Since I have roots from HK and visit 2 to 3 times a year (before fcuking COVID19 stopped all that), my nephews and nieces ensure my Cantonese is up to the mark - kids are brutal... no give face. Wrong word, wrong pronunciation, they’ll rip you apart hahaha.

ur forefathers and relatives some settled down in HK during early 1900s?

Even within Peninsular Malaysia it's different la.
I guess it depends on which cities the diaspora originated. Back in the old days, Chinese migrants to South East Asia tended to congregate in places they could find people from their home town.
North Peninsular Malaysia had a lot of people from Zhangzhou, compared to southern and central Peninsular Malaysia where there were more from Quanzhou and Amoy.

For example, egg in Penang hokkien is "nui", but southern Malaysian hokkien it's "n'eng" or something liddat.

I'm not so sure what Sarawak Hokkien is like but likely it should be similar to either one of the two major varieties above.
