Best bet would be to open two tabs -- take your time with the registration (long page), then in the new tab go to id.konami.net and click continue until you reach the long page registration again.

Then go back to the old tab and press register. That worked for me.

Here's my two cents: Try to find a 60GB (if possible) or 80GB model from either Gamestop or EB Games. If money's a concern, you can always try a used one. Then, buy used copies of any PS2 game that you really, REALLY love (which by your indication, this would include the MGS Essential Collection).

Then, as much of a pain in the ass it may turn out to be, bring them back with you.

IMHO, unless you speak Japanese, a US console with backwards-compatibility is the ultimate way to go. If you don't prefer to have a single-machine that can do it all, then by all means, buy a PS3 here in M'sia (probably Asia regioned) and pickup a cheap PS2 as well. But if you've been in the States for any reasonable amount/length of time and own any PS2 games or DVDs, you will never regret bringing a US console back.

MGS4: Unless you're dying for the Ltd Edition, I'm sure MGS4 will be readily available here in M'sia. Plenty of reputable gameshops locally that you can pre-order from. If not, there's still always Play-Asia.

Just ordered Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection via Playasia. I wanted to collect the whole MGS SAGA. Will get a PS2 unit again since I've sold my fat version. 1 question, PS2 slim with modchip like those found here can run NTSC/UC original disc right?

Any modded PS2 can run PS2 original games!

K I managed to get myself a konami id and already confirmed my email with them. In less than half an hour mind you!

How ?

1. Download firefox's Autoformer Add-on tool.

2. Go to http://id.konami.net and fill in the details. Try to be as accurate as possible. I even used google maps to make sure I had an authentic postbox, city and region in australia. No need to rush. For both of the registration pages, before clicking next click edit > Autoformer > save all fields.

3. Now since u took ur sweet time to give as accurate data as possible, the registration process will likely fail. No sweat. Just retry, BUT this time the autoformer will refill all the necessary data for you. Just click fast fast to the next one! Sure can one ! I did have to retry 4-5 times to get through though.

4. Check email. I got my reply in less than 10 seconds. Click link in email to agree. Will likely fail also. Mine did fail. Retry.

5. Profit!

Now can I ask you kind sirs where can I download the beta file? P2P? Uncle Google didnt know what to tell me.

Oooh. Thanks for the info. PSN Store eh? Currently only having SG, US, JP and AU. Gonna try the US PSN store first, otherwise guess I have to sign up for a UK PSN as well. Since I registered mine as australia I hope the europe one works.
