I have work to do lar if not I'd wait for a better time to go HK.

No lar from daily video's of CNBC I can see kowloon from 尖沙嘴。 Thats why I thought its really bad lor.

HK all the time air polluted, the pollution mainly come from Mainland, I think during CNY is better already 'coz factory are having holiday.

尖沙嘴 is already in Kowloon, don't understand what you meant "can see Kowloon from 尖沙嘴"..

QUOTE(mad-d0g @ Feb 1 2008, 11:06 AM)
hm...i can hardly tell it's polluted. maybe because it's cold nowadays. but mayb in the summer then i can judge  tongue.gif

I always think summer is better.. the most serious is spring getting to summer, or summer getting to autumn when air movement is not very active..

Victoria Harbour is a harbour, you can either look at Tsim Sha Tsui from Central/Wanchai/Causeway Bay or vice versa, I guess people seldom look at Tsim Sha Tsui from Victoria Harbour unless they are riding on a boat/ferry.

I don't feel it's VERY polluated in HK, compare with Shanghai, HK air pollution is not that serious indeed.

Yeah guess so some people say that Shang Hai is worse, well I still hope the PRC gov improve on the pollution problem, its driving expats away.
*
can't stop, it will only get worse 'coz it's being a factory for the whole world. Can you live without using any product which is made in China?

It won't drive expats away if they offer good salary. Does air pollution drive tourists away from HK? I don't think so. Only if there is enough attraction, tourists still come. Same for the expats.

HK is working to minimise air pollution locally, at least most people in HK take bus/MTR for transportation, better than countries like Indonesia & M'sia everyone drives own car out which will produce more carbon dioxide to the air...

Hi Northasian,
I just came back from HK on a short trip from the 24thJan to the 28th. I have been following through this forum before my trip. Thanks a lot for all the valuable info. It helps a lot. It's my 3rd time in HK but 1st time on my own free n easy. Previous 2 times were on full guided tours. I really enjoyed my trip this time round. HK is really a very nice place and I cant wait to go there again.

Ahh well I hope the more factories are being built in other places of China instead of the peal delta river, cos 1/3 of china's GDP is there. If any natural dissater happens there then china's economy will have a problem.

Hmm guess so....

THats so true though we do not have good public transport. cry.gif

Factories gather in Pearl River Delta area becoz most of them are runned and owned by HKers, so they gotta choose a place close to HK in order to manage. There are factories in other provinces as well, like Yiwu & Wuhan are well developed industrial area. In Pearl River Delta, the possibility of occuring natural disaster is slim, it's not located in the volcano/earthquarke active area, the most serious one is typhoon only.

That's why KL also got the hazzy days as well, not only HK.

northasian,

thanks for updating the 1st page over and over again. I copy and printed out everything over my trip in HK. I was there from 25 - 28 tongue.gif soooo cooolllddddd but throughly enjoyed the trip and your guide helped alot in terms of where to go for shopping & food hunting smile.gif

it was my 1st winter and I'm thinking of going again during winter next time it makes walking, shopping so much fun and the fashion everyone is wearing...goodness! envy-lah wish can wear that in msia biggrin.gif

oh yah, not to forget the food is absolutely great just a tad bit expensive but hard to compare coz msia rental is not so high compare to hk. As for polution, dont know why i feel the weather is really very good and clean dont feel poluted at all but thats me. crisp, fresh and nice kl is worst. maybe more so when i work in kl day in day out ewww.

the only thing that i didnt really enjoy is the 'hostel' that i stayed in but guess begger cant be choosers lah.

just too bad didnt manage to see the big buddha due to the weather so m thinking to drop by again sometime during spring or autumn to see the peak and big buddha. thanks again for the great guide really appreciate your effort in putting it up.

Hi Ravenz,

Thanks for your compliments~ notworthy.gif and glad to hear you enjoyed your stay in HK~ biggrin.gif You're lucky to have a cold winter here this year 'coz in recent years, our winter was not this cold due to global warming... (I remember some ppl did wear short sleeves t-shirts during last CNY!!)

Things in HK are getting expensive nowadays 'coz of good economy. Can't compare with M'sia 'coz different living standard...

Which hostel you stayed? Really very bad? Share here as a reference to all forumers..

Langham Place in MK.

In HK you got a lot of chance to walk outside actually.. shopping malls in HK are not as big as those in KL, you have to skip to different malls in 1 day. Also, you pay so much to travel outside, you just want to see something which you might also have seen in your home country???? If I were you, I'd rather enjoy the cold weather which I cannot enjoy in my home country, and walk outdoor to see & feel the local scene & life.

Hi,

Booked via hostelworld.com and went for Travellers Friendship. On our 1st night there they put us in a twin bedroom which is not what I have booked for as it was late when I reached (abt 10pm) and we 'forgot' that we booked for a double bed room (too hungry to remember) therefore we didnt ask for the change until the next morning as we only realise the mistake sometime after midnight when we are rested.

In the morning once we inform them, they moved us to Fortunate Hostel in Chung King Mansion, for your info, USA Hostel, New Garden Hostel, Traveller's Friendship and another 2 or 3 more hostel is under this group as well. So the place you book might not be the hostel you will get end of the day. They charged us the price for a double bed but when we reached, they pretended that we booked for twin bed (which is a cheaper option) and thank god, we bring our reservation slip which we have printed prior before together with the price listed on it, coz when we inform them, they wanted to charge us extra for the 'upgrade' to double bed. Water heater have a certain time of opening hour which is very short actually more like a 30 seconds opening.

There is alot of african nations around the Mirador and Chung King Mansion area, at times its scary walking around there. I'm not sure how safe it is but glad to see the police around especially after 11 pm onwards and that makes me feel better and safer walking in and out of the building area.

Haha.. if you book hostel/guesthouses around that area (Chung King Mansion and Mirador Building), surely there are a lot of African/Indian/Pakistani around and always ask you to eat curry upstair... -__-||| Next time book budget hotel around Mongkok/Yau Ma Tei would be better...

Dong Guan is even colder than HK... HK's downtown is about 10-14'c and 2-3'c lower for the New Territories/Outlying island/High attitude area. Yep I am taking care ga la, thanks~~ biggrin.gif

juz afraid it might be too cold... brrrr....
besides tat, i still really look forward to my trip..

btw, GONG XI FA CAI to all of u !!

Too cold than wear more clothes la... In outdoor, I suggest you to wear 1 turtle neck long sleeves inside + 1 sweater outside + 1 long thick coat/jacket (down jacket would be better) + 1 wool/acrylic scarf. Better wear sneaker instead of ballet flats or your feet feel very cold then your body will feel cold as well... Main point to keep your whole body warm is to keep your neck and feet warm.

Kung Hei Fat Choi to you too, cheers!!

Hi hi, it been long time i didn't post something here.

First of all thanks northasian thumbup.gif for the information that you have update in first page and also via posting. I found this information very usefull as I just went there last week. I had been to many place that you had mention. For sure I skip alot of troble to seek for help regarding to visit HK.

First of all let me mention about my trip. I went there on Air Asia via Macau to HK on 27th till 1st of feb. What I found out about this trip that I miss the most... (the weather) yeah I know is cold as it sometime 7c the lowest with minor rain, but this is what Malaysia don't have. I really enjoy it....

Second I want to mention regarding to this trip is place to stay. I would highly recon people to stay at http://www.dragonhostel.com/. Not to say that I promote this hostel but what to say is this hostel is clean and free from african and indian that ask you to eat (Kari) hehehe. The person who incharge of the hostel is very helpfull on provide information to where we need to go and so on. The price is far most resonable to me as RM50 per night per person. I and my friend make the booking via internet the day before we arrive and yet still get room to stay. We stay at 5 people room and just need to pay RM250 per night per room. The price is very resonable toward what we get from there. Pro of the hostel is that there is 3 old laptop for guess to access internet for free with budget traveller need because we need to seek for information regarding to place to stay. Then the place is just 2 street away from Mong Kok MTR stations. WOw this is bonus as MTR is what a budget travel need to travel in HK. If people dare to take bus don't worry the bus stop is just on the ground floor. And also the hostel is near to Mong Kok shopping area so people would not worry about shopping or food. Cons of this hostel is that the room is small but as what I say what we pay is what we get. Since we just need a place to stay and not enjoy the room, we can spend more on shopping and foods.. Another this is the traffic poluttion. If you stay there you need to enjoy the sound of the car or bus that move below. For me it nothing as in KL I also stay at place where I hear them in the morning.

*Pictures regarding to the hostel will be post up in next time as I didn't bring out my thumb drive. So happy stay in HK for future traveller to HK.

Incase there is question on my trip do post up and ask me I will try my best to answer. Once again thanks for NORTHASIAN rclxm9.gif

There are 2 ferry terminals for Macau ferry in HK. The other one is in Sheung Wan.

The nearest hotel to the Tsim Sha Tsui ferry terminal is Royal Pacific Hotel and Towers. Search its website online please. All hotels in HK can be booked online.

Check HK Observatory website for weather forecast, I am not a weather specialist... I've said thousands of times here that weather in HK no longer can be predicted due to global warming.
