Ohh! Cool!

I have three neighbours practising piano daily but yeah they do that before 10.  smile.gif
How much did you get your violin and where are you learning? I will want to know as much as I can before I really start so that I know what to expect. Don't want to quit halfway out of inconvinience.

I bought mine for RM300. I'm learning at The Guitar Store in Damansara Perdana. Beginners course is RM100/month with 30 minutes per session.

Hello. I have been reading this forum for some time anf this is my first post here. For those of you out there, learning at any age doesn't matter so long as you have an interest and committment and not just out of the spur of the moment. It usually won't last long before you give up. I am 48 years old and only started learning to play the violin in late 2007 and my teacher is more than half my age. Since then, I have been making steady progress. I started late because, when young my parent could not afford to send me for music lessons and no violin school here. Later was due to work, marriage and children. Now with most things settled down, I can have the time to learn the violin and to read notes. I believe most adults take up music is because they want to be able to play the song instead of hearing others play just like me. Love your music, constant practice and patience, soon you will be able to play well. biggrin.gif

Regards

zomg now only looking for a violinist? it's too hard to find one especially already 4pm when you posted this. some more on forum, you don't scare if you kena one tipu makan violinist?

by the way, even if a violinst willing to play for you and the show is successful, be prepare to pay at least 150% of the original pay. be sure to treat someone who save your day better.

Hi .. I'm new to this forum but have been an adult violin student for about 2+ years now. Played grade 6 piano when I was in primary school.

Why don't you go and try chambers music in sg wang? its one of the top floors near the middle escalator and they have a small room of violins. I got my eurostring there when i first bought mine. The sales guy is helpful and even tested the violins for me (I was just a beginner then) heh. Then I got my strings changed in a small violin shop in PJ.

happy shopping!

Chambers music people have very little knowledge about musicla instruments..yet they dare to tell you BS. I asked for a curved soprano sax swab and they said' Soprano sax is straight only ma. Where got soprano sax curved one in this world?' Stupid moron!

i don't recommend chamber music for few reasons.

first reason being pretty obvious, prime area + shopping complex, they have to mark up the price a lot more to cover their maintenance and cost.

2nd reason, in regards of string instruments, they don't have knowledgeable person to take care the instruments they sell. so there might be hidden damages like humidity/soundpost/endpin that neither the sales person or customer (unless knowledgeable) will notice.

the rest being personal preferences, so no point to voice out here.

PS: i recommend early music venture and euro music simply because they specialize in string instruments, and have in house luthier (repairman) to take care the instruments. on top of that, they sell their stuff at reasonable price.

Hey, guys. Just wondering if you guys use a shoulder rest to play violin.

Playing without the shoulder rest supposedly makes the sound nicer right? What is good about playing with and without the shoulder rest?

Shoulder rest does 'choke' the violin a bit as it clams around the body...so logically it does alter the tone. It is used by those who have longer necks. If you have short neck you dont need one.

make sure the shoulder rest isn't tight, and it should leave a little space, but be careful that the shoulder rest might just slip off after years of usage, the rubber will eventually lost the grip.

actually, shoulder rest should provide the least damping to the violin body. think about it, how much space it take the shoulder rest to dampen the plate, compare to your shoulder? which part vibrate more, the center of the plate (where your shoulder touches), or the edge of the plate (shoulder rest clamps)? i did a test recently, turned out that without shoulder rest the sound dampen the most, and sound best with a shoulder rest that slightly loose where it doesn't add any weight to the plate.

some people claim that the body/bone of the shouder part will also help to resonate the violin, which i don't have much info regarding this.

regardless of the sound, use a shoulder rest if you have a long neck. as long as it doesn't squeeze the violin. it won't have much impact to the sound. i wouldn't trade sound for uncomfortable playing, it makes no point at all if you have a better voice but you can't sing well.
