Hi

Even just as a joke, the above conversation makes some sense. So many people out there have been ignorantly (sorry to say) saying "with guns we can do without martial arts", without even looking into the reality. People with that sort of mentality should first think why police/military/other enforcement personnel are all required to undergo intensive non-armed self-defence training programmes when they are already equipped with sophisticated ammunitions.

In Malaysia and most other countries the public are banned from bringing guns (and even blades) for personal protection. If that's not enough, in fact, so many cases of street violence do not even involve firearm-equipped offenders. And this is where self alertness plus good self-defence skills come handy.

I saw the documentary on Silat the other day on Discovery. You know where these two guys go around the world to learn martial arts? Looked pretty cool and one thing I noticed is that it continued to look good even in match fights biggrin.gif A lot of other martial arts in sports form lose their beauty imo sad.gif

I saw there were some takedowns? Do you also learn ground-fighting?

Hi there

Yes, most silat styles have a fair share of both stand-up and takedown/ground-fighting techniques alike, hence the advantages (and disadvantages too) of being broad-based.

hi all

WTF Taekwondo Pro Tour, Mexico City - 5x World champ Steven Lopez gets KO-ed, now that's news!

UK's Aaron Cook claimed the biggest scalp of his life with a spectacular knockout of American Steven Lopez, the five-time world champion and double Olympic champion, to win the inaugural Taekwondo Pro Tour event in Mexico City.

Cook, who narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal when he finished fourth in Beijing last summer, had never beaten Lopez before and was overcome with emotion after sending the sport's most decorated fighter crashing to the floor with brilliant headshot in the final round.

The win also earned the Manchester-based Cook, who is one of the 'Telegraph Ten to Watch for 2012'. his biggest ever pay-day with a first prize of £18,000.

The 18-year-old made his breakthrough onto the senior circuit at the Dutch Open Championships in 2007 where he took bronze after losing to Torann Mazeroi. Replays went on to show that the result should have gone in Cook's favour after two head shots went unawarded.

Since his debut competition, Cook has won a further three bronze medals, one silver and two gold.
