Would like to ask sifu here... if I get a iMac with 1GB RAM... If I want to upgrade the RAM to 4GB, can I get the RAM from normal PC store?
Are those special RAM different from the PC ones???

Labbish i guess.
Though i am not using a iMac, using a Macbook, my RM100+ ram from Lowyat shop is working perfectly AFTER my first boot FREEZE.

Yeah the first time i start my Macbook after upgrading, some freezing occurs, after that, it works like charm.

Well, getting RAM from Apple store = big profit for them.

I PM lilredridinghood the store name.
I'm not sure izit appropriate to mention name openly. blush.gif

Well, I asked them if upgrade from 1GB to 4GB how much. The guy told me is RM699 per 2GB, so I need to pay RM1398 for 4GB.
So I asked what happen to the 1GB which come with the original price package??? He said that 1GB will not be included if I take 4GB with RM1398, and I will not get any rebate from the original 1GB... is that true also???

This is why I think of get 1GB first... then go somewhere to get 4GB RAM later if I need to.

Any advice??? blush.gif

I just got his PM, but it isn't entirely nice for me to state out here without his permission. And as I thought, it's the store that I thought.

And dude, it doesn't matter if you do state out the store's name

PLEASE tell me the name of the person.
Really sorry. That is wrong information from our side.

Unless they told you that normal RAM from PC store and the RAM used with Apple computers are different, then that's okay. But KTA RAM can be found at outside PC stores as well. Just make sure if you upgrade, you get KTA RAM.

Noooope.

The only difference is APPLE CERTIFIED RAM are CERTIFIED by APPLE that it'll work flawlessly in their MAC.
You can google around for models/serials/version of RAMs that are "certified" by MAC user and buy them off any PC shop and install it.

Way cheaper.

no it won't void. Same goes to HDD. DIY ram and hdd won't void warranty.

i actually been doing extensive research on this RAM thingy and no forum has been able to give a straight cut explanation on the RAM issued

I have compared the RAMs from many providers and the ones Apple provides. Everything is exactly the same up the the 5-5-5 timing cycle. Even the so called Apple RAM from Mushkin also has exactly the same specs down to the most nitty gritty level. I have done Memory benchmarking using both type of RAM in both Apple iMacs and other Notebooks and all return the same benchmarks. KVR and KTA also same result. So at the end I also give up. I don't know what is the the real deal. I have been happily swapping my RAMs from my non-Mac notebook to my iMac.

I work at Machines as well, doing sales.
But I am the one who actively checks the feedback as well as the info@machines.com.my.

And by the way, there is a rebate on RAM that you purchase here, but on the older 1GB RAM, I will check for you.
However, I don't think so as it came with the machine.
But if someone says that it has been possible, I will ask to check.

Also, to add to my previous post.
We DO recommend you get KTA RAM as KVR RAM MAY not work.
So if you decide to risk it and get KVR and it works, then awesome for you.
But I tried before and it doesn't work with mine.

It's good that he was polite, but as a premium reseller, we should not be giving out wrong information. sleep.gif
I really apologize for that, and hope that this does help answer your question a bit.

Hi Miss Moo,

Thanks for the advice~! smile.gif

I think I got all the answers I need.
I will get iMac with 1GB first. Then will upgrade only if I need the extra performance... and will look out for KTA RAM.

Thanks again for everyone's inputs~! nod.gif

i just want to warn anyone trying to upgrade ram in an imac that it is not as easy as the apple site would have u think. the tiny screw which holds the panel for the ram slots is a self-retaining type, meaning it will continue to stick to the removable panel no matter how hard u try to separate them. the worse part is that it is made out of some soft alloy that burrs easily. at the end of the procedure you may end up with a badly mis-shapened screw which no screwdriver will ever fit for that second upgrade.

after having the tiny screw loosened, prying the panel away from the actual bodice of the imac will drive anyone nuts. it is so tough to get out that u will no doubt try to pry it with a flat screwdriver. at the end of the day the bottom edge will be badly scratched. once u succeed slotting in the ram will only take a few seconds.

i do not want to deter anyone from upgrading but it is not for the faint-hearted.

my own research has found that the answer is quite obscure.
Please don't quote me on this, do some more research to validate my finding. if your Mac explodes, melts (LOL) or looks you in the eye and says "Do you feel lucky?" ... I'm not responsible!

apparently Macs supply less current than the JEDEC specification. this can cause kernel panics and other interesting results on Macs using non-KTA RAM.

other than Mac Mini, RAM for Macs is a user level upgrade.

allvin
iMac HDD is not a user upgrade. Please don't give wrong information here, that can lead to someone accidentally voiding their warranty.

everyone else
please don't simply say la. show some sources, especially if you don't work in an Apple reseller.

Upgraded my 2.8Ghz imac frm 2GB to 4GB without a hassle. I'm using mushkin ram (lowyat, startec computer, <rm300 total). no freeze no melting here since Dec smile.gif Kinda heavy user, with photoshop, multi OSes, downloads etc. iMac stays on for several days at a time.

Just remember,
1) Loosen the screw only (dont expect it to come out at full length and fall out)
2) Stop screwing once you notice it can't go further.
3) Get a smaller flathead, pry the lid out frm the sides & edges, then pull using own fingers.
4) Pull the plastic tab gently but firmly, it will loosen the ram or pops it out.
5) Insert new ram, note which side should face up based on the groove.

Lastly, test it out like so http://www.flickr.com/photos/skywalker/212...57603345724359/

Friend, u shouldn't be worry, based on my experience, "KVR" type will do if your Mac is Intel processor. I bought my kingston KVR 2GB x 2 from Low Yat about RM350/-. They work on my : IMac and MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel C2Duo. But my Mac mini and PowerBook which use G4 processor, they require "KTA" RAM. KVR Ram will make these machinese freeeeeeeezeeee.

There is no better or worse, just that kvr is not yet tested, kta is tested.

Once you open up the macbook. you have already void the warranty. Only ram is user serviceable.

i need to upgrade my macbook to 4gb as i run lots of heavy app.... i find it a bit slow running the standard apps.... may try my luck tomorrow in getting a kvr ram as kta rams costs very high....

i got my mb from machines less than aweek ago..... i must say that their service is great... since i'm from jb.... u get the chance to feel and experience the products b4 u decides to get it.... not many pcs stores does that...

i've calculated the costs to setup such stores, it ain't cheap, and i'm surprised to hear that machines ordered some 500 units of MBA which comes to more than RM3M in rrp!!!!, wow machines must have a strong financial backing hence their sales ppl will push their sales highest possible. but melting ram?? that's truly unacceptable.

the worst case is an unbootable mb right?? i will know tomorrow afternoon...
