Edit: On another note, is it possible to opt for a combined engineering/commerce degree instead of the single degree once I get there or do I have to apply for it beforehand? The website isn't very clear on it and I'm lazy to email them... icon_question.gif
*
You can do a combined Computer Engineering and Commerce degree (5.5 years). As you are a direct applicant, it is advisable for you to apply for the combined program before you get accepted as the entry scores for Commerce is much higher than Engineering, hence you must meet those required for Commerce prior to gaining a place. For Combined programs, the program with the higher entry score is the equivalent entrance score for both programs.

If you decide to get into Commerce when you're here, it will be more difficult as you will have to apply through UAC again.

i think may be i should go to IDP to check it out.. how is Macquarie Uni ? is dat very good?
*
Macquarie is the best uni in Australia for Actuarial Studies. It has most experience in conducting the course and is the oldest actuarial department in Australia. However, by comparison, the actuarial course in Mq is tougher than other uni. Some actuarial knowledge which is learned in Mq during 1st year is actually the syllabus for second year in Melb Uni, for instance. The tuition fees are significantly lower than Melb Uni but is considerably much the same with ANU, UNSW and Curtin.

My (brief) experience with 3's mobile broadband is in the front page. In a nutshell: don't expect to use it for anything heavier than normal websurfing.

Took me about 3 weeks to get mine.

To all those who are working part time while studying: do you have to pay super? It seems my employer (a certain supermarket chain) is taking a cut from my pay to pay for super. I was under the impression that international students, while Australian citizens for tax purposes, can opt-out from contributing to a Superannuation fund.

I tried reading up, but I frankly can't understand half of what the taxation literature is talking about.

Employers have to pay super for you if you are eligible.
To be eligible you must:
- be at least 18 years of age and under 70
- be paid at least $450 (before tax) in a calendar month, and
- work full time, part-time or on a casual basis.

If you are under 18, you are eligible for compulsory super guarantee if you work more than 30 hours a week.

If you are eligible for super, your employer must pay a minimum of 9% of your earnings for your ordinary hours of work into your super account. These payments are ‘super guarantee’ payments or ‘employer contributions’.

As temporary residents, international students who have worked in Australia are eligible to access their super once they permanently depart Australia.

To access you super, instructions and forms can be found on the ATO Website

Hope that helps! biggrin.gif

Remember, smoking is very strongly regulated in Australia.
No smoking indoors...etc

And during summer, when there is a total fire ban, you may not smoke at all.

17th August is also Melbourne Uni's open day. The most generous faculty in terms of freebies is commerce and the most stingy is medicine.

they don't even need to have 'open day' for undergraduate medicine......there are many more times eligible applicants than places.....

we will see how the graduate entry application numbers are like in 2011.........many graduate programmes find that they are NOT attracting the best students......
