Hi ppl,

Do you guys have any travel agents to recommend? I am planning to treat my parents to Macau and Hong KOng in July for their anniversary. Currently I am in SIngapore, so I cant personally visit the travel agents in KL. Would appreaciate if they are able to aliase with me via emails.

Just two adults, departing in July 2008. Preferably Friday to Monday. About 4 days 3 nights, with sight seeing and all inclusive (Meals, accommodation & air flights).

Thanks

Hi northasian,

Glad to meet you here that you are great helping Malaysian tourist to HK...

I'm going to Hong Kong next week, and I will be getting there by AirAsia to Macau. I will stay 4 nights in HK, and will spend my last night at Macau. Total trip will be 6 days 5 nights trip. This is my 1st time to HK.

I've some questions that i wish to get advice from you.

1. I stay in Stanford Hotel, Soy Street Mongkok. Will this hotel be convenient to get around day & night? Any great food to eat there?

2. Will the time be very pack for me? Which I have to rush to here and there to cover most of the place of interest?

3. Should I buy Octopus Card since I'm just being in HK for few days? Can I buy single journey ticket at counter? Or I should get myself a Octopus Loan Card?

4. I've checked the weather forecast from http://www.hko.gov.hk/contente.htm I'm not sure if it's cold, as I'm not that familiar with it... It's approximately 14 - 17 oC. What should I bring along? Light jacket will do? Is the weather same as it's in Genting Highlands?

Please advice.
Thank you very much.

This hotel is good for both location and quality with reasonable price. Nearest MTR station is Jordan, approx. 5-10mins walk.

Not sure with that website, but I did heard of it before. Why don't you just email the hotel to check the rate first?

Hi WhizzWork, nice to meet you too. Here you go the answers :

1. As long as it's in the city, it's convenient to get around, especially in Mongkok/Yau Ma Tei/Tsim Sha Tsui area. All places in HK aren't big, you can walk to the nearest MTR station on foot in minutes. Food, as I've said before in this thread, people will NOT eat near the hotel they stay every day and night. HK is small, try out restaurants in different places, or just eat along the journey you make that day. See any restaurants that interest you, why not just give it a try? This is the fun of free'n easy trip!!

2. 5 days in HK is not that rush indeed. It's fair enough for you to covering most tourists' must-go places.

3. Yes, an Octopus Card is a must for traveller I think. It's much much more convenient (no need to spare coins in your purse) and cheaper when you take the MTR (higher fare for single journel ticket sold from the machine). There is no Octopus Loan Card in HK, but we got Tourist Octopus Card which offer a free-unlimited rides on MTR for a period of time. Please check its website on #1 for details.

4. Weather is getting a bit warmer this week, but I heard another cold air will come next week.. It's been a very long time ago when I visited Genting Highland so I can't remember the weather there. Have you been to Cameron Highland? I think 17'c is close to the temp. on Cameron Highland, but 14'c is even colder (during early morning & night time). Got some long sleeves, turtle neck, sweater, scarf would be better.

Cheers, have a happy planning~

Thanks for the answer. i just converted HK100 for Rm 41.70. Im going to hk this thursday. havent really made much planning yet. now i feel kinda rushing. dang!

BTW, is it more worth it to buy the octopus or get the loan one? Cause from what I can see is that if I purchase it, I get 3 days free ride on the MRT.

When I 1st saw you guys said "loan" octopus card, I was confused and thought there is no loan card in HK. After I read thru the octopus website, finally I know all of you talked about the loan octopus card is actually the one almost everyone is using in our daily life here!!! (Never thought of it is called a loan one, haha..)

Ok, to decide which one, sold or loan, it depends on whether you wanna keep the card. As I know, sold cards are those special version with Hello Kitty or any Cartoon character that you cannot return and get the refund. So if you're really fond of the special version you wanna keep it, then go for the "sold" one. If you just treat as a "paying tool" for your trip, just get the loan one (Tourist octopus card is regarded as the "loan" one too 'coz it can be returned and get the refund of its remaining value).

I hope I've made it clear here. Cheers~

Thanks. Anyway, I read the website more thoroughly and found out that for the 3 days free ride, the card is alot more expensive. So I think I will just get the normal loan one.

Btw, I will be traveling alone, anyone wanna meet up over there?

That tourist octopus card with 3 days free rides is more expensive 'coz it includes single or round-trip Airport Express Railway.

but the 3 days unlimited MTR rides is only for selected routes

* MTR - Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Island, Tung Chung, Tseung Kwan O and Disneyland Resort lines only.

plz read the conditions in the bottom of the page at http://www.octopuscards.com/consumer/help/...ts/en/index.jsp

can anyone plz confirm this statement? if confirmed for selected lines, then the tourist octopus is not so cheap than expected.

Added on February 21, 2008, 1:29 amAnyone here has try Air Asia Travel Packages to Macau/Hong Kong which included return flight and hotel stay? I see it very attractive with only RM2000+ for 4D3N for a 2 person trip. plz give comment ...

Yes the free rides are restricted on those underground rail routes only. It will be value for money if you travel a lot, like if you stay in Mongkok, and plan to visit Disneyland, Ocean Park, Tung Chung and some misc. spots on HK Island on the 1st 3 days, then you can be benefit from it, coz the fare for travel between Kowloon & HK Island & Lantau Island (trans harbour routes) is expensive, around HKD10-16 per ride.

You've bought the MH ticket already, why bother still ask if it's expensive or not? If people say yes you get it too expensive, will you refund your MH ticket and get the AirAsia instead? I personally think people shouldn't compare MH with AirAsia 'coz they are in different catagory. MH is direct flight with normal airline service (ie. free meals, seat assignment, special meal request..etc.) while AirAsia arrive in Macau without normal airline service, you can't compare them on the price only. You should add the Macau ferry price on the AirAsia ticket as well, which would be approx. HKD2xx-300 round-trip.

Added on February 22, 2008, 8:54 pmAfter reading so much i found Mong Kok will be a good shopping distination.

You're welcome.

Yep, Mongkok is suitable for majority of tourists and even general local people 'coz price range is generally moderate, while Tsim Sha Tsui, Central & Causeway Bay are more for the high-end market.

Mid Sep would have some late-summer sale, and yep shops would start selling new arrival of Autumn/Winter items at that time.

Air Asia is a non direct flight so even with price of RM480 you would need to add on the ferry of RM150~RM180 it will bring you over to RM630. Just to compare price you are paying away of the different of RM170~RM150.

The price is just what you pay for the trip but compare for other factor like direct flight, transfer fees, time and enegy that you need for travel just from Macau to HK would you say worth it for the price of RM170?

For people who is mean to go to HK only I would say Mas offer is good as people go streight to HK. For people who want to travel both point Air Asia is good.

So end up it up to people to decide where and what they want to pay for.
