Why in an organisation, same level position but different salary ya?
In my company  all of us has differ salary range despite same level position? Even managers and between managers also different salary range. I'm quite shock with that. Same experience, different salary range. Why this happen among hiring company?
*
Yes I do agree that it is normal. However there is a certain pay ceiling for same level position, not sure about your company but my company has that.

Nothing to jelly about. Because I just received my tax bill a couple of days ago, and I'm suddenly feeling decidedly poor:

[attachmentid=10515201]

Last year was quite a good year, financially speaking, for the practice. But, this year, with COVID-19 disrupting my foreign patients from ASEAN countries, the income will be dramatically reduced.

At least I know by posting these facts here in this forum, there won't be the usual butthurt and jealous comments by the forum members, unlike that which I've seen occur in /kopitiam and even /serious kopitiam.

But, life is like that, isn't it? You work hard, you get paid well, but you also end up paying the taxes accordingly.
*
Singapore has a lower tax rate as compared to Malaysia right?

Got a low increment in 2020, feel triggered, unappreciated and resigned.

New job
Job Title : Consultant
Job Description : Life Insurance
Age : 29
Years spent in company : starting in Aug 2020
Company : Consulting firm
Industry : Insurance
Employment Level : Consultant
Experience before joining : N/A
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Fellowship
Salary : 16k
Bonus : 2.4m

This is actually the lowest offer I got (~5% on annual basis), however I have other plan in mind with this particular firm.

Highest offer I have is ~25% on annual basis, however I feel limited future growth there.
*
Can you describe more on what you will be doing in a new job?

Getting 10k+ before age 30 is not the norm but not unusual. I know a few friends/relatives who achieved this.
*
It's pretty normal I would say. With the right skillset + luck, you can get that kind of salary by 30.

Amazing. You guys are earning a lot at such young age. By the way, do you guys always job hopping to seek for better increment?  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif
*
It’s the fastest way to get good increment. Staying in the same company may or may not get you far in terms of increment goes.

Thats true but sometimes its pretty hard to adapt the new working environment. It's even more challenging when you are expected to learn new things from scratch. A friend of mine did accept a new job offer not long ago, with good increment but the thing was he needed to learn lots of new things whereas his previous job experience wasn't contribute much or i can say non related to his new job. I can see how stressful he is.  sad.gif
*
It is always a risk by jumping into a new job/role/environment, that 'increment' that we are getting is for the risk that we are taking accepting the new job.

To be honest, the next couple of years will be tough for any new graduate - unless a vaccine is found and a peaceful reset of the state of the global economy occurs. But it’s no different to what some of the other people have faced in their own right - I graduated as the Asian Financial Crisis was brewing, lived through the SARS induced recession, then endured the shockwaves of the Lehman default and am now faced with the threat of a virus-driven global recession.

If my grandpa were still alive today, he’d say “well, I lived through 2 world wars and ate tapioca to survive”. Hard to argue with that perspective.

We will all face our personal challenges - and we will all, through hard work, self belief and sheer stubborn determination, overcome every challenge.
*
Very well said. Yes it will be tough especially in the job market in the next couple of years, from what we are seeing now, it will take some time for the economy to recover.

Yes, job hopping has increased my salary tremendously. If I had stayed at my old company, I won't even be able to buy my own house.

I've been getting shitty 3% for increment before I decided to jump. Some sectors pay peanuts.
*
Last year I only got 2% increment lol imagine that.

Given what we’ve seen this year, we should be thankful that there’s been no pay cuts. Or even more grateful that we still have a job!

Yeah but this was last year before the pandemic...Now like you said, I am just happy I still have a job.

If u are complacent and in your comfort zone, then 2%-3% is standard.

But if you perform above 100% and stay back quite often, then 2%-3% is total bullshit. There are people who are lazy and go back sharp at 5.30pm who also received similar amount.

So I hopped, got a 38% increase and never looked back. The former boss can go to hell.
*
In our company, even if you perform above 100%, you need to get 'noticed' to be able to get the above average pay increment, so too bad for people like me.

Usually, with more pay comes more responsibilities - at least, that is the way most promotions and increments work
*
Yeah that is not the case for me too. The company I jumped too has lesser workload with 40% increment. I guess at the end of the day it all comes down to luck and the company culture.

I just consider myself really lucky. The company was just looking to expand and they wanted to fill up the headcount as soon as possible that is why I got the room to negotiate a better salary.

The work from home is a good benefit. The pay is quite competitive. I assume your work is not really impacted by Covid then, given the nature of the job itself.

Yes it affects everyone. For me I am just grateful to still have a job at times like this, not complaining.

It seems like you have a good career and you genuinely like what you are doing now. I will not worry too much about the pay.

In general for software engineer, ppl always aim for FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google - it changes from time to time) because the pay, benefits and perceived prestige(you might really end up only fixing button size on Google map or Google Autos as an engineer but because of those name on ur cv, it generally open up all SWE job anywhere in the world)

FAANG doesn’t really care about ur education level. A good portion of engineer here does even have a bachelor. They just go for boot camp, ace the interview and get in with the pay of 180k+- at L3. IMHO, as long as you are a competitive programmer (good in a sense of as good as top Regional level ACM-icpc competitive programming Participant preferably :-/ i am no where near that haha), then you should be able to get in easily. Because all this FAANG set up 6 - 7 rounds of pure technical algorithm interview for no matter what ur level is(yes even if you have 10 to 15 YOE, you will do the same technical interview like everyone, but with extra focus on system design).

Erm... I did my bachelor degree in Malaysia, got lucky and being awarded a scholarship by Australia Government to do a PhD in Sydney. All my PhD mates here applied to Google and Facebook in US, so Haha due to Peer pressure and I just ended up doing the same. Interview at Google Sydney, got the offer and they asked if I want to transfer to Google Singapore or SV. And that’s how I got in

It is always nice to hear about these experience sharing in the forum. Do you plan to stay in the states long term?
