Only problem with microsoft is the accessories price never drop. The nvme ssd now 400-500 1tb can get real good but the expansion card 1tb need 1k 😂

Thats where sony is better abit.

yeah. dont know why they go with proprietary SSD design.
its just nvme3 x4 / nvme4 x 2. the price should already be as low as possible.
with seagate as the sole manufacturer, the price will not drop anytime soon.

This isn't actually something new, if you think about it. The original Xbox had those 8MB memory cards, the 360 also supported memory cards (before they supported external storage as memory cards). This stopped for a while during the Xbox One era, but now they are once again using proprietary storage.

And if we are talking about internal storage, Xbox had never allowed self upgrading of their storage, from day one. The OG Xbox did use a standard IDE hard disk, but had to be a specific type (unless you use a custom dashboard, but then you can't boot to the default dashboard). The 360 used those removable hard disk things (in actuality just a 2.5" HDD in an enclosure), and those things were also overpriced. It's only after Microsoft allowed external storage support that things became more affordable. And now we're back to this old shit. Sigh.

i did not have OG xbox.
during x360, i bought 2.5" HDD Western Digital, flash the firmware as "xbox".

the only thing possible right now is USB to sata SSD for xboxone games.
xbox expansion card remain too expensive for now.

highly unlikely i think.
as XSX got the highest TFLOP this gen, then dont need to do a mid gen refresh unless PS5Pro come out?

and they also make easy money selling outdated SSD with premium price.

Of course you can, it's just a matter of creating a custom shortcut named DEFAULT.XBE and pointing it to the default dashboard XBE in C:. Of course I don't see any reason to do so, especially so many custom dashboards offer so many more features than the default one.

And it was always standard IDE hard disks and cables, the only difference is the Xbox assigns a key to the hard disk which makes it unusable in consoles. Of course if you have a modded Xbox the key can be easily nulled.

Ah ok. I didn't venture that far enough then. I just knew if I swapped out the original hard disk with my own, I could no longer boot to the default XBE. It was only in the 360 era, and even then, with RGH only, that I started mucking around with custom dashboard.

I have no idea why Microsoft lock down their internal storage so tightly. Sony never bothered, and it was easy to swap/upgrade storage in PS2-PS5.

The original Xbox is really fun to play with once a modchip is installed cos its PC and Windows underpinnings make it very easy to explore and mod.

At least it's easier now with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and can easily install games in external storage. smile.gif

no. this is sata3 ssd.
im using it with external USB case for 2.5inch drive.
plugin to xbox, format as xbox storage "Use for Games", not media storage "Use for Media".
then able to transfer xbox backward compatibility games into it.

I'm using a 2TB Crucial MX500 to store XB1 games, and a 1TB Hitachi hard disk (originally from my PS4 Pro) to store legacy Xbox 360 and Xbox games.

Still saving up to get a 2TB Seagate expansion cartridge...

How's the loading speed running those non XsX games on external storage compared to running them natively from the internal SSD?

now trigger finger itchy after CNY tongue.gif

from YT benchmark, more or less the same.
as my own experience, its load as intended. didnt make a comparison on my own.
but if the game is online like some EA games, the loading slow cause of their own server, not SSD.

I bought the NVME SSD 1TB as external storage for my Series S. transfer speed is quite fast. I've seen YT compare speed, its almost same with the existing internal storage. downside is, its only for running Xbox One or 360/xbox1 games. you need to transfer to internal storage if you want to play X|S symbol games.
