Hi Sifu

I am going to Osaka but will take a train to Kyoto first. Any tips on what kind of JR pass I should get?

Osaka-Kyoto is roughly ¥3000/way, a 7 day JR pass is ¥30000, you can do the maths tongue.gif

Hi,

I am flying using Eva airline and layover at Taipei Taoyuan Airport,

a few questions if anyone knows

1) Due to new covid regulation for flying from China, just wondering is Taipei considered? Coz need to do the test prior to flying.

2) When filling up the fast track entry form, it ask to fill in flight number. As mine is connecting flight, do I fill in the one kl-taipei, or taipei-osaka. Or does not matter

3) have anyone done layover at taoyuan airport? can find sleeping places ie is it many? i have a 20 hour layover before heading off to Osaka

Thanks

Tried getting it from Klook, but payment keep declining. And review quite bad on the delivery from Klook.

i used eva airline and did the same as yours, layover at TPE airport when i flew to and fro tokyo.

1. Don't understand this question. If you got 3 jabs of vaccine then u don't need to do any testing prior to flying.

2. taipei - osaka will do

3. TPE airport terminal is really really huge so a lot of places for you to rest. While you can find places to sleep there, normally the comfortable one or the paid resting armchair one will be used by other people, so prepare to be uncomfortable. If you have a 20 hour layover, may i suggest going out of the airport instead of waiting in the airport for so long?

Just curious if there are any merchant credit/debit card fees for using cards in Japan?

Like in Lowyat, when you purchase computer parts, etc the shop will charge you additional 2% if you use cards, is it the same in Japan in places like BIC camera or Yodobashi camera?

Also anyone using multi currency debit cards like Wise for ATM withdrawals? Any issues or comments?

To answer your 1st question, no such thing in japan for places i have been to (central japan, kyoto, osaka, tokyo). Everything charged as per price written be it cash or card. I only use it at restuarant and department store la.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. As for question no 1 because Japan say flight from china need to do pcr test or something like that. I was wondering flight from Taiwan considered as (china region) or not..but I can answer this question here also. I did the fast track application on Japan website and not necessary.

3. Yah, just feel lazy to travel 1.5 hours to town to zzz then 1.5 hours back..waste energy n money 😆 coz my layover vy weird la, is at sleeping hours so basically just sleep nia cant do anything else in town

How was EVA flight for you btw?

Luckily mine was just an overnight layover around 7 - 8 hours both to and fro, so just sleep at the airport will do.

The flight is quite alright. Nothing out of the ordinary. Though u might need to check if the airplane has USB port for you to charge any of your devices. For me the flight back from tokyo to tpe was an old plane so it does not have any USB port. The screen is not a touch screen at all, it uses the old style remote attached to the seat to navigate the entertainment system.

Other than that overall so far so good.

I got the JR West Kansai Wide Pass by walking in at JTB Amoda building. They will issue you an exchange order on the spot upon payment. When you have reached Japan, you can then look for a JR Service Center (for my case it’s at Shin-Osaka station). You can find the list of service center at the info sheet provided. They will verify your passport and the exchange order before issuing you the actual JR pass which you use it at the ticket gates.

When purchasing at JTB, its better to have a snapshot of your passport details ready, because the name in your passport has to be the same as the name in the exchange order.

is there any difference buying the JR pass from Klook or any other vendor vs from JTB?

Some threads from Tripadvisor said buying direct from JTB allows online pre-booking of seats prior to visiting Japan whereas vendor you can only book seats in person while in Japan

Wish to know this as well, based on any of JR website regard to the JR pass that will then link to Japan Rail Pass which I assume is their official Japan agent in selling the pass.

From the website it wrote "If you purchased a JAPAN RAIL Pass online, you can book a reserved seat on the dedicated website (JAPANRAIL PASS Reservation)." But the price is higher than the usual one compared to those travel agents JPY 29,650 compared to JPY 33,610.

If you are using wise, no extra charges whatsoever, from spending at BIC camera to small individual vendors. Been using it here for the past two weeks. Unless you are retrieving cash here using ATM then there will be a 7% charges.
