."

I think it's fair to say that the chances of a JLA movie are now looking more and more grim. With the recent news that the company plan on focusing on "standalone experiences" and now Geoff Johns (who is heavily involved in both Green Lantern and Flash as well as several other live action projects) saying the same thing, we might have a long time to wait until we see our favourite DC heroes together on the big screen. Thank God for Marvel, eh?

With the Batman trilogy winding down and Superman returning to theaters next summer, plans to put more of DC Comics' superheroes on the bigscreen are coming together nearly three years after Warner Bros. took back control of characters.

This week, the studio revealed it tapped "Gangster Squad" scribe Will Beall to revive "Justice League," which WB unplugged in 2008, and hired Michael Goldenberg (one of the many writers of "Green Lantern") to pen "Wonder Woman."

Those projects now join in development films based on the Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Lobo, the Suicide Squad and Shazam. DC and WB are also facing a decision on how to reboot Batman once "The Dark Knight Rises" completes Christopher Nolan's take on the caped crusader, featuring Christian Bale in the cowl.

Studio is figuring out whether to bring back Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern in a sequel to last year's actioner or relaunch the character in a completely new way. Goldenberg ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") was brought on board in 2010 to write the screenplay for the sequel, a year before the first film bowed.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt As Batman? 'Dark Knight Rises' Star Could Appear In 'Justice League'



Just because Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy ended with "The Dark Knight Rises" doesn't mean that it actually ended. According to HitFix's Drew McWeeny, Warner Bros. is toying with the idea of casting "Dark Knight Rises" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Batman in the studio's upcoming "Justice League" and could unveil the casting as soon as next summer, when "Man of Steel" arrives in theaters.

Wonder Woman = Jennifer Lawrence...    I can't see anyone else playing this role.

So back in October, Ben Fritz over at the L.A. Times reported that Warner Bros is running full steam ahead with getting a Justice League movie on the big screen by summer 2015.

As of this morning, the search is still ongoing for a director and subject to how Man Of Steel performs, shooting should get underway next year. Now in case you been living under a rock the past year, everybody else knows that Marvel is dropping the sequel to The Avengers that summer as well. That is some pretty stiff competition.

In this corner we got Earth’s Mightiest Heroes going up against Thanos the Mad Titan. How will Warners respond? Just WHO will the Justice League face off against?

Yes folks, Darkseid. The supreme monarch of the planet Apokolips and the greatest threat to the DC Universe.

It’s kind of obvious if you really think about it. I mean for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and others to come together in a summer tentpole movie to face a threat, well, that threat better be planetary. Who were you expecting? Lex Luthor?

Now I’m not going to go into the whole Darkseid wiki backstory because there are other writers out there who can give you way better context on the super villain than I could. Quite frankly, the only experience I have with Darkseid is when Michael Ironside voiced him on Superman: The Animated Series. Remember when Darkseid killed Ben Turpin with his Omega Beams?

Anyway, there you have it folks. Bank on Darkseid raising all sorts of hell for the Justice League. Now as long as Darkseid doesn’t bring the members his corny entourage like Granny Goodness, then we are all good.

Has the Roster for the Justice League Movie Been Revealed?



As we get closer to actual news about the upcoming Justice League film, be prepared for lots of rumors to circulate. Recently, two stories began to make the rounds that both the villain and the plot for the film had been revealed, but those haven't been confirmed by Warner Bros. Now, alleged details on the characters and team for the film have surfaced (via Cosmic Book News).

• Superman is essentially the same character from Man of Steel, and Zack Snyder is consulting regarding the writing of the character.
• Batman: The strategist of the group. Batman doesn't really want to be involved with these super powered beings he considers too powerful. Easily the most complex written.
• Wonder Woman: She has only been in man's world a few short months. The Wonder Woman script Michael Goldenberg is developing will be set before the Justice League movie.
• Green Lantern: Will be Ryan Reynold's character from the Green Lantern movie, but will be freshly written with a more serious tone.
• Flash: The most popular hero in civilian eyes who loves media attention, but when called upon is very serious.
• Martian Manhunter: Alien who has lived on Earth in secret for over a hundred years who has knowledge of Darkseid and his reign.
• Aquaman: Will be the King of Atlantis who has a key role in the film.
• There will also be a heavy military presence in the film which in future rewrites could include characters featured in Man of Steel or even Amanda Waller (Angela Bassett) of which neither are included in the first draft.
• Alfred Pennyworth is in the film in a minor appearance.
• Lois Lane is also in the film in a cameo.
• Darkseid's Elite will be featured who go up against the Justice League early on in the film.

Most of these are already a given for the individual characters and this is the first that we're hearing of Aquaman and Martian Manhunter appearing in the film. Treat these strictly as a rumor for now as we may not know the cast of the film for quite some time.

No director is currently attached to the film, but Will Beall (Gangster Squad) is writing the script.
