Just got my Alligator Snapping Turtle today! It was a hard decision actually cuz the smaller one was much more interesting but with a broken tail. I made sure the big one was eating and healthy before i finally chose it.
It has moved into its tank and has already started eating (although it doesn't seem too bright. It's frequently trying to lure fishes at the wrong side. like fishes on right side it open mouth lure on left side). Also has a peculiar habit. The small one, when you touch its head it will open its mouth in defense. The big one that I bought, when you touch its head it will make its butt stand higher than its head (like made its legs straight up). An odd lil snapper. But very cute. Hehe... Attached image(s) |

QUOTE(camillenoir @ Jan 29 2008, 06:33 AM) Both mouth wide open and butts-up are normal defense mechanism in alligator snappers. Wah. I didn't know butt up means that. It didn't even open its mouth, so I thought its "opening" the wrong end. Be careful when the snapper do the 'butts-up', because it can jump, turn and snap quite fast from that pose. I put it in a large glass tank. It has lots of space to swim unlike the little plastic tank I saw them in when I bought. Its more interested in hiding under the driftwood though. The tank is put outside, currently it's bare bottomed with only 1 driftwood and several little fishes. Anything else I need? When it grows up a little more, I'm planning to shift it to a slightly larger tank with filter. I think the small Alligator Snapping Turtle is still available although the aunty mentioned that someone spoke of his interest to purchase the little fella. No deposit has been placed on the small one yet so it is still available. You can ask for RM 330, I think the aunty will sell lar. This post has been edited by Jamien: Jan 29 2008, 12:23 PM |

^^" Ic. So you're actually interested or not? She was trying to sell it off. I have to admit it's rare since ally is hard to find and definitely not in that size.

Wow, so you'd better not. I have to say, allies grow quite large. About 26" when full grown. I'm going to have to build a pond just for it when I have my own house. Counting the spaces, just about all the space in the house will get taken by my pets. I was tempted to take the small one too but I can't afford the space it needs when it grows up.

QUOTE(sayasebuk @ Jan 29 2008, 02:34 PM) herm still available? im looking for an ally snapper but rm350 is maximum market value.... It is kinda pricey but I've been looking for quite some while. They just don't come in that size anymore (My ally is compared to a 50 cents at my picture above) and ally is just plain hard to find. Many people just try to pass off common as ally. when you say broken tail do you mean, tail biten off or the tail crooked? In fact, I went to Creepy Creatures at USJ Summit when I heard they have ally. The fella told me I have to be ready to offer RM 800 at the very least to get an ally! He kept telling me it's impossible to get an ally which is less than 5-6" in size (just the shell). So I was very excited when dzi921 mentioned ally selling, and small ones at that. Compared to the bombastic prices that I keep hearing in my ears (RM380 - RM800) I was thrilled. Plus I've been wanting it for a couple of years. I think the one in the shop is still for sale. You can get it at RM 330 la. That's the price I got. Its got a very hearty appetite and is a true snapper with a super cool looking pose when it opens its mouth. I personally made sure it ate and was healthy (except the tail). About the tail, when I first saw it, it looked like 2 white spots on the tail. When I went again on Monday, there's only 1 white spot left but... I really think it's broken. It probably got snapped by my snapper or something. It's oddly crooked and has a funny angle. It doesn't look flexible like the rest of the tail. The part of the tail broken is the bottom quarter (I think). The tiny plastic tank they're kept in has hardly enough space for it to turn so its tail can't be spread full length. I think it made the condition worse. When it does that, you can see the bottom quarter of the tail bending almost 75 degrees, and I'm not talking about the elegant S shape or C shape that tails get when they're bent. I mean like the hands of a clock at 4 o'clock or similar. I was really more interested in the small one but the ridges on the big one's shell was better looking and the small one's broken tail really helped me make a decision. If you don't mind the tail, it'll be great. If you really decided to get it, maybe point out the broken tail and ask for a lower price? ^^ If you've decided to get it anyway, then I hope you're ready for the commitment and that you enjoy having it. I'm glad I bought mine. @mamba : ^^ Thanks. I did mention that my snapper is odd? It just makes the butt up signal, it's hard to catch him in action out of tank with open mouth. The fella scared i'll eat his tongue or something. If can I'll try to get the shot la. This post has been edited by Jamien: Jan 29 2008, 05:30 PM |

Ally hatchling is only RM 350. Common is a lot cheaper. ^^" A bit shocked that pet safari also trying to pose common as ally. The subadult snapper i see before. The pet shop fella purposely irritate for me to see so can show how expert he is at handling and how dangerous the snapper is.

QUOTE(anbusan @ Feb 25 2008, 06:43 PM) one of my RES turtle just died today huhu, I don't know why she won't eat and just sleep always... do you have any idea guys? I buy a male and female turtle at the same time and one of them(male) still alive and active. Also, its weak condition means that it has some sort of sickness. My star had an infection of some sort because the place we bought her from was not very clean. But the male star from the same place and bought at the same time is still ok lar. My RES had deep swimming water space and a large basking rock where they can choose to bask any time of the day as long and often as they like without fighting. I tried basking them when the time suits me but they don't like it... So I moved their tank outside, and they became outdoor turtles but their health was superb and was more active than being indoors. Any sight of a person used to drive them into swimming frenzy. My family used to call them "hungry ghost". This post has been edited by Jamien: Feb 25 2008, 11:49 PM |

QUOTE(anbusan @ Feb 26 2008, 10:22 AM) I read article about turtle that said we not be able to tell the gender of our turtle until it is 3 - 4 years old but my younger sister said, the seller tell her to see from pattern of the lower parts hehe don't know it's true or not... just a clue maybe That's what the seller said to me also when I got my RES. One of the gender's lower shell seems somewhat narrower than the other wan. ^^" Or maybe I'm just trying to see it a lot. |

I have a question, my snapper is very small, like the picture i posted earlier. When I first bought her, she only eats 3 feeder fishes. After a while, she eats 5 fishes a day. Now she eats 5 fishes and still eats. Is it healthy to feed her so much? Should I let her eat as much as she can?

She usually waits and snaps the fish. When impatient, she will sometimes kinda lunge forward and snap the fish if it's close enough. ^^" But happens rarely. So I let her eat as much as she wants ar.
