I dont mind having public transport concession if it's not as ridiculous as now.

Citizen,PRs and exchange students has 50% discount.Thats just too much for us.

I guess i'll just avoid it if possible to keep the living cost down.Walking is good for health too.  flex.gif

It's not a big deal compare to the NEP.

As much as you may loathe limeuu's points, he is actually correct. Transport concession is a very sensitive issue because the boundaries don't stop there. When you allow transport concession to international students, should you then also open up other forms of concessions such as student allowance, CSP, etc. The reason being the argument for international student concession is based upon non-dsicrimatory policies, but you could apply the same towards the other forms of concessions, can't you?

Anyway, in Sydney, a blue TravelTen costs $14 and a brown one $24, the 2 most commonly used denominations. Those are valid for 10 trips (how often do you need to use it? you don't have time to go out everyday). Surely, that can't be TOO expensive (you'll earn it back in less than 2 hours flipping burgers)? The bus services are good and efficient (not as good as it can be like in Singapore or HK), but way better than what you get in Malaysia. If you're on a scholarship, you get transport allowance, and if you're not, you must have factored in this cost as part of your expenditure.

QUOTE(limeuu @ Feb 26 2008, 08:03 PM)
gst is a consumption tax, and agree students pay it too, but so do tourist and visitors.......can't quite claim for refund, although many countries allow gst refund for visitors......students don't buy new cars (at least they don't before, unless things have changed) or property..........and 20 hours/week at minimum wage don't quite bring you into major tax bracket........and all these certainly does amount to any significant contribution to oz economy to claim equal rights..........

i think we are all aware full fees contribute to the funding of oz public education, but not quite 'support the entire university system in Australia'.........but there are obviously NO shortage of people who willingly allow themselves to be 'taken advantaged of'.........there must obviously a strong pull factor........nobody puts a gun on your head to study full fees there........

finally, it is a measure of their sense of fair play, that the court actually rules to accord visitors and temporary residents the same privileges as citizens...........in sharp contrast to institutionalised discriminations against sections of citizenship in some countries...........

Used cars attract stamp duties too. It doesn't matter what tax bracket you're in, you're still part of the tax system. Furthermore, as an Australian resident for tax purposes (meaning they pay Australian tax on their worldwide income), it is only fair that international students gain the benefits of it.

not really........if your taxable income is less than 6k a year you pay no tax, and income between 6k to 30k pay 15% marginat rate, so 20 hrs/week minimum wage comes to maybe 10K a year, you pay 15% of 4k, or $600.........not quite heaving the economy along........

in any case, as a foreigner, you should be thankful they allow you to work partime......you are supposed to be there as a a FULL time student, and NOT working.......this privilege is abused by some students, particularly chinese and indians, who work longer than 20hr/week, and some there more to work and earn money than study......that is why there are new rules that mandate a minimum of tutorials attended to continue......otherwise, the uni will kick you out and student visa revoked.......and NOT automatic extension of visa......some just keeps failing and staying on, working rather than studying....

and students don't have 'world wide' income.......or have things changed nowadays....... blink.gif

As Shakespeare said, there are only 2 things in life that are certain: death and taxes.

I don't see why this is an issue. Limeuu is right: none of us here pay taxes. Everyone pays GST, be it tourists, students, the beggar on the street.

As I've said from the start, there are many factors one have to take when choosing a university, not just the name of the university, not is a certain university is good for a particular course. And if you're (or your parents) are paying, cost is one factor, and knowing which state gives concessions to international students is one of the factors in deciding where I ended up.

You cant say the universities haven't warned you. I picked up the 2008 INTERNATIONAL student prospectus for Melbourne U and UNSW today, and they very clearly say under "living expences" that international students DO NOT get concession fares on public transport, plus a estimate of $30/week for public transport costs. All in plain English, in font size 12.

It is a known fact that many people abuse the student visa. I lived with Indians, and they spent more time working than in uni. Sure, they rake in $1000/week doing 3 jobs, enrolled in a easy course in a dodgy university, but at the end of the day it is unfortunate people like me, who didn't do so well, and have to retake subjects a possibly face the battle of extending my student visa for legitimate reasons, that will suffer.

That's why I always tell Malaysians: don't do stupid things. Its bad enough that Indians and Asians have a bad name; its even worst when in "3 races Malaysia" we have BOTH Asians and Indians!

KVReninem, if not spelling, at least learn how to paragraph. This is why I ask for proper English. I'm not asking it to be enforced Lowyat.net wide; you can use your short forms in the Kopitiam. I'm not even asking for it to be enforced in the Education Essentials subforum. All i ask, is that all participants of the Studying in Australia thread, who persumably should have a IELTS score of 6, to use proper English. Is that too much to ask?

so stop complaining......if there is any complain you want to make, it should be against YOUR own government, why you have/need to go overseas to study, when your parents have paid msian taxes all their lives, and got nothing back in return.........

i agree with you in that, not to mention that the aussie ppl pay more taxes almost comparable to other countries, so it's fair that they invest in their own ppl cause at the end of the day, it is them(local students) that's gonna supplement the tax system for the pension/welfare and etc in the future.

hehe jk.
I go back my country I See, I Feel, I Heard - rants, shisssts, name it and things aint getting better.I have to move and get out of this context to see what a developed country offer and be a global citizen.
Limeuu, you are going to be medical student as far as i recalled, you got into unimelb if i`m not mistaken. A good question to you, why do you come to australia for medical degree 5 years and pay high inflation projected for 6 raise next few years? And damn you asked me to stay in Malaysia and face the damn NEP, (our chua soi lek so smartness go and screw someone), our chinese so called MCA is handshaking with the *animal who point keris to chinese and media worldwide asking for bloodbath*, the Indian who make noise and they got bullied, and our Prime minister who like to sleep in conference?*heard you tak suka u keluar the other days* sweat.gif, so i choose to KELUAR, happy ?
You asked me to go back for better future? maybe thats for you mate icon_rolleyes.gif i should say this.
Ask you one more thing, will you go back and serve malaysia? because i just heard recently from my friend, he rant to me the doctors in one of the general hospital is pure bloody shit class and he asked me where the hell is my dad, uncle, your dad, his dad tax money paid by them to so called BN govt and get something as this situation, *you mau macam mana? kemo ke, bayar bill keluar ke?, instead of giving a good option to prolong patient live? get the idea?
you say? your future as medical person as a profession, how will you help your country?
the reason i`m alittle arise by the bill by transport minister is because it can help to boost melbourne economy rather than sinking it.think twice.Intl Student pay to everything, include work tax, you say you still support it which deep trouble connex who cant solve the trouble sardines train from pakenham and cranbourne daily? what if the uni`s turn shits, what will victoria state get? nothing. Ripping off the locals? just a little of concession isnt tat gonna benefit something they dont see?
nothing is free in this generation, everyone knows.

yeah man i agree with you, unless you're sponsored by the malaysian goverment then you have no choice but to work there, i'm just like you a global citizen. And when i choose to study overseas my mom told me clearly that i don't come back to Malaysia to work here and go get your PR straight off, which at 1st i feel a bit offended since i want to work in Sarawak, but yeah for me probably it's the better choice and i felt fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study overseas with my parents $$$. And btw i also hav a friend who study in melbourne and his dad bought an apartment which is like 2 mins walk to the university i also asked him either he's looking to come back and work in Malaysia, he said 'for what work there', so i assume his older brother who's a med. student will not come back to work in Malaysia. Btw if you read today's paper 'The Age', there was an editorial regarding the election in Malaysia and not to mention the references regarding the richest chief minister in Malaysia. Anyway i may not work in Malaysia, but my state Sarawak will always be in my heart and also the people there who deserve MUCH MORE from the state government.

Ah, Michael Backman. Even if you disagree with him, you have to admit he has a point.
