9950 TDP is equal to Intel Core 2 Extreme = 140W
Some news here QUOTE AMD's Upcoming Chipsets Could Bring PCIe 3.0 support - Available in Q2 2009 It seems that today's news is all about AMD and that should make one wonder what the future of the computing industry holds. With all of the company's on-going projects, AMD is bound to make a serious impact through the release of its new product lineup. This time around, we are talking about a possible PCIe 3.0 support for the future AMD-based motherboards. Apparently, the SB800 Southbridge is going to provide the world with PCIe 3.0 support. This means twice as much bandwidth and because there haven't been any rumors regarding a possible Intel project for the PCIe 3.0 support, AMD might just have something going for them. That is if they succeed in being the first to launch a chipset with support for the PCIe 3.0 standard. But the on-going rumors, which we have already talked about, put the new SB800 chipset for a Q2 2009 launch. Also, AMD's chipset roadmap slides that have been posted on the ChileHardware forum have revealed that the SB8XX chipset comes with PCIe 5GHz x 4 support, which would imply that it is PCIe 3.0-ready. But because these are just rumors, we can only presume that AMD is really working on such a project. For the moment, Advanced Micro has other things to worry about, especially with their CPU and graphics product lineup. As most of you know, AMD is expected to launch a Super RV770 graphics card, which is said to end NVIDIA's reign in the high-end graphics cards market. The same cannot be said about the company's upcoming Deneb and Deneb FX processors, which will have to compete with Intel's highly anticipated Nehalem architecture. All one can expect is that the computing market is going to see some revolutionary new technologies being released at competitive prices. QUOTE AMD's SB800 Is a Completely New Southbridge PCIe 3.0... - More details on the company's future chipset have surfaced As we have already presented to you yesterday, details about AMD's chipset roadmap for 2009 have been found loose on the web. But because such information tends to come in bits and pieces, today we found another set of details regarding AMD's future chipsets and this time we get to take a more thorough look at the SB800-series. Thanks to ChileHardware, which has posted another slide from AMD's chipset roadmap, we can now bring more info on Advanced Micro Devices’ next-generation Southbridge. And it looks like we are talking about more than just one version of AMD's future SB800, although there are no details regarding these various models. As compared to AMD's current Southbridge offer, the SB800 is a whole new ball game. It will feature a faster chipset interconnect that will be dubbed A Link Express 3.0 and will use four 5GHz PCIe lanes instead of the four 2.5GHz PCIe lanes that can currently be found on AMD's SB700/750. The SB800 will also be the first AMD Southbridge to feature a PCIe interface, as compared to previous models which had to rely on the Northbridge for all PCIe connectivity. Other features include an integrated Gigabit Ethernet MAC and optional support for up to 6GB/s SATA and AHCI 1.2 with FIS based switching. The new Southbridge will also increase the number of available USB 2.0 ports, from 12 to 14 with AMD even adding a third EHCI USB controller. According to the posted slide, AMD will also add support for an integrated clock, embedded I/O controllers and an improved hardware monitor system, with support for up to 5 fan controllers. From what we can see from the SB800 details, AMD has a real chance of beating Intel's chipset offer. But until Q2 of 2009, when the SB800 is expected to be released, these are just pure speculations. So AMD future graphic card will use PCIe 3.0 huh.I guess its the 6K Series. Source This post has been edited by AMDAthlon: Jul 3 2008, 08:25 AM |

from review, the 9950 consume less power than the 9850BE. But we do need a better power design motherboard. like the one comes with 790FX.
May be should wait for the 790GX mainboard, which will be launch hopefully the end of this month. AMD CPU price update: From the price list disappeared the processor phenom X4 9850 (2.5 GHz) Black edition, although formally it will be sold in parallel with Phenom X4 9950 (2.6 GHz) Black edition for some time. The processor phenom X4 9850 (2.5 GHz) has a limited multiplier, but its price is equal to $235. The processor phenom X4 9750 (2.4 GHz) is now released in the 95 W TDP version , the price of both versions was equal to $215. In the price position $195 was engaged the processor phenom X4 9650 (2.3 GHz), and the model phenom X4 9550 (2.2 GHz) . Let us note that both processors are based on B3 stepping. The three core processors phenom X3 fell in price to the value from 10,3% to 13,8%. AMD removed the models athlon X2 6400+ (3.2 GHz) Black edition and Athlon FX-74 (3.0 GHz). Now appeared the 65 nm processors athlon X2 with high frequencies. Prices of dual core processors were also lowered, maximum by 27,4%. source Mayb is good time to get phenom x3... QUOTE(gtoforce @ Jul 5 2008, 04:10 PM) i dunno about amd, but nehalem is coming out soon for high price and high performance, AMD sure cant compete. But for budget segment, AMD still got strong hold, especially combination with it 780G mainboard. Intel still dont have a powerful integrated chipset for budget segment.and i think amd is kinda dead in the processors game |

i have a noob question here
afaik, 780 chipset supposed to be better than 770 chipset, but why does the MoBo for both are selling at the same price, or 780 1 selling at a cheaper price? |

well, if i wanna upgrade my current 6400+ to phenom 9850/9950 is it worthy?
i mean roughly guys, how many % increment in it n i'll oc it too... i'm planning this to reduce the bottleneck to my gc when doing cf later. |

Just an opinion: Stick with 6400+ for the moment n wait for the price to go down abit more. For oc, maybe can get a motherboard with sb750. Expected to be more ocable.i mean roughly guys, how many % increment in it n i'll oc it too... i'm planning this to reduce the bottleneck to my gc when doing cf later. |

Hmm... 9950 seems to be a better chip (mature stuff it seems) as every review I've seen says it can get to 3Ghz stable (with stock volts it seems)
3.2Ghz-3.4Ghz is a risky bet, but when the new SB750 + 790FX/GX motherboards come out, I think the Phenoms will hit it. At 3.4 you better WC it though. Oh, and if you're wondering, your 6400+ handles games JUST fine. Get a Rad 4850- 50% performance increase, spend much less than a Phenom. This post has been edited by X.E.D: Jul 5 2008, 05:21 PM |

for high TDP CPU, we need at least 4 phase power design with cooling (like those with heatpipe). Without that may cause overheating n the power caps will burst n the mainboard will die.

However, if you can wait, 790GX is going to pop up soon. It's like AMD's P45- easier and better (also more stable) overclocks, able to do Crossfire, and also should be cheaper than most 790FX boards. 790GX is slated to start from RM400. |

man, i knew it's way too early to purchase the mobo with SB600 on it...
yea, it can't oc phenom well enuff n my target for phenom if oc'ing is around 3.4 - 3.5GHz. yea, u're quite rite guys, my current 6400+ is damn powerful enuff for games d imo. the only thing that's making the system slower is my gc now. instead of buying 4850, i'll jz cf my 3870 with another 1,lol |
