Nvidia kills 8800GTS 320MB, relaunches 640MB

We knew that Nvidia was planning to kill the 8800GTS 320MB in order to make room for the 65nm die-shrink that the world has come to know as G92.

But it turns out that you cannot order 320MB versions any more either, since it is being pronounced as an EOL (End of Life) product.

Next in line to go through a change is the 8800GTS 640MB, which is being tweaked up in order to live through the 512MB and 256MB versions of G92.

Nvidia decided to raise the specs by another 16 scalar shader units, so the 8800GTS will now feature 112 scalar shaders, 16 less than 8800GTX/Ultra. Clockspeeds remain the same, as do thermal and other specs.

But there are a lot of miffed Nvidia partners, crying foul over the situation. Imagine the surprise of AIBs that have thousands of printed retail boxes with old specs.

If Nvidia ever says that they're thinking about greening the Planet and all other environmental chit-chat manufacturers like to use these days, ask them about how many trees they killed with just this sudden announcement.. µ

i guess it will drop..
since the new 8800gt will be out, and also the new 8800gts will be out..

i think 8800gt is better since the ram 256 and 512 is more stable..

GeForce 8800 GT Has 112 SPs Clocked @ 1.5GHz

user posted image

-600MHz core clock
-900Mhz memory clock (1.8GHz effective)
-112 stream processors
-1.5GHz shader clock
-256-bit memory interface

Several sources are suggesting that the upcoming GeForce 8800 GT has 112 stream processors like the new GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB SKU. We also heard that its shader clock is running at 1.5GHz. CJ did some nice analysis on the Nvidia's strategy here on why is there a new 8800 GTS SKU. He revealed that there is a shortage of GTX cores but plenty of GTS cores going around that didn't quite make it as a GTX. So if you launch a new product that is faster than a 8800GTS, no one will buy the more expensive GTS unless you up its stream processor count for higher performance. Also with a 320-bit memory interface, it certainly perform better at high resolutions and with lots of AA/AF/HDR. This way Nvidia can still get rid of the inventory.

Hopefully, their overclockability are better than current 8800 GTS. Like my GTS, at 600mhz core speed, the shader core is already at 1.4Ghz.

More SPs but then only 256-bit memory interface. If they can't OC that much, then their performance might not be far off from current GTS. Like mine, can OC to core/shader/ram - 648/1620/972mhz...... some people's GC can go even higher that that!!!

Regarding the GT, it seems like a promising card if the price point is right..

8800GT comes with HDMI dongle

Nvidia D8P/G92or simply called Geforce 8800GT will come with HDMI dongle and Nvidia is following ATI RV630 / RV615 footsteps here.

It was upsetting how this little thing boosted ATI's sales as many people have HDMI LCD and Plasma screens and they certainly want to connect their PCs on these big screens.

The great thing about HDMI is that it works really easy and it even comes on notebooks and this is really the first plug and play display technology. The big problem of HDMI is the royalty you need to pay and the HDCP license but if you want to enjoy HD-DVD or Blu-Ray you have to live with this evil protection thing.

Nvidia G92 GPU launch brought forward

Nvidia is bringing forward the launch date of its upcoming GeForce 8800 GT (G92) GPU to October 29 from the original November 12, targeting AMD's new Radeon HD 2950PRO (RV670) as the major competitor, according to sources at graphics card makers.

With G92 and RV670 having a tight performance/price ratio, Nvidia's earlier launch should give the company an advantage in the market, noted the sources.

In addition to G92, Nvidia will also launch the G98 GPU to replace the GeForce 8600 series, however the launch date has not yet been set, added the sources.

Nvidia was invited to comment on this report, but did not respond by the time of publication.

Geforce 8800GT dissipates 110W

G92/D8P dissipates about 110W and this is what Nvidia is telling to its loyal and less loyal chaps.

In order to cool such a card you only need a single slot solution and it doesn't look that this Nvidia's 9 inch board will be a noisy one. The card has 512MB or 256MB of frame buffer and by default it will come as the DDR3 version and you won't need more than a single 2x3 connector to make it work.

It is better than HD 2950XT, as this card dissipates some 135W, but the slower PRO version dissipates 105 only.

Nice comparison between Nvidia and ATI in DX10 games : http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/09/dir...tout/index.html

Looks like the 8800 GTS (vs 2900XT) still wins most of the test except for some benchmarks.

Also showing the advantages of 640mb vs 320mb although the advantage may not be that great.... smile.gif

P.S. Beware of one benchmark where the 8600GTS is faster than the 8800GTS!!!! rclxub.gif rclxub.gif
