Hey guys,

Try TNT Kickboxing in Desa Sri Hartamas. http://www.tntkickboxing.com/index.htm

Khoo Meng Yang "The Red Dragon" train and teach here. He's the runner-up to last year Ultimate Warrior. Or you can go Ipoh and train in Bernard Radin gym.

I also heard that Allied Martial Arts gym teach Kickboxing too. http://martialarts.com.my/community/module...php?storyid=291

Finally, Xtreme Kickboxing. http://www.kickboxingmalaysia.com

But I have NO idea of their training format (drills only or full contact or mix). Heard TNT has a lot of girls there, should be worthwhile to check it out. brows.gif

If you do visit, please share it with us here. icon_rolleyes.gif

PS. U ever consider Muay Thai or MMA?

I think i still interested in hand combat in close proximity and disarm weapon technique using arm . I want to know which master work as Special force in SAS or military before. I want to be the next Jason Bourne. Should i take Wushu instead because of the fast hand technique?

All these kickboxing stuff sounds cartooney.

I hope by that your meant GOOD Muay Thai or MMA or not, coz you must be living in Pulau Batu if you are not aware that Malaysia have Muay Thai and MMA.

The champ of last year Ultimate Warrior Bernard Radin has his own MT gym in Ipoh, Perak.

If you wanna know more about MT in Malaysia, follow this: http://boxxtomoi.blogspot.com/

For a list of Muay Thai clubs: http://martialarts.com.my/community/module...ewcat.php?cid=8

For BJJ & MMA, we have:

KDTA: http://www.kdta.com (Adam Kayoom train and teach here)

Brutal BJJ: http://klbjj.blogspot.com/

Crush MMA: http://escobarbjj.blogspot.com (lead by ADCC Champ & BJJ Black Belt Marcos Escobar - should be da best!)

Dang I wish I could train in all of em! Muay Thai and MMA rules!

I do agree with that. I did consider supplementing my Aikido with other martial arts as I think once you progress to a certain level in a martial art, the effort it requires to learn more goes up. Kinda like an exponential curve?

I was perhaps thinking that's why MMA has been so effective and popular as you pick up the principles of each martial art and you get a well rounded system that is excellent in practical situations and easier to learn but at the cost of not learning the finer touches of each style. Probably the best choice for someone looking for martial arts as a self defense form.

With Aikido especially the good parts of it come only much later in training (probably more so than martial arts) so I was thinking that perhaps diluting my focus would affect my Aikido development. Do you find this to be the case with other martial arts as well?
*
Hi Rueben,

I knew 3 Aikido BBs who shifted to BJJ training here. Here is a blog from one of them:

http://ohmigoshumeanitsonly9inches.blogspo...rt-journey.html

Instead of reading and theorizing, why don't you drop by one of the MMA/BJJ gyms and try them out yourself. Discover the journey yourself like bro Rizan above.

Wishing you all the best.

Depends on which Academy you go to:

KDTA: http://www.kdta.com

Brutal BJJ: http://klbjj.blogspot.com/

Crush MMA: http://escobarbjj.blogspot.com (lead by ADCC Champ & BJJ Black Belt Marcos Escobar - should be da best!)

and the latest one: http://pjjiujitsu.blogspot.com/

Please share your experience if you do attend the training. All the best and enjoy!

Oh, btw, nothing sexist but I realised you are a girl so please take note that as in any grappling arts, BJJ involve a lot body to body contact.

Right. not going to go down this path of what is useless or what's not. Somehow martial arts talks always degrade into these sort of things.

I never dissed MMA nor intended to and apologize if that's what it seemed I was doing. Average.joe mentioned the advantages and drawbacks of a broad based approach to things and I just wanted some further illustration on that,

... something I can use well into my old age. The philosophy of non resistance and harmony appeals to my character as well.

surehit: Thanks for the suggestion, do you know of any place in Kuching that does this? I would be interested in seeing how it turns out.
*
Hi Reuben,

With due respect to Aikido and all the other martial arts, I have to say 2HK is right. MMA is NOT about "broad-based approach". In fact, for lack of a better word, MMA can be an "martial art" by itself, easily identifiable by it's common striking, kicking, clinching (mostly Muay Thai based) and grappling (mostly BJJ based) techniques.

If you are looking to experiment and try this, try that, then it is not MMA imo.

Also, like 2HK said, most of the lower percentage techniques have already been filtered out in MMA, whether through evolution or by trials and errors during MMA fights.

Here are more blogs of individuals (all M'sians) from Aikido, TKD, Karate etc who have ventured in MMA or BJJ:

http://durianbelacan.blogspot.com/2008/07/...n-thinking.html (Aikido)

http://subject2changes.blogspot.com/2007/1...artial-art.html (TKD)

http://wannaroll.blogspot.com/ (Karate)

http://mma-rules.blogspot.com (Karate)

http://betweenheavenandthemat.blogspot.com/ (Judo)

So you see, there are plenty of inviduals who found their passion in MMA, and of course some who tried and gave up. Bottom line, it's for YOU to find out.

I know a gym in Sabah, but not Kuching. I'll try to ask around for you. KL is still d place where you have the most choices. All the best.

You left out out wrestling a very important part of MMA.

Most " mma " gyms or who proclaim themselves as such in KL are sh1t .

But what we really need is a competition , find out who's who and what's what.
*
Ya, agreed, Western Wrestling, Greco-Roman, Sambo, Judo left great influence on many MMA fighters. Was just giving simple illustrations to Rueben.

Nway, why you said most gyms in KL are sh1t? U been to all of them? Perhaps you can share your experience here. I train in KDTA, not sure you know them?

BTW, not everyone who trains MMA wants to compete. Like any arts, some people do it just as a "hobby".

Ya, I always wonder about that myself. Do you know why? I thought we do have some Muay Thai fighters up north in Kelantan and Kedah. Adam Kayoom, the current WPMF World Muay Thai champ used to train and teach in my gym, but mainly on BJJ (he's a brown belt).

do u think in street fighting, using leg is effective? i think most martial art expert fear is falling to the ground. Once the person hits the ground, boxing is useless, kickboxing is useless, wing chun is useless, karate is useless, taekwondo is useless..

But most street fighting style will end up falling to the ground when facing a strong built person . An opponent don't have to be a martial artist but if he has muscle built , chances of hitting the ground is high.
Dude, have you ever heard of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), it was the most dominant martial arts in no holds barred or vale tudo fighting (full contact with min rules).

BJJ is the art that allow a person to dominate, control, strike or submit (choke or break his joints) another on the ground. MA scene in Malaysia is a little backward compare to other countries. Most people have not heard of BJJ or MMA (mix martial arts). But there are few BJJ and MMA gyms here in Malaysia now.

Kicks are not useless, it's how you use it, under what circumstances (an opening, right distance, you set it up etc) or intentions (to distract for the punch, to cripple, to KO etc). If you have taken a kick from a Muay Thai figther you will understand kicks are NOT useless.

Take a look at this video to see how BJJ and MMA is use when fighting on the ground.

I agreed that being fit, strong and conditioned is a great equalizer. Maybe dun even need to fight coz you are able to run faster than your attackers.

Hi people,
I wonder is there an open age mix martial arts tournament in malaysia?it would be nice to check out these events. Any idea how to get to know of these events?
You must be practicing Kung Fu in a cave if you have never heard of the Ultimate Warrior Competition Malaysia. tongue.gif

Read more about Bernard Radin the 2007 champ here: http://martialarts.com.my/community/module...php?storyid=490

Although it might not be a full NHB or Vale Tudo competition like the UFC, it's a good start in the right direction.

Are you interested to compete, or just wanna go watch?

I should get out more often. What art do u practise btw?
I hope to get the experience of competing but i think better to watch and learn first i guess.
Any upcoming events in 2009? i saw one muay thai tournament happening in February, but was hoping to see something mixed up.

Sorry what is NHB and Vale Tudo?
No need to get out more often, just get in the correct gym. icon_idea.gif

I practise the art of in-ya-face-tapout aka rojak aka MMA. laugh.gif

Seriously dude, before you compete, best you spar more. And be aware of the big difference between point sparring and full contact sparring. If you dunno, ask your instructor or sifu.

Not sure about events here coz I dun have time to monitor or go watch. I don't think there is any real MMA competition here, except perhaps few in-house BJJ competitions and private ones. The biggest "mix" competition open to all is probably Ultimate Warrior. Ask around.

NHB = No Holds Barred, Vale Tudo = full contact fighting with min rules (anything goes). Standup-Clinch-Ground-everything. You wanna see mix? See the video below:

Where are u from ?have u participated in any of these open events before?
i'm kinda looking for a partner to spar with (and not to get broken limbs). Are u interested? I'm about 170 cm and 60kg. I'm mostly trained as a striker, but would love to incorporate grappling and takedowns.

Youtube's "chosonninja" is a favourite of mine. I like his techniques and his movement. Truth be told i do most of my learning from analyzing videos, and mostly practise alone.
From KL. Nope I haven't participated in any of them. I train simply becoz I love to train.

I'm not a pro-fighter, so I only spar in the safety of my gym. I'm wary of sparring without proper supervision, safety gears and somebody who knows basic first aid. Our gym is fully matted, and most of us are trained in basic first aid. Unfortunately, it's for members only. Join one of our combat sports programs (CMD or BJJ) if you like to spar becoz we spar a lot in our gym. More info here: http://www.kdta.com

IMO, practicing alone and watching videos are not effective to learn martial arts. It's like playing badminton, tennis or squash. How to improve by training alone?

PM me if you have any questions re our gym. Cheers. icon_rolleyes.gif

jak kickboxing i find it quite old .

Running through theories and concepts are not useless. But of course, to be well rounded, practical application should be done.
I see that from the website, the cheapest cost is RM375 per quarter (for classes) + RM100 per year membership.
Is there any other option? Also will there be a need to buy the uniform as well? or can we just train with a normal T shirt and sports pants.

Are you by any chance the guy in the photo of the site ?tongue.gif Tough looking dude.
I didn't say they were useless lar, just less effective compare to training with people in gym, dojo, dojang whatever. You see, although you might "think" you have fully understood the concepts, applications or techniques from watching a video or reading a book, actually doing it is very different.

The variables in actual training are too many to even mention: there is no way you can understand energy, motion, timing, speed, strength, resistance, toughness (both mental and physical) from watching videos or reading books.

user posted image user posted image user posted image

If you are really interested, PM me to arrange a trial class for you. Then you can see if this is for you. But please bear in mind that we train hard so some degree of fitness is required. flex.gif We are really a friendly bunch, so if you enjoy "hard training" with da monkey boys, come on over. wink.gif

For our CMD program, you'll need boxing gloves, MMA gloves, mouth guard, shin protector, groin protector and etc. Just wear t-shirts and shorts although fightwear is recommended (rash guard & fight shorts) because there is some degree of hard contact. Wouldn't want your shorts to be torn from grappling right? (maybe your gf do lar) brows.gif CMDP is a MMA regimen consisting of striking, clinch, takedowns and grappling. thumbup.gif

For our BJJ program, you'll need a BJJ gi and fightwear for no-gi nites. This is a purely grappling program with throws, takedowns, control and submissions.

But dun worry about all those gears, we have loaners for those who want to try out the programs.

Hope everything is clearer now. Cheers! icon_rolleyes.gif

BTW, we just opened a new gym in Kuching, run by my good buddy and his wife. More info here: http://studio23.my/

There are 2 flavours of JKD: JKD Concept and Jung Fan JKD (Lee Jung Fan is Bruce Lee's original name). JKD Concept is Bruce Lee idea of "take is what good, discard what is useless - be like water". So it's more of concepts, strategies and mixing few MAs up for the best result for you personally.

For those interested in following closely Bruce Lee's way of fighting, then Jung Fan JKD might be for you. So hey, whatever rocks your boat. flex.gif

Anyone here seen the movie Never Back Down? It shows some really sick MMA moves (not real but nicely choreographed) tongue.gif

Haha that would be deadly, just wondering........where can i learn boxing?

Oo....we have a club here at MMU Malacca.
Lim Khim Seng is our sensei for the club. A 5th Dan Judoka. Also an IJF Referee for Malaysia.
He's good, but i'm lousy. The reason being........i'm LAZY. haha. Need to train more.
Well, my coaches are good too, and I'm lousy coz of the same reason, lazy. tongue.gif

We have boxing here in our gym, but it's with MMA flavour, eg. modified square stance to prevent takedowns.

Places that offer boxing is Allied Martial Arts gym in Sri Hartamas, TNT and Extreme Kickboxing (also in Sri Hartamas). TNT and Extreme is more kickboxing with emphasis on cardio & fitness. Only Allied had a pro-boxing program last I heard. Also a place in SS2 with a Russian coach but forgot the name. Anyone can help?

Other places are probably RMC, Pulapol, and all those cadet schools which produce some of the country best amatuer boxers.

We used to have friendly matches with Judokas from Bangsar Judo Club. We use BJJ against Judo and normally the Judoka would get the throws and pins but unable to finish with any submissions. Once on the ground, things favour the BJJ chap more, with all other things (size, strength, speed, timing etc) being equal = same weight class.

wah chai, if there's a JKD club in Malaysia then its not original. As u know JKD is created by Bruce Lee's thinking and philosophy. No one can able to read Bruce Lee's mind but u can feel his passion. That's mean if u wanna learn real JKD, u have to learn direct from Bruce Lee or at least his close fren...

Actually U can apply JKD in any MAs, u can buy Bruce Lee's books and read, i think this is the best way to apply. Example, u use JKD to enhance your kickboxing...something like tat...
Nice understanding & explanation man. rclxms.gif

For those interested in JKD, here's a great blog from Malaysia: http://jkd-uswah.blogspot.com/

The video below by Tommy Carruthers, a JKD master, showed great similarities to Wing Chun. But do listen to Guro Dan Inosanto (Bruce Lee foremost student) explanation on JKD. Enjoy! icon_rolleyes.gif
