Munak991 thanks for the info. Also how is the working environment at the hotels will the chef be shouting at you using bad words? I like cooking but I'm worried about the working environment if there a lot of shouting with bad words I don't think this field for me. I don't mind getting negative feedback as long as you tell me nicely

Duckky, i feel sad for this thread, people come and go.
They are no longer active. I created this thread for Culinary student, but so far very little ppl come around here.
Anyway i strongly believe he already graduated.

Hey, Double Ace welcolm to the thread.
Hmmm Shouting bad words? If u perform well Chef usually ignore u and tell u to keep up the good work.
Chef do scold bad words most of the time not to scare u, when they piss them off of course.

Dont worry, Our Chef Motto, what's in the kitchen remain in the kitchen nothing relation to ur life.
Chef shout is to push the kitchen for faster service

Ah yes, Welcolm to the forum.
1st i want to ask, R u Really really die hard cooking is ur life 1st?
Im saying with Degree UR salary is RM 2000++ Diploma im not so sure..
Cause when u start working is start from the lowest just like Form 5 student.

In Hotel Industry there is very minimal pay but, they pay by point system, u got a point and that year each point will be given how much depend on profit of the hotel.
As u progress ur point will be getting higher. I can say Basic Pay is RM 500+ or less.

I can share with u all. Hotel industry is no joke, 70% of student enter this course end up quiting, changing other field.
If u r looking in term of $$, This is not the field.
Anyone can own a restaurant, u got $$ everything no problem.

Better reconsider it kid. =)

Hey munak thanks again for giving all the info. Are you a graduate from taylors? Wta will lecturer give you homework to do, like go home cook a dish then bring to class? Asking bcs the room where I renting they don't allow me to use the kitchen sad.gif and also a bit worried about the pay that a diploma holder chef will be getting sounds like it going to be below average income?? Like cooking but if pay is too low might have to go into a field that have more pay.

Well, Chef will never be sufficient in this world cause everyone need to eat. and for my course? i graduated from Diploma Culinary Arts.
Now doing my Degree, so far u will learn basic cooking, Asian style cooking, French cooking mostly. Lecturer will guide u trough by mistake.
As for the miscellaneous subject: Accounting, Economics, Business Math, English, and etc this will help u to operate a restaurant and become a management level chef where u need to check stock.
Erm, for ur situation a lot of my friend they didn't have kitchen at their campus/hostel/ apartment. They did well honestly. But if u self practice u will improve more of course.

Yes Chef is 1 of the tough job in the industry. You sacrifice a lot of ur time in ur job.
Food Scientist? u mean Nutritionist? There is Food Science related subject going to be on in Taylors College, which is a Diploma, not clear about the subject yet.
Rarely heard food science course offer in the market. U may check online and see.

I was meaning to bring this up...

Well, I have a friend who's really passionate in cooking.
I was wondering if going to an IPTA is okay for him instead of going private, hopefully he won't make a real bad choice.
So is there any huge difference in courses like culinary arts in IPTAs and IPTSs?

Welcolm to the forum =)
Hmmmm, tough debate.
So far i never encounter any Public U student who student culinary Art.
Public U might give Foreign lecturer, =) or some which is local lecturer.
if u r one of the lucky 1 u might send to Oversea to forward ur study.

Private U, most of the college program offered is partner with Foreign U or College.
Taylors is partner with Toulouse University(France) Link 1 Link 2
Sunway University is partner with very famous academy college Le Condon Bleu Link 1
KDU im not so sure.
Inti College is under Genting, so after u learn from them u straght given opportunity to work with Genting Chain ( Singapore, Genting Malaysia, Cruise,) Genting offer 1 of the best service, Food and beverage. =)

So far 3 of the college is by far the best.

the rest of the college is certificate by its own college

Hope i answer ur question

berjaya i think is about 2year plus only....quite new....and i wonder how berjaya become an university..
because an university need to have many graduated student and international student to become university....like nilai, inti, taylor.etc

Hey welcolm,

Government school does offer Cookering class, dont know wherther is a Diploma or just a Certificate. i dont know how Public U handle this. i believe they give Diploma.

With Diploma u can get around RM1000+ but not RM 2000 for fresh grade that is for Degree student. if u r lucky to get RM 2000+ faster go for it.

If you're really interested in this line, I would personally recommend you to go work first for awhile. Work in a kitchen, experience the real life of chefs, see if you can take the heat and decide. There's nothing to loose this way. You gain experience, and money. Experience is very important in this job. You gain more exposure when there are competitions among colleges and sometimes, FHM competition. Or at least work part time in a banquet kitchen.

Really, if you could turn back time I would never have went for college first but rather, work first.

So here's my question for the seniors here, are there any possible ways that I may use my culinary diploma to apply for any other courses that are not related to the service line? I was hoping that I could get into food science but...
