QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Mar 22 2008, 12:23 AM) If a tortoise has soft shell.... sunning and normal calcium intake would be slow.... I dunno what progress would happen coz I had 1 star that was like that before, it died within a year.... I was feeding it calcium powder and sunning him too. The right way to treat would be lots of sun, high calcium foods and also calcium injections.... must do weekly or something. This is a faster way to get the calcium absorbed into the body to harden the shell... vet told me this 5 years ago..... coz my star died 5 years ago. Now my current 6 year old star is healthy with a very hard shell. my ST is still juvenile..age about 5 month i think....yup, its normal to have soft shell ...isn it? QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Mar 22 2008, 12:31 AM) Mine was also small.... it was like 2 inches.... already you can know if it is having problem. Young stars have spongy shells, not soft shell.... soft shell is like.... erm... if you press the shell easily with slight force, it means soft.... spongy is not soft, is like still solid but like spring a bit.... Hard to explain, I can only show it LOL. mine is just 3 cm... 1 inch ++ a little.... OiC.....mine is spongy then , thanks for the info..

QUOTE(Skatila @ Mar 21 2008, 06:44 PM) my juvenile star tort...shell and CpC still soft...should i fed them with calcium and vit supplement each time i give them food or just once per day? My suggestion, you better 'asingkan' the juvinile star tortoise ( soft shell ) from the bigger size than them to make sure they are safe. Its happend to me before, i mix all the size together & end up, the shell of juvenile ST 'TERKOPAK'. I dont know why... Maybe because the bigger size like to steps of the juvenile. My juvenile ST died on the next day because of too much bleeding . I learn from the lesson Added on March 22, 2008, 12:46 amQUOTE(dai86 @ Mar 22 2008, 12:39 AM) fat cat, yup. is my male star. have it for about...3 to 4 years di. haha... wah. see picture also know is male! haha... very naughty tortoise. he would keep on bullied other star that smaller than him. thats y i still separate him from the female. hehe... This wan vet tell me wan o. Yeah lor. My Biggerst ST always disturb & 'pijak'2 all the smaller ST. She also like to 'sapu' all the food before the smaller start to eat. So, better saparate them.

You can't tell the sex of a star when it is that young. Need at least 4 inches onwards. Also, hatchlings do not show pyramiding in their first few months.... you will only see it once it reaches a year... and that is if the way and diet you feed is incorrect.
Becareful of size.... star tortoises that are below 3 inches are very prone to falling ill and dying.... they are super sensitive to their surroundings, especially humidity.
