i m not yet d40/d40x user . now using d50 6mp

but i m looking on buying one dis coming year end.

i mainly wil use d camera to shoot family group photos during chinese new year, and print 12' x 18' size.

*

no...filter is screwed in front of lens, lens hood to prevent direct sunlight on lens (avoid glare) no direct connection smile.gif

aceejay,
no...a new 55-200mm VR is only RM850+

Mr. Shiney,
d40 and 350d have their pros and cons..d40 is a much newer camera so it has better pictures...but the drawback is that d40 don have internal af motor on the body...

Xannava,
i tot you just got your s5/s3 a few months back why now wanna change again??

but after read the review at front page,

it sounds like d40x only :

1) 6MP to 10MP, but same sensor size.
2) flash sync reduce from 1/500 to 1/200, that's alot right ? does it affect external flash as well ?
3) from 2.5 fps to 3fps
4) ISO lowest 100, any significant different ?

but the price difference = around RM500 sweat.gif

The reason that a lens with a big maximum aperture is referred to as fast is that it lets more light in and therefore you can use faster shutter speeds even when there might not be much light around. icon_rolleyes.gif

Lower f-stop lets you use shorter shutter time while maintining the same exposure.

Already have a 50mm 1.8D for portrait/night shots. I don't think I can appreciate the 17-55 yet... VR is probably more useful to me atm. 17-55 isnt that much more expensive over the 18-200 here in Aus, but then again the 18-200 here is already overpriced compared to Msia.

buy a prosumer zoom or something then... wide to 400mm+ tele the only lens you'll ever need.

the 18-135 is not as good as you think. Both are all-plastic kit lenses but the 18-135 has more distortion and purple fringing. Extra tele range is pointless without VR unless you intend on using it exclusively with a tripod. It's a cheap zoom, you pay for what you get.

55-200 DX sensor = 88( 55*1.6) to 320 (200*1.6) 35mm format whre 1.6 is nokin crop factor

Nikon DX is 1.5, 1.6 is Canon.

The effective focal length of a lens depends on the crop factor of the camera sensor.
For example Sigma 12-24mm EX lens:
- when use on full frame DSLR, you'll have the same focal length of 12mm - 24mm.
- when use on Nikon's camera, you'll have to multiply with the crop factor of 1.5, you'll have 18mm - 36mm focal length
- when use on Canon's camera, you'll have to multiply with 1.6, you'll have 19.2mm - 38.4mm.

The table below that shows the equivalent lens sizes for different crop factors. The column on the left is the lens focal length on a full frame camera.
user posted image

Full frame - Canon 5D/1D MkIII, Nikon D3
1.3x - Canon EOS 1D/1D MkIIN
1.5x - Nikon D40/D50/D70/D70s/D80/D200/D300/D2XD2Hs, Minolta 7D/Fuji S3 Pro, Pentax *istDS/K100D/K110D/K10D
1.6x - Canon EOS 300D/400D/20D/30D/40D
2.0x - Olympus E-400/E-500/E-300/E-1

no...
it's not the focal length that is multiplied....
but...
the field of view is equivalent to the multiplied focal length...
this means...if using a 70-200mm on a full frame would get u more picture than using it with dx sensor...

20D? Why 20D?! Seriously, if I could afford to start all over again I'd go for a 5D + 24-105L... the moment you look through the viewfinder you're hooked... drool.gif brows.gif

The ML-L3 remote is useful not just for self portraits but long exposure as well especially if you have a lousy tripod... so your hands don't shake the camera when you press the shutter. Only downside is you can't use bulb exposure with the IR remote unlike the wired remotes doh.gif

BTW, once you get a D50 or 70 you will find that the D40 sucks... you'll take a long time to get used to the lack of direct controls and top LCD. D50 should be dirt cheap now. D40 will take better pictures with less hassle but once you understand how to use an SLR you'll find the D50 is more convenient.

Can or cant autofocus with D40 depends on what lens loh, if its Nikkor AF-S or Sigma HSM lenses, then no problem pairing with D40 at all. If not, then you'll have to manual focus loh. If can find a good condition D50 or D70 or D70s, go get them if you dun mind owning a used unit. laugh.gif

Sorry, never have any experiences on a used unit. Try buy an used unit from camera shop, usually they'll give you few months warranty on it. Of course D40 can auto focus with the kit lens, check the first page of this thread to see what lenses can autofocus with D40/40x. icon_rolleyes.gif

Don't get Olympus... four thirds sucks tongue.gif

D200/300 gives different results compared to D40... from experience unless you are confident in playing around with the settings to achive a desired effect it will give you very plain/bland pictures with default settings. D40 will give more vivid photos out of the box without the need for as much tweaking.

I bought mine here in Australia so my prices aren't really relevant I think... if you convert the prices it's a lot more expensive here. The place where I work sells digital cameras and stuff as part of their range but they don't really carry much high end equipment. I managed to get them to order in the 190XPROB so I paid cost (approx. AUD$190) and used it with a lousy head until I found the 488RC0 (~$150), exchange rate is pretty high right now so all up it was around RM1k. I had a choice between the RC0/RC2/RC4 but RC2 has no spirit levels and RC4 is too big.

I was deciding between flash and head as well, but Nikon stuff is heavily overpriced here so I might hold out until Feb when I'm in KL and get a SB-800 then.

guys, i did something stupid,

while unmount the kit-lens from the body, i accidentally touch a spring hinge on the kit-lens that the camera used it to adjust the lens aperture..i didnt know it was for aperture adjusting until i touch it and notice the lens aperture opened wider..

is there any after effect to my kit-lens ?

Vladimir's shop is at Penang.

guys, when i change the shooting mode to 2-seconds Self-Timer, after i took a shot, it will automatically changed to single shot mode, and i need to go thru many menus and set the shooting mode again..

any remedy for that ?

thanks...

Set func key to change shooting mode... not exactly a fix but it makes it easier to change back to timer. icon_rolleyes.gif

*poison start*
if u plan to do off shoe flash...
u can take a look at r1c1....
u get 2 remote flash n 1 commander...
but the flash cannot mount on shoe la...
=)...
also since u already have sb600...
with r1c1 u get 2 extra flashes and 1 commander + sb600...u get do a studio lighting setup strobist style!
after all the r1c1 is only a few hundred bucks more than the sb800...=)

Eh, was also wondering. Can I get the D40 body only? If possible I want the D40 + AF-S DX VR 18-200mm. Don't want the kit lens. I've been wanting a DSLR for a long, long time. Few more months to go! =D

Edited: Sorry, I want the AF-S DX VR 55-200mm lens, not the 18-200mm. If D40 + kit + AF-S DX VR 55-200mm around how much eh?

A new D40 kit should be around RM1.8k~1.9k now and the Nikkor 55-200mm VR will be about RM800. If you are lucky, you might be able to get it around RM2.5k ~2.6k with those free goodies! Wait another weeks or two when D300 is hot on sales, the price of other models will most probably go down a bit. icon_rolleyes.gif

Nikon only got 2 lens in white, the 70-200mmVR f/2.8 and the 28-70mm f/2.8! When you are using these lens, from far, you will look like as if you are using Canon system! icon_rolleyes.gif

Ask whoever who bought camera from there before for the email address or tel. no. Or ask those who bought DSLR from the shop before to go with you when you buy the camera so they can help you bargain with the sales person there! icon_rolleyes.gif

Try ask some forumers in here to accompany with you, I'm sure they'll be gladly to help you to buy your new camera, if you treat them yum cha after that! laugh.gif
My advice is try go survey some camera shops that is recommended by forumers in here, chat with the sales person there, ask whatever questions you dunno, see how's their customer service and the buy from the shops that you have the best service. Service always come first! icon_rolleyes.gif

In Sarawak at the moment. Don't know where to get good deals here. J.One seems famous. Will arrive in KL this saturday and go straight to Amcorp mall to get my D40. At the campus too busy to go online and crappy internet connection sleep.gif' Is there anything else worth getting if my budget is RM2.5K?

50mm f/1.8 almost RM400 right? Can it autofocus with the D40? And can someone tell me more about it. Still new to figuring lenses out. Thanks biggrin.gif

Guys is it worth it to go straight for the D80? I've no basic at all. Wanting to get my first DSLR. But the price for the D80 is quite near to my RM3k budget. Wondering if I'll regret getting the D40 over the D80. Won't get any chance to upgrade the dslr once I get it at least until a few years.

Because it's a prime lens thus the sharpness it two thumbs up yet the price make it even more interesting. smile.gif

If u asked me, if u looking for ur 1st DSLR and learning photography, trust me, the D40 is a good cam to start with. I think u try getting 2nd hand units of it, as there are plenty of users are selling it. But i must say photography using a DSLR is expensive, and be prepare to folk alot of money to carve ur satisfaction.

The best bang for buck to start DSLR photography is using D40 + Kit lens + 55-200VR, which u can get for less than 3k, even for a new set. smile.gif

ohh.. i see, is it good for shooting landscape scenery ?

which lens u think a should person upgrade / complement the kit lens ? mainly for shooting landscape..

and one more question here, since the focus ring and the filter mounting of the d40 kit lens is bound together, i was wondering if i put a large filter/converter, for example a wide angle converter,
will it stress the autofocus motor inside more since it is heavier and harder to spin ?

for 50mm F1.8 is very suitable for portraiture photography....
for scenery or landscape better use wider lense such as D40/x kit lense or d70/s kit lense (18mm-70mm /f3.5-4.5) smile.gif

peace !!! icon_rolleyes.gif

to me i'd go d80 straight...will be expensive at first but u can save more later....
i got my d40 for less than a year n i feel the need to upgrade d....so i upgraded....=)

ez....to continue the answer....it's also fast...f1.8....
flexible...the angle of view is equivalent to those of human eyes when used on film though...
and most importantly...it's cheap!
DIRT cheap!

u need the 12-24 f4 to complement ur kit lens on the wide angle side...btw the 12-24 goes for 3k+....
if u dun wanna spend so much...the kit lens has enuff wideangle for normal usage...=)

I already posted a brief comparison of D80 with D40/40x in D80 thread, can I post it in here again! drool.gif
I hope you all dun mind ya! laugh.gif

D40/40x = smaller body (suitable for smaller hand user), 148 g lighter than D80, only can autofocus with Nikkor AF-S lenses and Sigma HSM lenses (limited lenses to choose from if you only want AF and usually more superior and expensive lenses due to built-in focus motor in lenses), suitable for hobbyist that's not keen into having a lot of lenses to change or to choose from. laugh.gif
Below is the list of most used lenses compatible with D40
Wide-angle lenses = AF-S Nikkor 12-24mm, Sigma 10-20mm HSM
Macro lenses = AF-S Nikkor 105mm VR, Sigma 150mm HSM
Normal range fast lenses (f/2.8) = AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm, Sigma 18-50mm HSM
Prime lenses = Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM
Most preferred lenses to bundle with D40 = Nikkor 18-200mm VR, Sigma 18-200mm OS, Nikkor 18-55mm + 55-200mm VR
p/s: D40/40x also can use other non AF-S or HSM lenses, but cannot autofocus, you'll have to manually tweak the focus ring to focus! sweat.gif
D40/40x user = entry level body but bundle with mostly superior lenses! thumbup.gif

D80 = bigger body, heavier, have flash commander mode, have two mode dials, no restriction on lenses (this is the cause of never-ending buying list tongue.gif ), suitable for hobbyist that can have unlimited lenses for upgrade. brows.gif
Below is the list of most discussed or most used lenses for D80:
Wide-angle lenses = Nikkor 12-24, Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24
Macro lenses = Nikkor 60mm, 105mm VR, Sigma 70mm, 105mm, 150mm, Tamron 90mm, 180mm, Tokina 100mm
Normal range fast lenses (f/2.8) = Nikkor 17-55mm, Sigma 18-50mm, Tamron 17-50mm, Tokina 16-50mm
Prime lenses = Nikkor 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.8 & f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8 & f/1.4, Sigma 30mm f/1.4

Just my 2 cents! icon_rolleyes.gif

Yea serious, most shops in Sungai Wang now offering 1650 for the Nikon D40 kit + 2gb + Bag + tripod.... The 90 anniversary pack

But i think some shops might be giving the cheap triangle bag...So beware

The shop i went is called Tarita Photo Av Trading @ Ground Flour... You guys can find the guy named Kent

Very friendly and helpful. His sets' are all original nikon malaysia set...

I also got a 55-200 vr for 800 tongue.gif great price they offer there.

So good luck guys biggrin.gif

Possible, perhaps a D90 or a D80 replacement. But for me an upgrade to D80 should be sufficent for my lvl. So, any early takers for my d40?? brows.gif

I got my cam through Tarita, the prices for the the cam itself are allright but after you get the cam they'll try all kinds of funny tricks to sell you heavily marked up accessories.

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOTTT BUY ANY ACCESSORIES FROM TARITA THEY MARK IT UP BY LIKE 100%.

lol.. after I bought my 40x from them the fella tried to sell me a Cokin UV filter for the kit lens for around RM150. What he did was he tried to cover the price on the tag telling me to "trust him it's a huge discount". When I tried to tell him that I could get a Hoya filter for less he tried to convince me that Cokin was better than Hoya. Later I managed to peek at the price tag for the Cokin and it was marked at around RM260.

I paid RM2430 for the kit + Nikon branded SLR bag + Toshiba 2GB about 4 months ago. Some shops will try to tell you that the bag if sold by itself is worth RM160, I can assure you that the cost price for the bag is less than RM40. Just buy the camera from them and walk out.

1 i dont know about j-one,but yl for me(minus).....btw,i already ask tarita, they only manage to offer at rm1700 lowest...and for all of u,nikon d40 kit promotion right now doesnt come with free tripod.and 1 more thing, hoya uv lens can get at rm50

sometime, customer also have to be clever.

maybe some of the shop offer rm1650 for the whole package but after u came back they just told u no more stock.another situation is they just increase abit of the price or selling same price but "chop" u on others accessories.i think some1 face this b4 rite?

Have your money ready and go bargain at the shop. Once you get your budget price or cheaper, just get it without adding anything in, as camera are pretty much stick to the market's price while the price for accessories can be varies a whole lot! Those shops usually chop you off at these! Can you imagine that I can get a Keep 62mm UV filter at RM20 while its retail price is at RM88! sweat.gif

nikon already mention that the promotion already end by 28 november and after that the promotion package is no longer come with nikon 90th annivesary tripod.

unless the shop is good enough to bundle the nikon 90th annivesary tripod as well and selling cheap price for the package

to all others,

1. i dont play tricks here,u can always call nikon malaysia

2. i think i know well with the lastest update with the promotion

fuking cheebai... brought my cam to a company dinner earlier and some of my colleagues insisted they wanted to 'pinjam' my cam to take some photos, freaking got oil over my cam from handling finger food and there's a scratch down the middle of the screen of my 1 week old SB-600. vmad.gif vmad.gif vmad.gif vmad.gif vmad.gif

The pics they took turned out like shit also, I set it to shutter priority told them to leave it at 1/30 where TTL will usually do it's job and fill nicely but some fella tried to act damn smart and used aperture priority, turned my flash comp upwards and fired like 4 shots in a row. Then he tried to take a pic of a neon sign without a flash and told me he was "gonna show me how I should use my D40" by turning up exposure comp to +1 in Av and then acting suprised when the pic came out blur.

Mahai... I fuking hate noobs who try to act smart.

Yeah dude there's a scratch right down the middle on the LCD of the SB-600. Don't know how but they also managed to leave a mark on my battery door... wtf. mad.gif Frickin hell I leave my cam with someone for 15 mins and it gets trashed up. This particular fella who was messing around with the settings apparently has a 40D, obviously he has no idea how Nikon TTL works. This is one of the reasons why I'm not convinced about getting a D300; there will be times you need to hand other people your camera unless you only want to take shots of others but not yourself and most people who think they know a lot won't treat your things with much respect.

On another topic, somehow I managed to get some vignetting with the lens hood on the 18-200 this arvo at 75mm... weird. hmm.gif

In a lot of situations you can't really do that. It's odd enough carrying an SLR around looking like the paparazi in a social event packed full of people, unless you care carry around a tripod and set it up you won't be in any of the pictures you take. Another thing which I'm really pissed off about is since this fella cranked up the exposure and flash comp all the pics look like crap... he probably thought that he needed to increase flash power for bounce flash. doh.gif

Maybe next time I'm just gonna bring the compact instead.

the platform in your last pic can be taken out, screw to ur d40, and put it back to the tripod,
this is convenient when u wan switching between handheld and tripod..
