I read a few cases of this kind of situation. But, somehow PS3 have some kind of recovery system incase of power black-out during updating. So, no need to worry. I don't think so as I remembered snipersnake posted before that his colleague had this situation and his PS3 was totally dead, couldn't even power up and had to send to SG service center for repair and had to pay SG30 for that.

Huhu.. really? then dominiqueX must be lucky that day, coz his PS3 was updating till 43% when electric power black-out. Link: http://bincang.net/forum/showthread.php?p=...267#post1937267Ok, if you really notice during the update process :- Step 1 PS3 will copy/download the firmware from the server into the internal HDD (you can see the progress bar) then it'll reboot the PS3 and ask you to accept the agreement. Step 2 It'll start flashing the firmware from the HDD into the NAND chip of the PS3 until 100%. So during the first step if you have an electrical blackout and when you get back your electricity, PS3 will copy/download again the firmware from the server as nothing was written or flash on the NAND chip. Therefore you are safe but if the blackout occurs during the second step then you're really fcuked up as the NAND flash has already been erased and the firmware was not being written 100% into it. This concept is similar to PSP. Don't believe me? You can try it but I won't hold any responsibility if you damage your PS3

Yeah, high possibility that dominiqueX was still in updating process in Step 1. Sony should have somekind of backup battery installed inside.

My friend's PS3 has stalled after downloading the 2.36 fw (but before installing) and encountered a black screen. It couldt be started after he force-reset the PS3. After googling around, the solution is by switching off the PS3 using the power button on the rear of the unit, and unplugged it from the socket for 3-5mins. Luckily it worked. However I think this is only for the pre-flashing stage. No harm trying though.

Is it possible to back up from the PS3 any demos, add-ons, games, etc that you've gotten from PSN?
Eg. Abu downloads Tekken: Dark Resurrection straight onto his PS3. Can he somehow back up the file to a hard disk, USB drive or networked computer?

Just upgrade my PS3 40GB version HDD to Seagate Momentum 160GB SATA 5400rpm.
The upgrade process was quite simple but my batch of PS3 40GB version is different from the online PS3 FAQ or the user manual. The HDD casing is much easier to take out compare to my other friend's PS3 80GB version. Just take out the Blue screw and pull the handle, the HDD will pop out by itself.
However, after I install a new HDD, the PS3 menu never come out, there is a message ask me to insert any Media Storage containing PS3 software 2.36 or later.
Lucky I manage to download the version 2.36 into my USB Thumb Drive and the console able to detect it. The software upgrade process took about 10 minutes to complete.
Now my PS3 got 149GB ... later tonight will upgrade to version 2.40.

Mine is 80GB version, I already upgraded the HDD. It's exactly the same as what you're describing. Take out the blue screw, pull the handle, the HDD will pop out by itself.

TS, I got a tip to share it's recommended to update using the thumbdrive rather than wirelessly because it may cost data loss and corrupt the system, especially for major updates like the 2.40. my system is a victim of this and I'm trying my best to repair it now. just sharing the tip so that nobody kena the same thing as me
