Its still another 6 days till the release. What you're seeing on that link is just the RC, not the release version

2 more days. based on a certain article i've read, there's pros and cons to download the release candidate. cons are... it's not the final release and there "could" be bugs and all. pros are... download now, and avoid all the heavy traffic or server crash or whatever on the release date... especially to those who's updating instead of dloading the iso. the last time i was downloading Feisty Fawn 7.04, the server crashed.

im using the rc version now, and so far there's not a single problem that i've face... i say it's as good as the final version.

Well, there is always a torrent file provided so you could download the iso image via your bittorent client instead of downloading it directly from the file server.

im not sure what kernel it is... but ubuntu can run mostly on all p4 comps, and im sure of that biggrin.gif . what's ur comp spec? if it's too low, u can try out xubuntu, which minus the fancy effects but still retain the usability of ubuntu.

anyways, to all who freshly install ubuntu 7.10 from iso cds dun forget to "sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager" rclxms.gif

Hi All,

I've run Gutsy for more than 12 hrs now... It's definitely stable like the previous feisty... In this version now it has "deskbar applet" it is similar to spotlight (mac os x) and searchlight in Vista included... fast user switching like the other 2 os'... renamed gaim to pidgin... support for the new 8k series nvidia and the 2k series ati... firefox 2.0.0.7 included...

My problem during the initial stage was that installation was unsuccessful, the disk couldn't copy 2 files onto the partition (one of them is grub)... later rerun the live cd again and did the same thing but this time I used the disk partitioner to delete the partition making it to freespace and then reformat again to ext3... finally all the files were copied onto the hdd and now everything's running sweetly on my rig...

I'll post more post-installation comments as the hour progress, regards

Fa'iq

after upgrading, i can't activate the the compiz, which i was running happily when i was back using feisty fawn. DANG!

any ideas?

*************************************************************************************************

Damn, my ATI 9550 card is blacklisted.

According to here, http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Hardware/Blacklist

Ignoring the blacklist

Some times you want to start compiz-manager even though compiz-manager blacklists it, this is easy enough:

QUOTE
SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz-manager

Or in the case of distributions that name the script 'compiz':

QUOTE
SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz

You can also store this value, where it is depends on your distribution, usually it is a matter of putting

QUOTE
SKIP_CHECKS=yes

in ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager .

But where do it find ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager?
Where is it located?

I always choose Aussie mirrors. They're pretty fast on my side, maxed out my connection speed.

~/ means path to your home directory.

So it should be in /home/yourusername/.config/compiz/compiz-manager . Can't you just "nano ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager" straight away?

Found the solution somewhere in the ubuntu forum.
Finally, my eye candies are back!

Solution:
QUOTE
In order to get the desktop effects to work I first had to install the ATI driver using the Restricted Drivers Manager.

Then I had to install xserver-xgl using the Synaptic Package Manager located under System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager. Just do a search for xserver-xgl in the Synaptic manager to find it.

While you are there you might want to install the compizconfig-settings-manager as well.

After those are installed reboot and then you should be able to select Extra in the Visual Effects tab under System-->Preferences-->Appearance.

To run the CompizConfig Settings Manager, you just run /usr/bin/ccsm
********************************************************************************
The thunder just zapped my NIC and modem. =.=
Luckily I have both spares

Don't use the US website mirror's to download, try using Taiwan.

Thanks for the reply notworthy.gif

but I still don't understand this sudo thing, I never use anything such as sudo in CentOS.
The only su I use in CentOS is su root, but sudo -s can do the same thing in ubuntu.

so is sudo -s the same as su root? because I cant su root in ubuntu, it keeps telling me, my authentication fails.

that is what i call a sudo abuse. or maybe there is a better name.

sudo is used to give certain user, a superuser access to certain command. or program(it is really the same thing)
of course you can use it to replace su.

here is an example
http://www.gratisoft.us/sudo/sample.sudoers

you don't use root in ubuntu, because it is locked.
you can enable it by called sudo passwd, which since passwd didn't receive a parameter, root have no password yet, will create a password for root.

read more here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

now i installed 7.10 on my laptop .. BenQ S41 .. which has 8600GT gfx .. previous ubuntu versions not really compatible with this gfx so i didnt install

i managed to get everything working ... including INTEL PRO WIRELESS AGN .. problem is .. my wifi connection seems to be lagging or more specifically intermittent .. signal strength is good .. when i do a speed test it shows nicely 1200kbps or more .. but when i surf its always lagging ..
it seems the wifi is more comfortable with BURST of signal or consistent signal running all the time .. so when i surf and read and clik i do not always send or receive wifi signal .. but when i do clik it again it takes forever to load a page .. just like 56k ..

any ideas why ???

jeez, just upgraded myself here too, and i'm here *still* wishing that with every ubuntu upgrade it won't screw my screen resolutions, but here you go, so many revisions of Ubuntu and I still have to reconfigure my xserver all the time...

I'm having problem with wired connection. Once my laptop connected to router, everything become slower, opening a jpeg needs 10 - 30 secs, while before that can open almost instantly. Sigh.

Open firefox. Type in about:config at the address bar and type in network.dns.disableIPv6 at the Filter field. Double-click on the appeared Preference Name so that the value will be changed to True. This will not effectively disable ipv6. It's just that this would save you a few seconds when accessing a web page as firefox assumes that the webserver is inside a ipv4 network. Hence, it would only query for a domain<->ipv4 translation.

I have a some problems here, I hope I would be able to get some assistance here.

1st problem, my wireless connection,
I have no problem connecting to my wireless connection if I disable its encryption, but when I uses WPA AES encryption, I failed to connect to it. The network manager applet just shows the connecting animation (where the bottom circle is green while the top circle is grey). I doesn't feel secure if I leave my wireless connection unencrypted. unsure.gif

I am using
3com usb 3rcusb10075 wireless device, )already installed its driver using ndiswrapper with the inf and sys file from the windows firmware that comes with the CD.) and Dlink DI-524 router.

2nd problem, also wireless
even if I disable encryption, my unbuntu is able to get connected, but with no IP address, as I had disable DHCP, the only way I can get my connection to work is to disable encryption and enable DHCP. I try to insert the infor into etc/network/interfaces but after I set my wireless usb which is given the name eth1, then the wireless option will dissappear from the network-manager applet when I restart.

3rd problem, the "beep" sound.
every time, when there are errors, my system unit will unleash a "beep" sound, but my sound card are running without a problem, as I can hear the login music, and mp3 and etc. Some example of when the "beep" sound occurs are :-
i) when I open terminal, then I press backspace on the keyboard when there is nothing to back.
ii) when I entered the wrong user/password during login, then the message to tell me the error will show up right? but when that happens and I re-enter my username and password, each key that I press will result the "beep" effect.

I just don't understand why it doesn't utilize my sound card to beep, but instead uses the motherboard to beep. Is this scenario normal? or there are some configuration that I need to play with.

Thanks for the help.

Well at the moment i'm not facing any problem. smile.gif

All i did was fresh install , managed to get compiz working and oso kiba-dock.

Didn't notice any slow connections on firefox or updating(using lan but haven't tried out wireless yet), btw one thing i notice is the startup is abit faster compared with 7.04

Sounds, screen brightness, wireless, shortcut keys all are working.(Lucky me)

Btw i'm using quite a slow notebook

actually, most of these r not issues with 7.10, but more to do with configurations getting messed up during the 7.04 to 7.10 upgrade process

If your's is working and if u ask bout compiz installation it's in there already all u need is ad the Compiz Config Settings Manager

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

This will add an entry to your System > Preferences menu listed as "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings".

Hi guys!

Finally managed to do a clean dualboot install on my Ferrarri 4000 which comes with the DREADED Broadcom 4318 wifi chipset. It was a nightmare on Feisty, and I was expecting the same with Gutsy - however I was proven wrong. My WEP home network was detected in no time (this was after installing the restricted drivers for the Wifi Chipset). Best way to do that is just connect directly thru Cat5 to a router.

I'm gonna try getting the compiz addon.

Have some questions tho - my boot time is suspiciously longer on Gutsy compared to Feisty, and Firefox takes some time to get websites. Is that anything to do with the IPV6 thingi as mentioned above?

Thanks!

Well basically it should just start Ubuntu from the CD, but that should give you an idea what the problem could be.

I used Grub bootloader by default, but had to manually edit Grub so it's can recognize OSX.

Wat i did was first partition is OSX (20GB)
2nd partition for Ubuntu (10GB)
3rd partition for Ubuntu Swap (512mb)
4th partition for Fat32

In Grub all i did was select osx which is HDD 0,0

you know my old laptop is a 855gm chipset, run beryl(which is a fork of compiz) on it, runs quite well actually, i uninstall it because it is rather distracting.

anyway it is not beautiful, but it is not ugly either.

intel release opensource driver, so it should work. quite well.

Well I should clarify that this solved my problem with Firefox loading pages VERY slowly. So i went on the forums and got this:

Open firefox. Type in about:config at the address bar and type in network.dns.disableIPv6 at the Filter field. Double-click on the appeared Preference Name so that the value will be changed to True. This will not effectively disable ipv6. It's just that this would save you a few seconds when accessing a web page as firefox assumes that the webserver is inside a ipv4 network. Hence, it would only query for a domain<->ipv4 translation.

Advise for AV710 sound card user.
use this asound.state in this site http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3375341
You'll get much better sound. No more noises.

if you experience sound being played "slow motion".
go to terminal type: alsamixer
change the clock to 48000.
that will fix the problem

Anybody tried the Kubuntu version? i have problem mounting HDD with it. It won't mount HDD other than itself and thumbdrive. at first I thought it was because my other HDD was in NTFS, but it has built in NTFS-3g (latest build). Then I found out it won't even mount other linux (ext2 and ext3) partitions also. I wanted to use Amarok on this but my MP3s are in the other linux partition. My HDD can be accessed fine on Ubuntu and even teh Kubuntu partition can be read on Ubuntu.

i'm a Kubuntu user, if you have problems mounting, try this

CODE

sudo mkdir /media/hdb1

sudo mount /dev/hdb1 /media/hdb1

change the hdb1 according to your partition numbering

your other alternative if u dont wanna reinstall XP is get some disk partitioner or manager to create another partition from inside your XP .. then install ubuntu into that new partition .. this is all assuming u have enuff HD space for both OS

in Linux, drivers are installed automagically with the concept of "just works". not like Windows where you have to hunt for drivers. but you have to install restricted drivers yourself

go to System Settings > Advanced tab > Restricted Drivers

those components that are not in use need to be installed, just tick in the box and the restricted drivers will be installed, you need to do this in Administrator mode, just click the button on the bottom right

Yo...
you can use Gparted tu resize the partition. Resize at the end of the partition, very easy. The Ubuntu installer already equip with gparted.

That's pretty hardcore.

anyhow, XINE or GSTREAMER better?

I watch cantonese drama in rmvb, play Axxos in avi/divx, watch virals in 3gp/wmv

Can't hear a thing while playing 3gp file while other formats work flawlessly.

Another question, when u guys login to hotmail.com

Can you access the full version or the classic version?

I'm stuck in classic version. the web page said it supported Firefox 1.5 but im already using 2.0

word in the ubuntu forums is that the gutsy gibbons isnt that good a release yet. Do look up on the fix for laptop hard disks. Ubuntu reads the hard disk unnecessarily and increases the something something count which is not good.

i am having very laggy probs with 7.10 too .. opening and closing progs is very jerky and slow .. the compiz effects are oso extremely jerky
but disabling IPv6 has sort of solved slow connectivity prob ..

currently desktop has been leaving me shadows .. eg. when i open a window and then close that window .. a shadow or outline of that window remains on screen .. sometimes it goes away by itself sometimes it doesnt ...

another thing is the wireless .. sometimes its all perfect when i startup .. sometimes it did not even detect the wireless .. hahahahaaaa .. so i have to reboot .. sometimes more than once in order to detect my wireless .. but once its connected it stable ..

my spec .. BenQ S41
c2d 1.8
ddr2 2gb
8600M GS 256mb gfx

dual boot with MS windows

my spec pentium d 3.2ghz
nvidia 5600 128mb
ddr2 3gb
1 partition for windows and 1 partition for ubuntu.

Running fine with no problem at all, as for wireless dont use the network-manager that comes with gutsy, but install WICD instead, it can manage my wireless network better as should I say that the stock network-manager can't even connect to wpa encrypted AP, and doesn't support static IP.

damn...i almost got cut off from my OSes while installing.
For some reason when i tried to boot it after installing it,it says the partitions doesn't exist ? sweat.gif

went into windows and wiped out all partitions and try it again, then the stupid Grub boots from my 1st HDD which windows is installed, due to the deleted linux partition in the second HDD,it refuses to boot!

gotta try it again today

and whats the 512mb swap for? and is there any changes in GRUB that came with 7.10? like they changed the places where they are installed?

Last time,GRUB boots from my 1st HDD,but as mentioned above, all configuration files are stored within the 2nd HDD.

I dont think currently we need to use anti virus, since virus creator usually wont bother to design any virus target at linux because of small number of user.

Well there aren't many viruses for Linux but from what I read in the Internet, it is picking up. I guess sooner or later we will have to use it.

By the way, how much space do you allocate for Ubuntu ? I give Ubuntu 15GB only, do you guys think it is too little ?

i suppose if u just allocate 15gb for ubuntu alone it is more than enuff ... unless u are storing lots of data in the same partition as well ...

anybody facing the prob i am facing below ??? there is an outline/shadow of a previously opened window on my desktop ... it goes away sometimes but sometimes doesnt ... after reboot it clears up but will come back again randomly ..
refer to the screenshot below ...

i suppose if u just allocate 15gb for ubuntu alone it is more than enuff ... unless u are storing lots of data in the same partition as well ...

anybody facing the prob i am facing below ??? there is an outline/shadow of a previously opened window on my desktop ... it goes away sometimes but sometimes doesnt ... after reboot it clears up but will come back again randomly ..
refer to the screenshot below ...

I might be a newbie in Linux but you're using 7.10 right ? It seems that the 7.10 has that problem if I'm not wrong. Even for my 7.04, I have that problem if I turn on desktop effects.
What do you store ? Data ?

1gb for swap.

It's more than enough actually. What do you wan wan to install in ubuntu.

Well, I'd say Ubuntu is user friendliest distro I've ever used.

And it's strong community deserves a mention. They are pretty helpful.

The Ubuntu Documentation says you are strongly not encouraged to set a password for the root account. Please see this document for more details on why you should not set a password for the root account. Use the sudo, gksu (GNOME) or kdesu (KDE) commands to perform administrative tasks instead. To use a root shell, do a sudo su.

Oh, and by the way, if you don't want the Xgl with ATI cards, you need to whitelist fglrx from the Compiz wrapper (/usr/bin/compiz), and install the latest 8.42.3 driver (available from ATI's website). Read the last post from this thread.

hello...i managed to installed gutsy gibbon on my comp after failing with feisty and dapper. i really like it and i think the time for me to say goodbye to windows is almost near. this is my comp specs..
amd athlon xp 2500 barton running stock 1.8GHz
1 GB DDR ram (512 x 2) kingston
ati radeon 9800 Pro
i always wanted to try other OS than windows and already eyeing myself for Macs..but after i installed gutsy on my pc and explored it for almost 2 days...i think i found the OS that i need, and its free...and i managed to make it look exactly like the latest Mac OS Leopard rclxms.gif the compiz fusion 3d thingy..is freaking awesome! thumbup.gif i dont think my computer can handle that kind of 3d with xp..
the only thing i miss with windows will be MS Office...and i cant seem to get my all in one canon MP160 to work in gutsy sad.gif ..other than these, everything are just awesome..

I'm intended to install Ubuntu and use it as my primary OS. Is there any issue with Ubuntu as I wanted to use it for photography and video editing as compared to Windows?

if you used to photoshop, then you probably find gimp, a bit clunky, but it get the job done.

video, should work, not sure about connecting your video camera to the computer, but it should work.

you need to install video editing software on your own, it is not installed by default, but it is in the repository, just use synaptic

Here's the thing... Edubuntu is Ubuntu... Just with a few educational softwares pre-installed... So If you really want edubuntu, then install edu only... because ubuntu is the base of edubuntu and you can tweak it back to just ubuntu if you dont like the extra software... I would rather recommend you to install ubuntu, find out what extra software from edubuntu you like and want, and install those...

no problems with where you store the torrents. As long as your ntfs partition is mounted and the torrent client knows where to save files, you're fine... I have heard problems with deluge happen often... I personally recommend kTorrent. It get's past traffic shaping well (>100KBps downloads for all files some times) and is streamline with all necessary functions (RSS, widgets) and there's no bugs in the latest release.

Having the same problem here. If I enable the driver, it'll run on low graphics mode after restart. Then after i disabled it, it's ok again. Using nvidia 6600GT with driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run

I doing dual in my laptop. You just install as usuall but careful when doing in partition section. Make sure you choose manual. And you need to know which one the partition that windows use. icon_question.gif

sometimes i just dont bother with the drivers from nvidia or ati ... more likely than not your gfx card just need to ENABLE THE RESTRICTED DRIVERS ..
system>admin>restricted driver manager ... enable the driver (maje sure u have internet connection coz it needs to download the driver)
should work .. smile.gif

It's because I enable it, that's why it's running in low graphics mode. I need to disable the driver to get resolutions higher than 800x600. I'm trying to set it up using Envy now. Hope it'll work.

think ATI sux on Ubuntu, or another way round, whatever

tried some solutions found online, after reboot, voila, 1280x1024 resolution, but stuck at login screen. kept entering the username and password but the screen will go blank for a second and return back to the login screen after awhile, reformatted and using windows now, give up

Problem solved via Envy. Just run the thing and it'll configure everything for you. Should have downloaded that long ago, instead of wasting my time configuring maually.

What driver version did Envy download? Note that you will need ATI fglrx 8.42.3 and later to enable desktop effects without installing Xgl. Also, you will need to modify /usr/bin/compiz to whitelist the ATI fglrx driver. ATI Catalyst 7.11 will also work.

To whitelist the ATI fglrx driver, open /usr/bin/compiz as root, then find the following line:

CODE
WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810"

Replace with:

CODE
WHITELIST="fglrx nvidia intel ati radeon i810"

Note that you need to enable to Composite and AIGLX ServerFlag in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Did you download the CCSM? [sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager]? After that go in to Appearance and enable custom visual settings...

I've just installed Gutsy Gibbon after all the delay. I found a problem which never happened in the past versions of Ubuntu. When I press Restart, the screen will just turn black and stop responding. I will have to power down manually and start again. What's the problem?

Edit: Similar problem happened with shutdown command.

1. Backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2. run this command as root (ubuntu please use sudo)
CODE
sudo perl -pi -e "s/(Modes).*/\1 1024x768/" /etc/X11/xorg.conf

*change the value to any resolution you want to use. Make sure your monitor support the resolution you want to use.
* If you got blank screen or some how the resolution not working, just replace xorg.conf with your backup.

question 1:
basically if you are ubuntu, just type this in terminal
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

actually, it really doesn't matter for you to ends you backup file to .backup, it can be anything, it just to make sure that it got a different name,

which actually answer question 2:
in ubuntu, when need root access, start your command with sudo.
in other, type su <enter>
then type your root password.
then you will see a root shell. which is indicated with #, then just type your command.

as for your wireless, need to which what brand you use, erm fat chance it is not supported, so you probably need ndiswrapper, which might or might not work.

Did you download the CCSM? [sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager]? After that go in to Appearance and enable custom visual settings...

did that and restarted my system, got even worse, had to run in low graphic mode and can't use any other driver except the VESA generic driver, even after i changed back to fglrx and restarted, it kept changing back to VESA doh.gif the weird thing is in the restricted driver manager, they wrote there the proprietary driver was in use and enabled rclxub.gif gave up, try ubuntu when i change my rig next time, and have to make sure i dun buy ATI for my next system

Meng, I don't think it's a good idead to teach him su. There's a risk of him doing something wrong and screwing up.

Instead, use sudo... Like the first step that Meng mentioned.

type:

sudo ...blablabla...
put in password (the password will appear blank when you are typing it)

you still need to tell me what model is your card. which i don't know.

the big idea here, is to use your windows driver, to use on ubuntu.

which is why, i ask for a model, first, because, i do not guarantee that it works.
looks like it may not be supported, on linux.

need to take time, to check out how to install using ndiswrapper. which might not work at all.

the idea is to use, ndiswrapper, to run the windows driver, go check how to do that, with google.

http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/...d,installation/

but i do not guarantee that it will work

Ubuntu is not the easiest distro out there... There are other easy ones like Mandriva and Mint...
