Ipaq 512 being sold at RM999. (That is what i paid for)
Dopod C500 at RM1688
Dopod 577w at RM600 to RM750++ (search at lelong)
From my point of view HP is still the best bang for your buck. I have read the spec on C500. Its main selling point is the sliding qwerty keyboard.
I bought it online. You can try to call their callcenter 1800-88-4889 for help. Maybe can asked them if they have shop selling it. Or you can search for a retailer at this link: http://h50112.www5.hp.com/my/search.asp

I think dopod 577w is a better bang for bucks, let's compare the specs shall we?

HP 512

QUOTE
OS: Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition
Dimension: 107mm x 48.6mm x 16.3mm, 102g
CPU: TI OMAP 850, 200MHz
Memory: 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM
Expansion Slot: microSD
Display: 2.0" transflective, 176x220 pixels, 256k colours (OS can support up to 64k)
Phone: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, VoIP, UMA (client is optional)
Camera: 1.3 Mega pixel CMOS camera
Audio: Microphone, receiver, speaker
Connector: miniUSB 1.1, 2.5mm stereo headphone jack
Wireless: Bluetooth 1.2, WiFi 11b/g with WPA2 security
Battery: Removable/Rechargeable 1100 mAh Lithium-ion

Dopod 577w
QUOTE
OS - Windows Mobile 5 ( can be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6 via a custom ROM update )
Dimension - Size: 107.54 x 46.2 x 17 , 106g- a mere cm higher, but slimmer, and slightly thicker, as well as 6 g heavier so its around the same size
CPU - TI OMAP 850, 200mhz - its the same
Memory : 64MB ROM, 64MB RAM - HP wins by having additional 64MB ROM
Display : 2.2 inch QVGA resolution, 64k - Dopod wins by having a bigger and higher resolution screen
Phone : Quadband/GPRS/EDGE - VOIP client can be found in WM6 - so its a draw
Camera: 1.3 Mega pixel CMOS camera - same
Audio: Microphone, receiver, speaker - same
Connector: miniUSB 1.1, 2.5mm stereo headphone jack - same
Wireless: Bluetooth 1.2, Wifi 11b - HP wins here because it supports 11g - however, a registry patch allows dopod 577w to access G networks , at B speed which is more than sufficient, given the fact that you will never reach the full speed of B while surfing the net everywhere, at least in Malaysia
Battery: Removable/Rechargeable 1150 mAh Lithium-ion - Dopod wins, but by a mere 50 mAh - not that important

So the conclusion is, the differences are

1) OS - HP has WM6, Dopod has WM5 ( but soon can be changed to WM6) - so its a draw
2) Screen - HP - 2.2inch, 176 * 220 - Hell, you cant even install any QVGA smartphone application for Windows Mobile 5, you got to install Windows Mobile 2003 applications !!! where as Dopod uses QVGA resolution, wiht a larger screen
3) Battery - HP has 1100mah, 577w uses 1150mah - makes no difference, so lets assume its a draw
4) ROM memory - HP wins by having more ROM
5) WiFi card - lets assume its a draw
6) Weight and Dimension - lets assume its a draw

So is it still questionable which is more worth it? You are paying RM999 , RM249 more than the lelong price of Dopod 577w, that is why earlier on, I suggested to pay more and get C500, or rather get a second hand Dopod 577w, or consider yourself damn lucky if you can still find a retail unit.

I hope you won't regret if you are not able to run QVGA application properly, the OS supports QVGA, but i dont know how it handles when displaying QVGA resolution on a non QVGA screen. Let's talk about computer, if you attempt to run a higher resolution, the monitor wont display, what about this phone? Will the phone just go haywire when running QVGA, or the QVGA resolution will be shrinked to fit a 176 x 220, that means some pixels are ommited, and I believe it will look pretty awful when running QVGA apps.

My personal opinion, at first, when I heard of this phone, I thought it would be a great phone for those who likes something similar to 577w now that it is not available anymore, but now I think otherwise. Besides that, Dopod 577w is based on the hardware reference of HTC Tornado which is sold worldwide by HTC, there are huge user base and support from other users can be obtained easily. One place you can go is to xda-developers, where there are many enthusiastic ROM cookers who constantly provide upgrades, hacks, new softwares and even ROMS from other brands that is based on the same hardware reference, so there should be no problem with support.

yeah, the processor and RAM is the same like Dopod C500 also running WM6.
*
200mhz is just sufficient enough, no heavy games, no nonsense, I have been using my dopod 577w, and very seldom it hangs, perhaps few weeks once, I can bear with it. Come to think of it even, Dopod M700, P800w also uses this processor. Not to forget, we have OMAP clock, a software which can be used to overclock or underclock the processor, from 170mhz up till 270mhz , though no one will dare to go that high, maybe around 234mhz. There is also an app called Tornado Power Controlled, designed for tornado, but can be used on some other OMAP devices, which dynamically change the clock speed to balance between battery and performance - low clock when idle, higher clock when apps running

Think on the bright side, 200mhz consumes less power, my phone can last for 2-3 days on normal usage

Added on July 14, 2007, 5:01 pmForget to mention about the softwares

Office Outlook Mobile (Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks); -
Office Mobile (Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile);
Internet Explorer Mobile; Windows Live Messenger;
Windows Media Player 10 Mobile; Voice Recorder; Cyberon Voice Commander;
ActiveSync; Wireless Manager; Java VM (MIDP 2.0, CIDC 1.1);
File Explorer; Calculator; Solitaire; Bubble Breaker; SIM Toolkit;

All the above are standard APPS that come with Windows Mobile, and I would say half of it is rubbish, and 3rd party software works better

Since your phone hasnt arrive, I would suggest you to pay more for C600, not only you are paying for sliding keypad, you are also paying for

1) better screeen, higher resolution
2) huge support from other users
3) constant firmware updates, from other manufactures which is usually more stable ( it will void the warranty )

Dude, read my post above, how can it be a killer device, if it does not even have a QVGA screen, running GPS on a 2.4 QVGA screen is already awful, let alone running it on a 172 x 220 2.2 inch screen

QVGA apps will output 320 x 240, means the screen would have to omit some of the pixels away, try resizing a picture in photoshop and shrink it, and that is how it would look like

hi hi ppl.. ok got to use the HP 512 for the whole day today... was on EDGE the whole day MSN-ing lol..

some quick comments:-
-menu and layout need a little getting used to from SE phone
-MSN works great, however couldn't get it to work with WiFi yet.. only through EDGE for now. And the "add emoticon" seems lil buggy.. sometimes it will kick me out of MSN and i need to re-signin.
-speaker is loud ( comparable to K618i)
-keypads little hard to press, or maybe it's just too hard compared to K618
-camera is a letdown.. 1.3mp w/o full screen viewfinder?

more coming soon as i play around with this lil machine smile.gif
