1NIH The NIH aims to be Malaysia’s first integrated research complex with state-of-the-art facilities comparable to centers in Singapore and the Unites States. Spread over a 40-acre piece of land in Setia Alam, the complex consists of 6 distinct research institutes, connected via carefully considered pedestrian linkages. The master plan takes cues from its immediate context through an embryonic gesture, evolving almost organically by reacting to a process of interaction. The intention is to constantly challenge the limits of a campus environment and to reinvent the DNA of an essential component of the government, the Ministry of Health (MOH).
Below the main canopy, a strong visual line connects the front entrance to the rear via the courtyard garden. From the lobby of the curved administrative block, a tubular volume created by the circular structure of the shared facilities funnels light on to a concentrated body of water. This pool tails off by making its way to the furthest block of the IMR (Institute of Medical Research) doubling as a natural surface water drainage. In parallel, a path allows visitors and staff to fully indulge in the gardens within. The chain of 5 research blocks flank the south edge of this courtyard ranging between 5 to 9 stories in height. Each reveals a telling story of what seems to be a random series of punctured voids, which with a closer look relay evidence of the slow evolution process. To the north of the site, the shared facilities block provides a network of amenities including 3 auditoriums, a multipurpose hall, a library, canteen and various meeting facilities, all fully linked and accessible within a convenient 2 minute walk. Location Setia Alam Client Ministry of Health Size 40 Acres Status Expected Completion 2016 Type Current
