I hope ‘customised OS’ means they will use Android TV with operator tier—integrate the Android TV user interface with their existing IPTV interface somehow, or creating a new one, or like what Astro says they’ll do by the end of this year, use a Linux interface and somehow allow installation of Android apps.
So hybrid meaning both IPTV and OTT streaming.
But honestly, the quality should stay the same if they’re using this hybrid box. All they need to do is use the same stream as the white box and you should get the same quality. And there’s that added benefit of being able to install Android TV apps on hopefully a nice-looking user interface.
*
1. If the upcoming UPB uses a Custom Android TV OS. I hope they use a concept like AT&T TV (based on the modified Android TV OS)

2. Hybrid (Satellite mode and IPTV/OTT mode).

Customized OS based on open source platform either Linux or AOSP.
That RDK box does not have any OS so it's up to TM to develop the OS own self or use other vendor to develop including Skyworth's own development team. They still/will can port patner's apps to their platform.
The reason why they are doing this probably due to they will have more control over the OS compare to Android TV Operator-tier..

Not sure why they use the word 'hybrid' but i highly doubt that it has anything to do with satellite and iinm the partnership with Astro is similar to what Astro did with Allo.

If you don't mind, can you share or point me to the source regarding astro's plan to allow android apps installation on their box. Tq.

No, it's still a secret.😌😌😌

Awww man... 😧😩 But that "hybrid" could mean either:

1) OTT + IPTV Multicast
2) OTT + Satellite (DVB-S2) TM plans to launch own satellite TV service, to compete with Astro and the upcoming Sirius TV? 🤨
3) OTT + Terrestrial (DVB-T2) Nah, makes no sense to me.

The current Unifi Plus Box only works in OTT mode, isn't it? (I assume it is technically known as Unicast, similar like Astro's Plug & Play)
Maybe TM wants to provide support for the IPTV Multicast on its upcoming box model, on top of OTT mode? And that's why it is called "hybrid"? 🤔
Still, I'm not sure if TM intends to abandon its IPTV Multicast service and just go focus with its OTT mode or what..... After all, the fibre infra is theirs...

ight imma gonna save money to buy white box even though there's new one.

But if the upcoming so-called "Hybrid" box would allow users to watch the channels via IPTV Multicast (the one that uses VLAN), would you still want that white box? sweat.gif

What does the word hybrid mean?

I think it means iptv + digital tuner.

TM might be dishing it out in remote areas for those without internet.

Satellite? I doubt it.

Errr... I don't think Astro ever plans to allow users to install whatever Android apps they want on its boxes.

It is likely that soon, those streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar all those, will come as a pre-installed on the Astro Ulti / Ultra Box, and I don't think Astro would allow users to uninstall it 🤣

isn't unifi tv already has an OTT mode that has been used on Hypptv for Streamyx since 2013? while Hypptv for Unifi uses IPTV mode

Hmm yea, you can change the settings between "Streamyx" or "Unifi" at the Settings there for the white box.

But is that option available for the current Unifi Plus Box?

Nope. UPB is like the other Android Box. Uses LAN or/and Wifi.

It's a good thing that they have plan to bring Netflix to their platform, but I'm kinda pissed off. Why the hell they cannot provide a "stable" box like the new hybrid one? So we don't need to keep getting a different box everytime they offer something new. I got my first UPB like two months ago as I plan to subscribe to HBO GO, Disney+ Hotstar and TVBAnywhere+ without sticking to Astro.

Both UPB and AT&T TV are using Android TV(Operator Tier).

They don't need to release new box to do the same thing on existing UPB.

Google gave operators enough control/freedom to integrate the app in to the system and it's up to operator to take advantage of it.
TM can make their own launcher with customized UI/UX and replaced the Android TV launcher with it but they didn't took the opportunity to do it instead they made half baked app.

Looks like SpoTV will be a boring sports channel. SpoTV 1 mostly MotoGP, Supercars and some racing, while SpoTV 2 got many Korean sports (football, baseball)... Hmm

As I read somewhere, they say all new channels will be free to view until end of the year, but my Hits Channel (not the movie one) got "youre watching preview"... Others ok to watch, no problem. Is there any one who faces this issue?
