If you're looking for private teacher, you can try to get in touch with orchestra players. DBKL, RTM, NSO, all teach and charge the fees per class. Be prepared that lowest rate of one class (45mins to 1hour on instrument only) is RM50, and some charge as high as RM120 or even RM200 (of course that's super profesional) per hour, usually regardless of what grade you are.

Best if you ask your teacher to help you out, but actually not really the best depends on your teacher (as some teacher will potong you with overpriced instruments cause he want to earn). But luckily my teacher is kind enough to happily bring nice instruments for me.

If you're serious about learning violin, you can always buy violin around RM1500 which you have a better sound to start with as the RM300 violins (some) has really harsh/thin sound. Don't worry about the resale value, violin generally has high resale value, with care from owner you can resale your violin virtually at same price you bought, and sometimes more cause violin's sound quality will increase over the years of usage.

Instruments available at Euro music is pretty nice.

pigcat has a good point there....if u r really serious this may be a long term passion...get a good violin...the china ones are like dead wood..good enough to be burn but its great for ppl who are not really sure violin are their thing:)

hi kimmie and pigcat
thanks a lot...
i might go to the city square to have a look. i assume there will be ppl to help me pick an instrument?

rm1500 .. a little steep... maybe i get a beginner violin first ... grow on it then change it when my skills evolve?...
i'm so eager to start the lesson....

some other questions :
in malaysia, the price includes the bow, case, shoulder rest, etc?
what should it be in the package? what should i look for? sorry, no experience in this...

thanks ya!

usually violin would come in a case....bow included...but rosin, shoulder rest, books, extra strings must be brought separately....prices for china made beginner violin would cost around rm300-rm500 i guess

i found these 2 articles informative :
1. http://www.zaretandsonsviolins.com/choosingviolin.html
2. http://www.zaretandsonsviolins.com/goodtoneviolin.html

but... dont really know most of the term... only thing i learned is must be LOUD....erm....

u think if i go to the shop they would have ppl there who know how to play? i obviously cant...
after reading from pigcat... i was thinking of getting a better beginner violin... around 500-1k...
so what can i get from that budget?

any suggestions on any brand? (i know not suppose to judge brand but ....)

Hi Storm04, I bought my violin around RM700++ at Early Venture Music, Taman Danau Desa. the violin he introduced to me has a good tone for beginner. the maker is Eastman Strings. I'm quite satisfied with the sound comparing to the RM300 one. If you are aiming for a warmer tone, then you should consider the over RM1k's violin, older wood, wooden tailpiece + synthetic strings.
Last time when I bought my violin there, the boss there explained almost everything about the violin to me. you should go there and take a look. I don't have the address now.

i think i would like warmer tone... actually i was also considering taking cello as i love the mellow sound... but it is so hard to get a teacher as i asked several shops. no cello teacher...

hmm. is it possible to find out more about the shop contact?

sorry, i'm kinda geography challenged. taman danau desa is same as desa water park rite?

Click on the maps, I think its located somewhere near the circle. The shop is located at the first floor. If im not mistaken, downstair is video rental shop. Hope you can locate it. You might as well ask for cello class there. I think they have teacher who can teach cellos. Hope i din give the wrong info.
