QUOTE(surehit @ Jul 7 2008, 06:17 PM) BOY: I want to defend myself. MAN: Buy a gun. BOY: But gun so lame wor, can miss and not cool lar. MAN: One good shot and you're dead. BOY: Nolar, I want ninja stars because in the movie Revenge of the Ninja Part XXX the ninjas used it to kill all the soldiers with M16. MAN: Hi Even just as a joke, the above conversation makes some sense. So many people out there have been ignorantly (sorry to say) saying "with guns we can do without martial arts", without even looking into the reality. People with that sort of mentality should first think why police/military/other enforcement personnel are all required to undergo intensive non-armed self-defence training programmes when they are already equipped with sophisticated ammunitions. In Malaysia and most other countries the public are banned from bringing guns (and even blades) for personal protection. If that's not enough, in fact, so many cases of street violence do not even involve firearm-equipped offenders. And this is where self alertness plus good self-defence skills come handy. QUOTE(QD_buyer @ Aug 3 2008, 12:47 AM) pesilat here ! I saw the documentary on Silat the other day on Discovery. You know where these two guys go around the world to learn martial arts? Looked pretty cool and one thing I noticed is that it continued to look good even in match fights A lot of other martial arts in sports form lose their beauty imo I saw there were some takedowns? Do you also learn ground-fighting?

Wanted to try BJJ or Judo or something else, used to do Taekwondo last time but had a really lousy environment and no eQuipments. I'm actually small in size and I look like 16 even though I'm 19. Unfortunately, I'm heading down to Singapore this weekend for something. Maybe I could come the week after this one. Is that possible? Ding's Martial Arts Gym is at Kelana Jaya there right? Zzzz...I really don't feel like driving down there due to bad experience even though I'm around Taman Tun. Does anyone live near Taman Tun?

Hi there Yes, most silat styles have a fair share of both stand-up and takedown/ground-fighting techniques alike, hence the advantages (and disadvantages too) of being broad-based.

I do agree with that. I did consider supplementing my Aikido with other martial arts as I think once you progress to a certain level in a martial art, the effort it requires to learn more goes up. Kinda like an exponential curve? I was perhaps thinking that's why MMA has been so effective and popular as you pick up the principles of each martial art and you get a well rounded system that is excellent in practical situations and easier to learn but at the cost of not learning the finer touches of each style. Probably the best choice for someone looking for martial arts as a self defense form. With Aikido especially the good parts of it come only much later in training (probably more so than martial arts) so I was thinking that perhaps diluting my focus would affect my Aikido development. Do you find this to be the case with other martial arts as well?

Here is a blog from one of them: http://ohmigoshumeanitsonly9inches.blogspo...rt-journey.htmlInstead of reading and theorizing, why don't you drop by one of the MMA/BJJ gyms and try them out yourself. Discover the journey yourself like bro Rizan above. Wishing you all the best.
