QUOTE(Wan2BeAnonymous @ Sep 23 2020, 07:44 PM)
Hi guys, I am looking at a new job opportunity right now.

I am being asked for expected salary and I really don't know how to answer this.

It is like a total field change for me, (from software to hardware) but my Degree fits the job position though.

Is asking 20% acceptable? Or there is room for more?

Or should I just ask for more since they are going to nego me later too?

Does expecting high increment cause the job offer to be withdrawn?

Thanks in advanced guys, it is like a new chapter for me in my life.
*
For me I always put a higher expected salary to leave some room for negotiation. Example if the minimum I can accept is 30% I will give 40%.

If they do nego then it is still fine, if they don't even better. But if they decided not to proceed with my application I will just look for another opportunity.

If they really value you and want you in their team they will choose to negotiate with you instead of turning you down straight away.

This is my experience. For reference only as the situation may differ from person to person.

Remember, most people that post their detail here can't back up their numbers  whistling.gif
I will tell you to use a trick called anchoring. I've yet to move jobs for anything less than a 40% +-, and that is because I proposition the new pay based on my total compensation and add in a premium to that. That way, you anchor the discussion at a higher figure, and even if its negotiated, it is much easier to control the downtrend then to control the uptrend.

The company will have a budget for the position, and a high increment might make you less suitable. However, if they give you a bad increment, is it worth the jump?

So, have a "die die" figure in your mind, a number that if it went anything below, you will walk away from. Then you propose something much higher and negotiate from there.
*
Yeah I totally agree on this. Normally the figure will downtrend instead of going uptrend after you have provided your expected salary. As you said, companies always have a budget in mind when they are doing the hiring and they will most likely to stick to their agreed budget.

Just curious, what is the rule of thumb for salary increment on a new job in IT?
*
30% is a good start. Sometimes I put higher to leave room for negotiation.

30% is easy to get in current market?

hmm.gif
*
Not sure about now. But 1 year ago when I was looking out this seems to be the standard.

When including my salary in my CV, do I include the word "(Negotiable)" beside the salary or is it like an unspoken rule where all expected salaries are negotiable unless stated?
*
Do you now have to include your salary in your CV though? I don't think it is necessary.

Why not? If i"m interviewer and the expected salary over the budget, better no need waste each other time.
*
I think the sole purpose of having a CV is to present my professional skills and experience to the hiring team, which is why I think the expected salary is unnecessary in the early stage. It may get you filtered out by HR without even reaching the hiring manager. Some hiring manager may want to hire you despite you commanding a higher salary. But getting filtered out by HR during the early stages eliminates any chance of doing so.

I've met some hiring manager that opens up with an offer without asking my current salary. If you put in the expected salary in your CV you do not have room for negotiation.

Just my 2 cents.

I guess at the age of 32, it's still not late to jump?
*
Have you hopped prior to this? If this is your first company and you have been working in the same company since graduation, job change might be daunting cause you will need to adapt to a whole new environment which is totally new to you.

Hi guys, bonus is soon. Wonder which way would u guys choose.

1) wait for bonus (don't know how much would be, can be 0.5 to 2), then only start to find new companies and jump ship.

2) no wait for bonus and got offer 40% with current salary on the new company, which is a MNC. (currently where I working is not MNC).
*
I would wait for bonus. I went with option 2 before and regretted it a lot. Just time your resignation better and you can get the best of both worlds.

I have around 10 years experience in IT and based on my observation on my peers:

1. Average performer in small company: 5-7k
2. Good performer in small company: 6-10k
3. Average performer in big company: 7-12k
4. Good performer in big company: 10-20k
5. Job hopper every few years: 8-14k

I think this is pretty on point. I myself am in the IT field too and have close to 10 years of experience.

U working for daddy's company or u earning USD? I know its possible to get that salary if u earning USD working for foreign company.

But weird usually high rank IT position not senior manager. Mostly is like head of xxxx department, CIO, CTO, CDO, architect etc.

Impossible to get this kind of pay working as a salary man in malaysia at that age in my opinion..

My regional head office is also located in Singapore and I have access to our internal salary bands since I've just applied for a recent vacancy in our SG office.

The equivalent compa-ratio as per our salary bands for 10k MYR is around 7k SGD. From what I can research online the typical ratio for MYR:SGD conversion is around 0.7-0.8x, i.e. effectively doubling your nett pay after MYR conversion (10k after employer EPF contribution -> 20k take home after tax). 1:1 conversions are typically only done at <5k salaries.

From what I can see on MyCareersFuture, 10k SGD is managerial level salary and IMO too optimistic a goal at your age/experience.

Thanks this is a good information for those who wants to transfer to SG

That is a very good package. Just wondering if the 13th month salary is applicable to everyone in your company? or this is something that you have negotiated with the employer?
