rentals there are generally quoted in weeks...........so rental of 150 means $150/week......you also have to acertain whether utilities are included, if not to add another 15-20/week usually.....
and other than student accommodation, most private rentals do NOT come with furnitures or appliances........ |

calling direct from a payphone is gonna cost you an arm and a leg.........
buy a call card, lots of them from news vendors.......but not the fine prints.......since you will be calling from public payphones, get those with free call access numbers so you don't need to pay at the payphone, but there may be an access charge, or the call rates may be higher......... |

some 'transaction' accounts do not give interests.......but may come with unlimited free electronic and counter transactions.........
some will give interests, but will either come with a monthly 'maintainance' charge, or limited free transactions(excess transactions will be charged), or both........ but they all will have associated or 'sub' accounts, which are ONLY electronically accessible, and comes with high interests.........so most people will keep a minimal amount in the main account, and the bulk of funds in the subaccount, but when you need money, you will need to electronically transfer the money from the sub account to the main account so you can withdraw at the atm........the good news is, most branches will have internet terminals for you to do that........... in practice, there is really NO need to go to the bank at all.........everything can be done electronically, either internet from home, or at any atm, or direct debit/eftpos/debit visa/master payment, or cash out at eftpos....... anyone, anywhere, as long as it is a double degree offered, and you meet the higher of the two degree's entry requirements.........
Added on February 19, 2008, 9:09 pmif at end of first degree, it is not a double degree liao........it is called a change of career track! double degree means doing two degrees at the same time........and must be applied for specifically, you can't get into a degree, and then say you want to do another degree at the same time........the time table is completely different from doing either of the 2 degrees alone...... time is saved, as about 25% of any course is electives, and in double degrees, the electives of one is the core subjects of the other........ QUOTE(Cruzer @ Feb 19 2008, 09:24 PM) not necessarily true? there are 2 types of electives.......one is the electives for you core subject.........the other is open electives, ie anything you like, can be totally out of your core subject.........it is the later that i refer to.........how bout eng/ com ppl some courses, subjects are not related to each other.... what i do know is that , they filter out some subjects ( non- core subs ) i think u dun study any elective throughout ur course... double degrees are usually unrelated......if they are related, it is called double major, and you get one degree......... so you get combinations like law/eng, IT/business, even medicine/law etc......... |

they will generally not bother with your notebooks.......the pilot cases were sting operations, where there was a tip off, and it is NOT about general adult porn, they couldn't care less about that, but it was about pedophilia....which the oz authorities are REALLY serious about.........
and NEVER check in anything of value, like a notebook, from msia, especially going through klia, almost 100% it will NOT arrive...........i kid you not.......... |

mainland chinese are tricky, and quite different from overseas chinese in msia and spore.........so yes you are right to be weary.......and i would continue to keep looking.......
alternatively, just take it, at least for the 1st semester, and use the time to look for a better place........it might work out okay anyway....... |

QUOTE(mooze @ Feb 22 2008, 09:29 PM) ok, to avoid the quarantine hassle, i just leave all food behind then.. do NOT change your money into traveller's cheques, it's an obsolete means of fund carriage or transfers......you loose lots in exchange margins and charges.........next, about money.. currently i've got 1800AUD cash in hand, but relatives scold me for not making travellers cheque.. at first i did want to make one but when i went to maybank, they said they don't make travellers cheque anymore, not sure if it was just that branch or for all maybanks.. anyone have suggestions? i'm pretty sure i can handle the cash but of course being first-timer to go oversea alone, i haven't earn reputation among relatives to show that i can do it.. oh well, maybe they're right.... so could u guys let me know what/where correct procedure to convert some of the AUD cash in my hand to travellers cheque? lets say 1300AUD cheque will there be any exchange rate conversion or something when i make the cheque since i've already got the AUD cash currency in hand? keep whatever cash you may need for immediate expenses, $500 should be enough for the first few days, especially if you got accommodation already sorted out..........however, since you have already converted into oz $, don't change it again, every time you convert you loose money.........just bring the whole thing in cash, and be careful....... what you should have done is, convert you rm into an oz $ bank draft in your name........that is the cheapest way of fund transfer from msia..........open an account when you arrive and bank the draft in, it clears usually in 3-5 working days...........future fund transfers can be this way........the drafts are safe to be sent to you by registered post...... for back up, should you run into trouble, bring along you msian atm card(s), those with either plus or cirrus at the back, you can withdraw oz$ anytime at any of the atm with the plus/cirrus sign......make sure you have some money in you msian account.........the oz bank will then convert the amount you withdrew into rm, and your bank here will then deduct the amount from your account here, plus a 'small' service charge, about rm5-20 per transaction........obviously you don't want to withdraw small amount each time, the bigger the amount, the smaller the charge relatively....... of course, if you dad is rich and generous, you may get a supplementary credit card as back up......you can use it to buy things, but never use it to withdraw cash at the atm...... you be charged high fees and ahlong interests........ |

QUOTE(mooze @ Feb 22 2008, 10:03 PM) nope, not gonna bring the food, end of that story, was kind of my stupid idea in 1st place, i dont even know how to cook... you could google, but since i am at a loose end tonight, here goes.......though mum was kind of excited about the thought of bringing stuff to cook there, so she had listed and took these stuff when we went shopping earlier, then so many recipes she cited by words, i didnt try to memorize or write it down .. so normal bank draft/cheque can be brought to aussie bank by hand? but could i use the AUD cash in my hand to make the bank draft/cheque? i dont see the difference between travelling cheque and bank draft/cheque.. travellers cheques is an old system of 'travel money' where it is recognised in many countries as equivalent to cash........so you buy them in denominations like normal cash......and spend them similarly at restaurants, hotels etc........and they are 'safe' in the sense that if they are stolen, you can report it, and you will get refunded, unlike cash........ it is of course completely replaced by plastic.........ie credit cards like visa, mastercard ete....... bank draft, on the other hand, is like a cheque, except that only the bank can issue, as it will be in the currency of the destination country, and like cheques, it can ONLY be credited into a bank account of the payee.......you certainly cannot use it to pay for you meals, hotels etc..........it's cheap, only rm5 per cheque........and you either carry it by hand and bank it into your account when you go, or your parents can post it to you in future, and when you receive it, just go to the bank and bank it in, just like any other cheques........ |

QUOTE(wKkaY @ Feb 22 2008, 10:51 PM) Prepare to wait several weeks for a Malaysian bank draft to clear if you deposit it here. Not to mention that if you lose the bank draft, you're screwed. the drafts are drawn on an oz bank, not a msian bank........like i said, it clears mostly in 3 working days......do that all the time.........if the draft is lost, bring the carbon copy they always gives you, and go back to the bank for either a reissue, or conversion back to rm.......but it has never happened so far..........I recommend that you bring over maybe AU$500 in cash, and wire transfer (TT) the rest of it after you've opened a bank account. It takes only a few (3?) days to clear, and it's also very safe. don't tt.........it's expensive, you get charged both at msian and oz..........it meant for fast remittance, like an emergency.......otherwise, just use the bank draft and post it........ i think you all have to see all this in perspective.....
the 'concessions' actually means a subsidy from the public purse.......which means their tax money....... they pay high taxes, and therefore rightly expect some returns in services, be it education, parks, concessions etc........ you as an international student, have NOT contributed anything at all to the country, nor did your parents.......therefore cannot expect to enjoy the same benefits as the locals...... your fees is the REAL cost of education there, plus a bit of profit.......the locals pay about 1/3, the balance being subsidised by the public purse (called commonwealth supported places), and citizens can defer paying their fees, till they graduate and start work, once their income exceeds a predetermined threshold, the IRD starts cutting some deductions from their salary for paying this debt......... a very fair, and equitable system.......... thus those in states with transport concessions, should be thankful they are so generous to you.....they do NOT have to........ in the old days, they were even more generous, and some of your parents actually had 'free' education in oz (and nz, uk, and canada), actually again subsidised by their tax payers........these days are long gone....... exchange students are different, they are 'exchange' ie from another country, in exchange for an aussie to study there.......thus they accord the same privileges to exchange students, as the other countries accord the same to the aussie students overseas..........understand......? so stop complaining......if there is any complain you want to make, it should be against YOUR own government, why you have/need to go overseas to study, when your parents have paid msian taxes all their lives, and got nothing back in return......... QUOTE(RBR @ Feb 26 2008, 07:35 PM) Of course they do pay tax. GST is a tax, and international students pay that. When you rent property, there's tax involved. Buy cars or property, there's stamp duty which is a tax. Many students work as well. gst is a consumption tax, and agree students pay it too, but so do tourist and visitors.......can't quite claim for refund, although many countries allow gst refund for visitors......students don't buy new cars (at least they don't before, unless things have changed) or property..........and 20 hours/week at minimum wage don't quite bring you into major tax bracket........and all these certainly does amount to any significant contribution to oz economy to claim equal rights..........Full fees basically support the entire university system in Australia. Plus, as the NSW Tribunal has ruled, not giving international students concession is discrimination. i think we are all aware full fees contribute to the funding of oz public education, but not quite 'support the entire university system in Australia'.........but there are obviously NO shortage of people who willingly allow themselves to be 'taken advantaged of'.........there must obviously a strong pull factor........nobody puts a gun on your head to study full fees there........ finally, it is a measure of their sense of fair play, that the court actually rules to accord visitors and temporary residents the same privileges as citizens...........in sharp contrast to institutionalised discriminations against sections of citizenship in some countries........... |

QUOTE(PeNNyPupZ @ Feb 26 2008, 07:44 PM) aww limeuu why are you so touchy? you're the governor of Melbourne? lol.. and furthermore, we're just complaining here.. this is a casual forum where we malaysians discuss stuff? ultimately, it's the bloody government's decisions whether we international students are entitled to concession rates or not.. i am giving a perspective view of the issues here.........so people know why certain decisions and policies are made........I don't see why we should STOP complaining HERE.. if you're getting an eyesore (in which you should ban yourself from this forum) reading what we write then don't bloody bother! You, too, are entitled to your views. but don't bloody come here and go "STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS COUNTRY BUT COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR OWN COUNTRY INSTEAD". Just my two bloody cents okay, my bad, i can't tell you all not to complain, ventilation is a good way of venting frustrations...... not being touchy, doesn't affect me at all actually, just to set the facts right......... Limeuu, you are going to be medical student as far as i recalled, you got into unimelb if i`m not mistaken. A good question to you, why do you come to australia for medical degree 5 years and pay high inflation projected for 6 raise next few years? And damn you asked me to stay in Malaysia and face the damn NEP, (our chua soi lek so smartness go and screw someone), our chinese so called MCA is handshaking with the *animal who point keris to chinese and media worldwide asking for bloodbath*, the India who make noise and they got bullied, and our Prime minister who like to sleep in conference?*heard you tak suka u keluar the other days* You asked me to go back for better future? maybe thats for you mate Ask you one more thing, will you go back and serve malaysia? because i just heard recently from my friend, he rant to me the doctors in one of the general hospital is pure bloody shit class and he asked me where the hell is my dad, uncle, your dad, his dad tax money paid by them to so called BN govt and get something as this situation, *you mau macam mana? kemo ke, bayar bill keluar ke?, instead of giving a good option to prolong patient live? get the idea? you say? your future as medical person as a profession, how will you help your country? the reason i`m alittle arise by the bill by transport minister is because it can help to boost melbourne economy rather than sinking it.think twice.Intl Student pay to everything, include work tax, you say you still support it which deep trouble connex who cant solve the trouble sardines train from pakenham and cranbourne daily? what if the uni`s turn shits, what will victoria state get? nothing. Ripping off the locals? just a little of concession isnt tat gonna benefit something they dont see? nothing is free in this generation, everyone knows. complain like bird singing in shrine of remembrance, ,melb and where did i ever ask anyone to stay in msia?......... i am fully aware of the issues of msian domestic education and its problems..... as foreign students, oz has an obligation to provide you an education for money, and nothing extra.......that is all i am pointing out amidst all the ranting and raving about transportion costs......we all know a majority of full fees students (from all over, not just msia) goes there with the intention of eventually settling there.......but until such time you get your residency papers, you are still a full fees international student with a dream....... put yourself in the other shoes........how do you feel about indonesian and bangla students studying in msian ipta, taking places from you, given the same privileges as you........ QUOTE(RBR @ Feb 27 2008, 09:05 AM) Used cars attract stamp duties too. It doesn't matter what tax bracket you're in, you're still part of the tax system. Furthermore, as an Australian resident for tax purposes (meaning they pay Australian tax on their worldwide income), it is only fair that international students gain the benefits of it. not really........if your taxable income is less than 6k a year you pay no tax, and income between 6k to 30k pay 15% marginat rate, so 20 hrs/week minimum wage comes to maybe 10K a year, you pay 15% of 4k, or $600.........not quite heaving the economy along........in any case, as a foreigner, you should be thankful they allow you to work partime......you are supposed to be there as a a FULL time student, and NOT working.......this privilege is abused by some students, particularly chinese and indians, who work longer than 20hr/week, and some there more to work and earn money than study......that is why there are new rules that mandate a minimum of tutorials attended to continue......otherwise, the uni will kick you out and student visa revoked.......and NOT automatic extension of visa......some just keeps failing and staying on, working rather than studying.... and students don't have 'world wide' income.......or have things changed nowadays....... |
