Cap 3 won't be coming to ONYX anytime soon, the Cap 3 shown in our insta story is only a prototype, but the brown switch + Cap 2 is already ready for pre-ordering, we should receive the keyboard next week.
For this, I have to ask whether we can buy the Cap 2 keycap only, i am also afraid of the compatibility of the mechanism with Cap 2, need to check with R&D about this.

Do you have a video of that brown switches cap 2?

Ehh, what happened?
*
Well, right after I received the laptop, among the issues I experienced are:

- Fan boost button does nothing
- Creaking hinges
- Random unresponsive/jittery/lags
- Fan cranking up with no load on any of the cpu/gpu/memory
- Windows starts to BIOS (only after save bios setting can load windows)
- Low battery causing stutter/jagged video playback (issues went away after plugging in power)

I went to Illegear's office in Oval Damansara last month and sent in my laptop for RMA.

Afterward, got reply from Illegear my laptop was diagnosed and confirm the fan boost button was faulty and they might be replacing the motherboard if replacing just the button didn't work.
But since I'm upgrading to 144Hz screen as well, they've been kind to provide a whole new unit as my replacement. Was kinda hoping it would comes with the new Cap 2 but well, that was one wishful thinking.

Now can't wait to get it back.

hmm, is there any way to reduce the fan noise while gaming? anyone tried those suction type cooler ? is it able to cool down the laptop until the degree that the fan doesnt need to be run on full speed.

For the game that I am usually playing, it stresses the CPU way more than the GPU. Three corrective measures that I took after hours of experimenting (using HWInfo app to collect statistics):

1. Using ThrottleStop to disable turbo boost. Somehow the 99% power setting trick is not working with this 8th gen i7 even though it worked in my old laptop with 4th gen i7. The other trick which is modify Win registry to add the option to change boost behavior does not work as well as ThrottleStop. The speed still going to 2.6 GHz (not cool enough) instead of capping at 2.2 GHz. But ThrottleStop effect will be gone after reboot, so have to setup task scheduler to auto-launch it on Win login.

2. In GeForce Control Panel, force my game app to always use High Performance nVidia GPU instead of auto-decide to fallback to Intel GPU. (I think this means we are disabling Optimus for the specific app.)

3. In GeForce Control Panel, force PhysX to use the GTX 1060 instead of CPU (but don't check on the "dedicate to PhysX" checkbox, this is for a different purpose).

With the steps above, I am able to get max CPU temps of 91 degrees instead of 96 previously. By the way, the GPU never goes beyond 78 degrees in the game I am usually playing. I am able to keep playing with 144 Hz refresh rate and not being forced to fallback to the 60 Hz setting.

Hope this helps other owners with same problem as mine.

Update: Found a sweet app named RTSS that can cap my FPS. Despite the FPS number indicator provided by this app doesnt work, I used GeForce overlay for the same purpose to display the FPS at the top corner and verified that the frame rate capping by RTSS tool works at least. Capping it to 100 Hz and hope it helps the cooling and I dont have to endure 60 Hz which is noticeably worse experience for me.

Update 2: I followed this guide to undervolt the "CPU Core" and "CPU Cache" by -80.1mV each with ThrottleStop app (https://www.notebookcheck.net/How-to-Lower-Temperatures-Stop-Throttling-and-Increase-Battery-Life-The-ThrottleStop-Guide-2017.213140.0.html). I didn't undervolt the GPU. Playing the same game at 100 Hz cap with RTSS app, with turbo still disabled, now my peak CPU temps dropped to 83 degrees, and GPU dropped to 72 degrees (I supposed it is because of shared heatpipes even though I didn't undervolt GPU). This is really good so I may consider turning back on turbo boost, and just rely on undervolting to keep it cool.

Update 3: Just forget what I said bout forcing it to use the nVidia GPU including for PhysX. That would severely reduce the minutes you could use this machine unplugged because the GPU would never switch off. The undervolting and power ratio limit setting with ThrottleStop is all you need. Currently, I'm doing -125mV undervolt and enabling turbo up to 3.4GHz for single core, 3.0GHz for duo core, gradually reducing this to 2.2GHz (i.e. no turbo) when all six-cores are used. I've stopped the FPS capping altogether. Max temps currently CPU 82 degrees and GPU 75 degrees (higher than previous because no more FPS capping).

Hi Everyone.

This is not normal?

I'm also experiencing lag/stutters on games and videos if I'm not plugged in. Normally at the lower end of battery power.

You can disable Battery Boost feature so that it won't try to reduce performance to save energy when not plugged.

Take a look at the Edit Power Plan in Windows too. There might be some settings to reduce performance, screen brightness, etc. when unplugged.

You shouldn't be playing any games with battery tho. It won't last more than 1.5 hours. It should be meant for emergency situations.

As mentioned in the website, it is not available for 1060 option. I am guessing it is hotter and there might be some risks with bigger battery.

Based on my own past experience, the battery is one of the first things to be spoiled. My old laptop, one of the reasons I chose it was its 76 Wh battery. However it needs replacement after one year, and its replacement died after another year too. Then for next two years, I been using the laptop without a battery. It is always plugged like a desktop.

I do hope the Onyx is better tho, but the battery is the last thing I want to put my money after those lessons learned.

We need a demo video of the new switches PRONTO!

But yeah, it it really is silent, that sound like a nice upgrade TBH, though you should consider cutting us early adopters a little upgrade discount because we didn't have a choice back then lol... brows.gif

For some reason, the replacement laptop I have now seems to be less clicky than the first one. Keycaps is more matte too. I mean, I would've just go and upgrade the keyboard as soon as they announce if I'm still on my first Onyx this but now I think I'm ok with this new one.

Maybe once in a while if Illegear dropped the price for upgrade, I might be tempted.

@Illegear, need your reply on this.

I noticed that if I plug in 2 usb drive/stick in both USB ports on the right, I will only have 1 plugged in successfully and the other will shown as connecting...disconnecting..connecting...and so on. It is fine when I have one plugged on the right side and one on the left. Mind you this happened while both being on power and battery.

Is this normal? Annoyed me when I found out. Had to moved my mouse's receiver to the right side so can use both usb stick at once.

Hi guys, I wanna ask one thing, did anyone experience this situation with your Onyx?

Your display is turned off and it can't be turned on even if you type something or move the mouse or press the power button.

Any idea?

Happened to me few days ago. Display went black while I was using it. Had to force shutdown by long pressing the power button. Turn it on again and the fan cranked up then windows not responding. Had to force shut down again, restart and it kinda starts ok..

Checked event viewer and there are 12 warnings with this:
The speed of processor (0-11) in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report.

Illegear then sent me Oemsev.exe as according to them since I upgraded my power brick to 180w, need to update Oemsev as current bios not fully stable to use with it. So far the issue hasn't recurring.

Does anybody's Onyx charges from 99% to 100% after turning on the computer from shut down despite using the laptop plugged in prior to the shutdown and the battery is 100% before shut down?

It also takes about 15-20 minutes to charge that last 1%.
