Job Title : Software Specialist/Consultant
Job Desciption : Glorified support/Trainer
Age : 31
Years spent in company : 9years for an Australian company, about to start for an international company
Company : Software
Industry : IT
Tenure : -
Employment Level : -
Experience before joining (years) : 9.5
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Bachelors
Location : Malaysia
Average Working Hours Per Week (incl lunch hours): 50-60

Monetary Payout
Basic Salary + Fixed Allowance : SGD6000 (I’m considered a “contractor” so I need to pay for my own Taxes and EPF out of my own salary)
Contractual Bonus (months): None
Performance, Variable Bonus & Commissions (months) : Determined at end of Financial Year

Benefits (where relevant) :
Health Benefits : -
Transport Benefits : Work travel expenses all covered.
Mobile / Internet / Gadget Benefits : Computers and home internet paid for by company
Flexi hours: Yes, work as required, 8 hours a day.
Other Benefits : Work from home in Malaysia. 30 days per year Paid time off, with no Public holidays (Use PTO for public holidays as I like). This is something I requested as I don’t like having time off with everyone else, traffic and all, and prefer to have flexibility as to when I get time off.

Was a product manager for the Australian Branch out of Uni before I quit after 9.5 years to move back to Malaysia for some travelling. Whilst home, was contacted by the International head office to assist with their very young SE Asia team (3 staff 6-12 month exp) with me working from home in Malaysia.

Upside: Get to spend some time at home with my parents, getting a “low/mid level expat pay” while being a local.
Downside: Quality of life and having to readjust to life in Malaysia after 10+ years away.

Still sitting on the offer, they are being very patient with me while i make my decision.
*
Getting to spend time with parents while still earning money is a luxury that not many can afford. And it is something to me that money cannot buy.

It might be difficult adjusting to life back in Malaysia, but it will be fine after a while.

Don't stay too long on your first job, as a result of that your pay will become stagnant. Try to explore the job market outside, you will definitely gain from the monetary and job experience standpoint.

Haven't really scouting for other jobs, because yeah, I am currently really fine with zero stress life right now. My superior is totally fine, he is another reason I am comfortable here. However, he didn't have authority to promote me higher in terms of pay due to management restrictions.
If I were to leave this company to another place, I would look minimum rm 1k pay jump minimum to justify the distance.

Money is not everything, but everything needs money hahahaha..

Seems like you are in a comfort zone now, try exploring the outside world, you are at your golden age man, don't let it go to waste.

Though I've always felt that I'm a bit underpaid. Is this the case for most management traines?

Yeah I think the salary is about right. The benefits that you are getting are pretty good too. I hope the company you are in has a fast track program for management trainees, like some banks do.

It's more of an ad hoc sort of programme. It was something seemingly put togrther in a hurry and all it has is a rotation around the bank here and there only
*
Some banks really value management trainee highly as they are the ones who trained them up, career progression will be faster if you are in one of those banks.

But that's quite rare, I'm in my early thirties and I think most people I know are in the 5-15k range. I heard that Big 4 if you don't make partner it's pretty bad also, director level also around 15k sadly....

From here do you have any higher to go? From the salary surveys I see, many CFO's pay would be around your current range also.
*
In my opinion working level position can only go that high, once you reach the ceiling it is either you move to management level to command higher salary, or remain stagnant at that salary range.

Yeah I meant the general population who are stuck at the salary range of 5-15k as per what you have described above.

Yeah not many companies can offer such salary. But with enough research in the market, you can potentially identify those who can.

hmm.gif Good point. But gonna be hard unless I find jobs outside of Malaysia
Mostly about 1k - 2k depending on year. There was some years which I was lucky to get multiple increments (merit increments, promotions, or special increment) so these stacked up quite rapidly.  But things have pretty much normalised now
*
If you have to move to another country to find your next job then you have officially hit the ceiling here in malaysia.

I guess this is the common challenge for all IT professionals out there.
It's just because he is too specialize in a particular niche, when he apply else where, no employer can giving him the package that higher than his current one.
If hes really tired of what hes doing now, and he die die want to move, be ready for a pay cut
*
Yeah the keyword here is niche, if the industry is so small with only that few players, it will be difficult to get the next job.

For 4 years of experience in project management, I think you are not doing too bad in terms of salary. May I ask what made you get the PSM cert? That cert does not seem to be widely recognized.
