really deja vu... i think i answer this ques more than 10 times.. lol...
must prime your kit so the paint will stick well.... so it's best u sand nicely then primer...
industrial spray cans must spray far than the normal ones... spray left and right to cover the whole part with the paint.. after spraying a few kits then u kno one...
good luck... u'll learn from trial and error. smile.gif

Hi all,

I bought my first gunpla yesterday. It's a HG of scale 1/144 and i thought of 'decorating' it but not to the level for displaying blush.gif . This model will be a 1-shot project as i'm not really into gun-pla-ing; but since i bought one why not make it look at least semi-decent.

I read thru the pinned thread and the corresponding tutorials for newbies, but thought it might be better to ask for confimation before i buy the required materials. tongue.gif

Basically i plan just to do lining and some painting to replace the stickers and also certain parts that come in 1 color (mostly the weaponry and some parts of the limbs .... maybe some slight paint to cover up the left-over nubs (if got) ).

So the items i'll need are : gundam markers, topcoat, primer(?), thinner for cleaning up. As for the paint i'm intending to use Acrylic type, and handpaint it. Process will be line-> paint -> assemble and finally topcoat?

Hope my question isn't weird, and fellow forumers out there can answer. Many thanks in advance. notworthy.gif

Its easier to classify paints by their cap... i assume u guys are using Gunze Sangyo's line of paints ...
Please note that the names are all based on the LABELS on the product... not on the description written in XL Shop !!!!!

Mr. Color ( lacquer based ) paint = Mohawk-shaped cap

1. Thinner that can be used :

Mr. Color Thinner 110 ml/250 ml/400 ml
Mr. Color Leveling Thinner 110 ml/400 ml

Hobby Color ( water based ) paint = FLAT shaped cap

1. Thinner that can be used :

Hobby Color Thinner 110 ml/400 ml

See the difference in the names ? hope this clears up some confusion. smile.gif

at last. thanks man.. i already know about their cap BUT always confius with their name..hehe

so now about retarder thingy.. it for acrylic or laquer paint? cos in the xl-shop it state for laquer (Mr.Retarder Mild use to slow down the speed of dry of Thinners & Mr. Colors) or retarder can be use bot for acrylic n laquer

hmm... it's a good thing that u wan to "decoarte" ur gundam.. haha...
the proper items u need at 1st is a cutter and design knife... if u plan to continue buying more gunpla then it shud be worth to get all these items... if u're using acrylic type, this is water based so mixing with water, KENOT MIX wiv thinner...
the correct process shud be pre assemble->sand->cover seam lines-> prime-> paint-> decals-> topcoat..... but some of the steps here u can skip like decals coz HG dun hav ma... tongue.gif
any other questions?

XL dun bring in air-canister... they only have those liquid form of surfacer and color in small bottles.
which means u need to use AB to spray them or, use brush to do hand brush.

possible, but u will waste a lot of paint to give a nice paint....juz what i did to my red frame, no surfacer,n end up with two can of tamiya spray..but the color till now still ok la....xbnyak yg tanggal...so,the moral is, apply the surfacer 1st

ok stick well as in, if u dun prime a false move(accidentally scratch it) the paint peels off...
If u prime, the paint won't peel off so easily coz there's a layer to hold the paint... get wat i mean?
i've tried b4 priming and without it... the paint easily cracks and peels off.. so now i prime all my kits...

thanks for the input. I already have the required tools and ingredients except the paints, topcoat and primer. Went out to find them today but only managed to get the marker and surfacer ...

Other than Mr. Color series and Tamiya color, are there any kinda paints that can be used? I stumbled upon this Pelikan Plaka(?) today and the staff said that it can be used for gunpla painting as well. @_@ Also, which topcoat should i get? I don't really know the major difference between all 3 types other than they're ... glossy and non glossy. doh.gif

you already answered it yourself biggrin.gif
both are the same..only that white one come out white and you can skip the white paint if you want to...but to me..its not really recommended and also to me white surfacer are useless...cause i still paint over it after i prime
