I just got the Phantom L! I'm about to get some cheapo pbt keycaps from Lazada for it just because I really hate the current fonts lol. From my research I think only cherry and dsa profiles will be suitable for this one.

Nice! the pbt keycaps really very affordable! but they are not the slim kind like the one on Phantom L right? I hate the font too.. thats the only thing that holds me back from getting them at the moment.

your reference is gmk honeywell. with a good budget, you will get them for sure. (edit: i mean gmk sets like them lol)
tecware boards are 'highly recommended', mainly because it's the closest thing that can fit to the budget of most people. it also has potentials to be tuned to certain extents by beginners.

low-profile switches still needs time to be popular, to create opportunities and confidence for manufacturers to invest on the right tools to mass-produce things like key caps for them.  until then, options for replacement key caps will be limited.

as for compatibility, due to different implementations from manufacturers, and different designs of stems in certain low-profile switches and stabilizers, it's better to do more research first.

Ic. thanks for sharing... I did a bit of research and seems like it is quite difficult to find any low profile keycap that can work with it... unsure.gif

Nope. These low profile keycaps are unique to this keyboard afaik. Hence, referring to the more popular profiles below, cherry and dsa are the lowest and more likely to fit. I'll update once I get the keycaps! Just ordered today.

Thanks for the diagram. So the one u ordered from Lazada is the normal Cherry keycap or the DSA? I have the Durgod keyboard with doubleshot pbt keycap... not sure if I can direct swap the keys with the one on the phantom L. tongue.gif , but letterings will not light up.

They should be cherry profile, but I'll reconfirm once I get them! Since they're only $18 its worth a shot.

I'm totally new in this MKB field & i'm exploring to get an entry level one.

May I know where can I visit to try out a demo set first? Because I prefer buttons that aren't too loud so that I don't annoy other people in office. I saw from the 1st post sharing location details for: Filco, Razer, Ducky & Armageddon. Are those still considered entry level since it's been 2 years? Are there any other places for me to go try out?

I tried in store before, and I do like the typing feel of the low profile ...looks+feel really premium in person too.. Is just too expensive for something that I wouldnt able to even swap the keycap.. since the keycap is plastic abs... and will result in glossy keycap after a long run...(Very annoying for me) tongue.gif It is "Almost" the keyboard im looking for tbh. Wireless, lowprofile with rgb.

have those switch films arrived? would like to know your opinions on the mods

Just an update. TX films are in Malaysia, so I should get them any day now. Aliexpress stickers still in transit somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle.

But I 'assembled' my board anyway without soldering. Whoa! Very nice sound. Very close to the thock I'm looking for. Kinda like https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvSuMLM3grY except mine is slightly higher pitched.

Here it is on my lap. Crotch portion has been cropped out so everyone can keep their breakfast.
Attached Image

So since it was not soldered, I tried it without the foam between plate and PCB. My god the sound is so harsh in comparison! I don't remember if the stock board sounded like that, it's been like 2 months since I desoldered this board and embarked on my mod journey.

The foam in the bottom case on the other hand....almost no difference with or without it. It's still not finished though. I still have 5-7 pieces to cut out.

Edit: forgot to add, my 'perfect' sounding stabs now sound bad to me. I guess since the foam cut out most other sound, it is now noticeable. It was already factory lubed. Will try to relube and see. Or maybe I will hunt around for genuine Cherry plate mount stabs. So far I can only find them in stock at Zeal.

finally lol

now you know how crappy it is at stock configurations. with love and care, the sound and feel have changed to the much better ones smile.gif that's why mods must be done to get most of the real potentials out from any stock board.

correct, foam in the bottom case helps only a little, if you compared to mods like switch lubing and plate foam. to be fair, these effects are stacked so we include it also.

as for stabs, 2u should be ok, while the one for space bar is usually causing issues. 90% of the times, they can be fixed by clipping and lubing accordingly. you should check if the wire can lay flat on a flat surface.

for genuine cherry plate-mount stabs, i'm not sure. it might need to dig a bit at taobao/aliexpress. (i believe they have it but not sure which shops are selling it)

for me, those anti slip mod in the bottom case(the only mods i did on stock boards, since ayam scared to desolder switches) does makes a diff. makes typing feels more solid. less flex maybe?

but can agree with horns saying its the least significant mods comparing to others. but it is also the least one needs to do for mods except disassembling the board.

It makes a difference if there's no other mods done, but when you compare "foam between plate and PCB" and "foam between PCB and case", the difference with and without foam between the plate and PCB is larger. Of course, as with all mods with keyboards, there's no single recipe, it's always case per case basis (pun unintended), some cases produce more ping and thus requires foam to tame them, some cases are well built and fit together so well there's very little hollow sound hence the marginal difference.

yes, it's like what GRexer pointed out, per-case basis, depending on board's construction. there is no guarantee that it will work well for any board.

it's still part of my basic mods for my custom builds hehe i just apply it to make sure nothing is left behind, even though there is no such needs.

Yeah they are being sold on Taobao/Aliexpress. But no one has stock. You'd go to the listing and select the options and see OEM and Cherry but Cherry is greyed out.

At this point, I'm going to complete the foam for my bottom case just for bragging rights. My prebuilt is fully pimped out yo!

I actually went to Digital Mall yesterday to look for demo set to try. Managed to try 1 only cause not many available. And i don't even know what i'm trying lol. Seems like their online business is so good, they're neglecting offline customers sweat.gif

So if i'm looking for a quiet switch, not clicky i guess, what should I be looking for? Especially for entry level ones. Possible if the switches are short? Low profile i think is the term for it.
