I think it's possible to learn how to tread water etc without an instructor. But strokes wise, to swim longer distance, need good technique. Need to get basics right, and best to learn with an instructor so someone can correct you
*
yup.

and it might not be easy to switch to proper stroke once you are used to your own strokes.

I saw one guy swim butterfly really like so wrong... I think he learned himself one.

Need instructor if u want to swim properly.  If you are talented , very fast u pick up. No instructor , no one to correct your strokes.

I actually learned how to swim from my friend who is not an instructor but he was able to correct my strokes whenever possible. So the best option is to get an instructor then. Will probably do so after MCO! Thanks you both smile.gif

Butterfly is one of the hardest strokes out there! Very easy to learn the wrong things haha

Swim is best for elderly. But for me in my 40’s too easy. I prefer weight training and HIIT.

Would encourage everyone especially kids to learn how to swim, not only for elderly. It is a basic skill into any watersport. Just like running before football.

Apart from sports, it is also a required skill for careers in shipping, airlines, fisheries, govt agencies eg navy, bomba, customs etc

Swimming is also a good sport for elderly. Very minimal impact on joints.

as we get older, sports like badminton, jogging, cycling would become unsuitable due to joint problem.

+1 on your reply. thumbsup.gif
Also it's a good alternative exercise for overweight / obese people as it's low impact and works most of the muscle groups too. flex.gif

Unless living in a condo, the only issue is a swimmer needs to find public swimming pools within close range of this neighbourhood for convenience sake. sweat.gif

I love swimming but I rarely get to go swim. Only if I go to the beach or a hotel where they provide a swimming pool. It's been a long time since I swam, I miss it a lot....

I have joint issues since younger age and my knee caps macam very loose and big. Therefore swimming is the only sport that I could do without feeling pain all over the joints. But since MCO, miss swimming at my condo pool. Mgmt said if open pool need follow sop to have lifeguard full time station thr to ensure sop followed.. don't know when only open back. sad.gif

I haven't go to public pool yet so cannot imagine the take turn. You meant like after swim, for a period of time, then climb up to queue so that others can have chance to swim? I am sorry if I sound ridiculous

The private pool I am going , only allows 1 person per lane, and 1 hour per session. Entrance fee also increased to compensate for less people.

I see. How about the control of shower/locker area ? If I remember correctly, that is the only place at pool that is considered risky, not the pool water itself which a lot of people thought it should be

Not suppose to shower, but I was the only one at the swim pool this morning, so they also don't mind.

Ya... the limit the number of people that can enter into pool. And the reduce the session time to about 1 hour including showering time previously is 2 to 2.5 hours. No increase of price though.

Dangerous is when showering as toilet is confine and normally pack during end of session or if you are too close to other swimmer in the pool

too bad swimming pools are closed during MCO, although I disagree with it though.
