hi all

i'm considering of getting a new lappy nx month, budget around rm6k, have been doin research on two brands, sony and dell, and 've spotted two particular models:-

1. sony VGN-SZ433N/B using intel T5600

2. dell latitude D420 using intel U2500

i know the batt life of a system which running on U based processor can last up to a whopping 11hours, anyway this is not my main concern, in fact, i'm more worry about their quality, durability & material....

sony & dell, which one better?

anyone who have experiences with sony and dell, kindly drop me a line or two, thanks a ton!!

Hmm... from your list I'd say...

1. Asus G1s (If you can push your budget that high, and bare the extra weight - RM6988 - it's the perfect lappy)
2. Lenevo/IBM R61 (they're having a promotion or something last I checked - RM4800++, not bad for it's specs)
3. BenQ S41 (Great graphics for the price)
4. Asus A8Sc (Hey, it's an Asus! And santa rosa + 8400m to boot)
5. Dell XPS M1330 (If you can wait a few more months)
6. Dell XPS M1210 (If you cant...)
7. HP DV2523TX, DV2505TX (Nice design)
8. Compaq V3505-09TU (Cheap)
.
.
.
100. Sony Vaio SZ (Not worth the money... The SZ44 especially)

Just my 0.02 sens... icon_rolleyes.gif

I myself am planning to get a G1s or G2s (hopefully a G2s lol). Although if I wanted a 14" screen I would've gone for the Benq S41. Have heard alot of good reviews about it - but 14" is just not as fun as a 17" tongue.gif

The Acer Gemstone aka Aspire 5920G caught my eye as well but more people seem to vote for the ASUS G1s in terms of laptop quality.

Well compare Gemstone to Asus G1s, surely Asus is more suprior in sense of performance, graphic, resolution and weigth. Performance higher Processor/Ram. Graphic memory is using DDR3 on Asus while Acer is still DDR2, Resolution on Asus is much higher. Acer is 3.16kg to be exact with batt on very heavy oh for BF to carry as well.

15" wide & 17" are suitable for desktop replacement, having hard time with Acer 8204 on my lap or moving it around.. just too much hassle. sweat.gif

Acer is *bad* vmad.gif , my 8204 is decoloring, keyboard button start to 'uneven' just slightly over a year, considering the price I paid, just not worth it. Luckily its performance is good.

I guess if you're buying an Acer, it's because you want performance for cheap. The old adage of "What you pay for is what you get" remains true I guess.

The Asus G1 is of course the much better choice in terms of build quality and even a little performance boost....... but if if you see the price difference..... from about RM6899 to RM4499 is ALOT of difference...... Alot of us here can't fork out RM7000 just for a laptop..... Me included.....

The Gemstone has roughly similar specs, and most importantly the same graphics card, has definitely more bang for your buck. The S41 isn't bad (as it's just an 8600GS compared with the GT), but if you're planning to upgrade to Vista, it'll come up to roughly the same price also....... but then again you might prefer a lighter and smaller screen.....

For gamers "on a budget", the Gemstone still looks like the most attractive.

And of Acer quality, I guess it's a matter of luck. I'm using this Acer TravelMate 2410 for nearly 2 years and (touch wood), still runs just fine, and I lug it to university and now my intern job quite alot. Once used for some semi-pro audio recording and it worked quite well actually.
