75 mm....
or.
Gumballs 76mm
Strikers 77mm
Flywheels 76, 83, 90, 97

I assume that for a loosely set giant or a Super G even larger wheels would be an advantage.

In my opinion, there should be very little rules along these lines. Simple is good. Otherwise you open up all sorts of problems (and you limit progress in design experimentation.) Plus there would be too much time wasted on measuring and protesting.

Sorry to off-topic this thread, but my sister been bugging me to buy her a pair of beginner-ish in-line skates ... what kind of "damage" to my wallet would I be looking at (I have no idea how much skates cost)? And where to go and buy? Is that skateline place the best? Any recommended brands? Do I also need to get her a full set of protective gear?

Thanks ya!

don't buy those really lousy skates, can turn out to be really horrible @_@
try asking the shop manager there, they'll tell you about it. normally those 'OK' skates would range around RM300-500?
the studio-R at KLCC are also selling skates, but i don't know if its good or not, think its skorpion brand, try google it.
you don't have to buy the full protective gear unless she will be skating on roads and stuff.

OK so conclusion is go to that TTDI shop, tell the boss "ok boss, I have a rm300 budget for a pair of beginner skates, what can I buy?" <-- like this?

Just out of curiosity (cos I honestly was shocked that even beginner skates cost that much), what kind of prices do you guys pay for your "pro" skates?

u need to push out the spacer then only can take out the bearings..
best to buy a new set of bearings in Cool elements (Rm 18) for Abec 7
very cheap and reliable

Umm... lol

I wanna learn inline skating so... yeah blush.gif

Is it possible to get inline skates here in Kuching?

If no, are there any suggestions for skates, preferably freestyle, so I can look them up when I go to KL?

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I'm just starting to learn the whole thing blush.gif

Thx a bunch.

Are wheels cheaper in Singapore?

For slalom, you have to get Freestyle skates.

Aggressive inline skates are for grinding (e.g. jump up and slide across the ledge / rail) =D Higher risk of injuries.

Some freestyle skates I know are from Radius, Adreno (Black Series), Roces (SKT...), Micro Seba (FR1, FR2, High, High Deluxe), Rollerblade (Twister).

Generally, the freestyle skates have a hard boot. Those recreational ones (cheaper) are more cloth-like material. Also the frame (the part under the boot that holds the wheels together) for freestyle is metal, usually aluminum. The recreational ones are plastic type.

You can try approaching people who are slalom-ing for recommendations, or ask places like skateline, etc. (: Some will be helpful, some will be not, hahaha.

If you want to do slalom, look for one that has rocker wheel setup, that is the front and back wheels are slightly smaller than the two wheels at the center, this will make it easier to turn.

rocker setup's not really a must.
it turns out that if you keep doing slalom skills, it tends to rocker naturally biggrin.gif
so if you dont have money, you can just do it yourself!

so anyone still up for skating together?

bt d good ones ther are 6-8 sg...
of cos there are more expensive ones...

in malaysia solid price rm25... unless promotion rm16
dis is frm skateline lar...
if u guys/gals can find cheaper wheels plz tell me...

haly: y dun u plan a skate day or something ... thn c any1 respone to it ...
i can try promote in my campus for u ><

you guys wanna try street skating in KL area?
bukit bintang maybe, to get the skating scene going? biggrin.gif

not adviced to spin whenever you just ate tongue.gif
i dont see the problem with spinning though,
normally whenever i do a long spin i'll be dizzy for a few seconds, its bearable but ofcourse we rather drop and lie on the floor right biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

laugh.gif I started with flat setup initially. Then I switched over to rocker, and realised it was much easier (and somehow a little less stable when skating, keke)

for "strolling", 80mm would do just fine... but if you want to do something in between 'extreme" and "strolling", smaller size,.. like 64mm (road wheel) is good. using small wheel like the one they use for extreme is only suitable for park. and its dangerous to use on the road.. u can trip easilly over a small stone or even pebbles. Where by using bigger wheel like 75mm above, it wouldnt allow you to do some simple stunt like grinding....

anyways, about skating on the roads in KL... not advisable, u know la traffic and drivers all crazy one. But during CNY, Skateline and some of the guys who learn skating from there will organise a skate session down town KL as the traffic is not heavy at all. some guys also play inline hockey tongue.gif
ehheeh gonna start promoting inline hockey soon lol!!! nola joking... I do play and on ice as well so yeah its good to know more ppl are getting into skating. Keep it up guys!!

last time i play inline hockey was more than 5 years ago. Back then all the "bladders" were into extreme aka aggressive skating... we played for a few times.. but didnt catch on. Back then, there was no infarastructure for that game. if we want to play hockey, we play in a building parking lot.. hehe.. got chased a lot by security guard.. so everybody stick to aggressive.. no slalom that time... the only slalomer that time were people on roller skate..

That was in sabah la... i dont know in east malaysia here... ( hehe.. a stroll down memory lane)

If you do slalom only, then I guess its okay to get more expensive wheels.

But if you slide as well... $$ cry.gif $$ so have to use cheap wheels. tongue.gif

Yes.. still need those.. plese let me know the price too... not using it for slalom. cause i dont do slalom. I'm somewhere in between an aggressive and skating for leisure. most of the action will be spontaneous.. mostly on the street... and yes..of course..a lot of sliding...

thats the point of getting cheap wheels...hehe... and getting harder wheel (road wheels).. the riding would be so smooth... but it'll help save money if you skate a lot on the pavement.... the small pebbles on the pavement can chip chunk off your expensive wheel...hehe...

exactly what i mean... if you get those Pavement (road) wheel... you dont need to change your wheel many times.. i used to use those expensive wheel last time... but it dont last long... hehe.. cause unlike most of you guys... i use my inline to go to the park (skate from home to the park..)...

after using the road wheel i dont have to change the wheel so often... and it last longer... and the best thing is.. its cheaper...hehe

Hey, I PM-ed you. But just in case the PM goes missing again...

Anyway, I've got two of the Rollerblade wheels already, but I haven't used them yet. What is your email, I can send the photo to you. 72mm, hardness is 78A, it costs S$3, which is about RM7+.

You sure you want me to mail it over? Because the mail may get lost. Maybe its better for you to get yourself if you come to Singapore for a holiday (or know anyone who come down). Registered mail is quite expensive, may not be worth the money...

benbeaninc: actually if you do a variety of slides (using both sides of skates), then no need to change (:

[edit]

benbeaninc: I'm in Singapore (; Seba cones are SGD$1.50 each, there should be yellow and orange colour.

rnl9920: I can as many as you want, but you have to see whether its worth it to mail across (as compared to just buying from your local shop), because the safest way is by registered mail... Anyway, I haven't tried the two that I bought for myself, haha.

Not to offend you, but I thnk you should get a better attitude towards skating. Just like any other sport or even things in life.

No one is a good skater from the start. Sure, some may be more talented and improve faster than others, but at the end of the day, its the effort that counts. Its the effort that makes a difference.

Take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0NIDVJWo0U&fmt=18

She is world number 1, and she trained over 12 hours a day. Even when she couldn't walk because of blisters filled with blood under her feet, her father carried her to her training place. Even when she fell and broke her teeth, she continued.

http://www.pxnews.cn/Show.aspx?ID=13983

This is life, if you try hard enough, you may one day make it. If you just give excuses and not try at all, then you'll definitely not make it.

I've had my fair share of bad days and injuries, I have friends who ended up in the hospital from skate accidents. But we don't hang up our skates and call it a day. We keep going. That's the spirit you should have, if you want to skate. Else, don't even bother, the skates will just be a waste of your money and time. It'll be like buying a car but not learning how to drive because you think your reflexes are not fast enough.

You can actually just keep T-braking on the front and back wheels.

Or just T-brake on all the wheels on one side of the skate, then move two over to rocker the wheels (:

Better still, slide! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mg7Y7GrC_Gc

Just FYI, Rollerblade is a brand. The skates are called inline skates. ;D

And to elaborate more, you can choose from recreational skates or freestyle skates.

Recre ones are like those from K2, they have more fabric and less support for the ankle, and usually have softer wheels (wear out faster)
Freestyle ones are like those from Seba, they are more hard-wearing, people use them for slides and slalom, and they are hard boot.

Brands like Rollerblade deal mostly with recre skates, but also have freestyle, like the Rollerblade Twisters.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask (:

Yes, its called hvper, located next to the 7-11 at East Coast Park.

They do sell Gyro wheels, its about S$12 (each) for the F2R, which is around RM28? I'm not sure about the rest though.

I believe there will be people selling their wheels (won from competition, etc) at cheaper prices though.

You can try Inline Culture or Skateline, although I'm not exactly sure which brands they carry.

http://inlineculture.com.sg/RetailLocation.htm
http://skateline.tzin.net/article/view/Ska...s20080324.rails (for Malaysia its http://www.skateline.com.my/store.php)

These two are the more well-known shops, and they're all at East Coast Park (=

FYI: its called inline skates not rollarblade(it ia a brand)

big wheels mostly for speed-> speed skate
if the skates look like a boot-> aggressive(yes the wheels are way way smaller -56mm)

if u reli duno wat u wan thn u better get recreational skates...
skateline event(s) any skate will do as long it is a skate...

Hope my reply isn't too late...

You should look out for things like a metal frame (the thing underneath the feet that holds onto the wheels), good buckles that feel durable, and of course good fit for your feet.

I'd recommend the Adreno Black Series (which is a basic freestyle skate), even if you're just a recreational skater. Having tried (and seen people try) both recreational skates and freestyle skates, I'd say the freestyle skate gives alot more support and are wayyy easier to learn skating in.

Recreational skates tend to have less support, allowing too much flex at the ankle area, and in some cases, the frames looked as if they were going to break off from the boot.

Do note, the Black Series has problems of the cuff screw coming off after some time. Other than that, it feels like a good general purpose skate.

I'm sorry JY, but I dont agree with you on WHO STARTED inline skating in Malaysia.... well credit goes to Skateline because without the company presence and that kinda sparked back the sport back into life and well, quite grateful it did if not, well u can imagine it will still be kinda underground.

Bichai87,

I only can answer No. 1 question and the rest I'm no expert in this discipline of inline skating (slalom or freestyle)

1. It was way back in 1993 or 94 when the movie The Mighty Ducks (based on the NHL team Anaheim Ducks) landed to M'sia and it was an instance HIT among the adolescences.. 10- 18 years of age.. this spurred the main thing which is inline hockey and the rest followed like aggressive skating or street. Back then, there was no free style or slalom. Inline skating then was recognised by MPPJ and if not mistaken was supported as well. Aggressive skating didnt do as well but there was a fun box and some other stuff back then at PJ Arena Old Town, which now has a half pipe and some other stuff.. and the public perceived it as a "gang" thing or some sort of bad influence to kids. Yeah I was one of them and got chased around by guards in car parks LOL!!

then came Astro and ESPN and TADA!!! X-games was here and it was like wwaaaahhhhh everyone wanted to get a piece of this sport (well not everyone la)

Also back then skateboarding was the in thing and 4 wheelers and 8wheelers are quite close and no rivalry, back then underground mah!! and all friends so no friction there smile.gif

Cut long story short, i think few years later there was no support whatsoeva and the sport just died and due to some in fighting "politics" in the sport.

back to the present, the KJrollers are still around doing their aggressive skating, inline hockey is also here and slalom not sure but from what I read in here its growing and its good to see it progress rclxms.gif

So bichai87, sorry if its too long but thats the background story of inline skating in a nutshell.

Oh ya forgot to add, there were other movies... I remember one called Airborne, quite a few stars then, even jack black was in there smile.gif and the 90's the era of Chris Edwards, godfather of aggressive skating.

Rocker basically means that there are different sizes of wheels on your skates.

For example, the Banana Rocker means smaller wheels on the front and back, while larger ones in the middle, which resembles a banana. Hence the term Banana used.

some like parallel, some like others(example T-brake, powerslide...)...

search "inline skate rocker"
I like this and one more for the example given:

wiki inline skate rocker

Rocker definition

basically, what you want is to imitate the curve on an ice skate as explained in the site above.

Hello bros.... actually i'm in the same group project with bichai87~~
sweat.gif (actually i'm a bit nervous here because it's the first time for me to interview through forum; so, if there's something wrong with my grammar or somethingelse just let me know ya~~~ brows.gif )

Well let me introduce myself first:
I'm Lauw Wijaya Y, from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology
Doing my B.A [Hons] in Industrial Design

First of all, we want to say "Thanks" to all of you~~~ Thanks for your cooperations...
we got all the information more than we've predicted before ^___^

Here are some more detail question about Penang Competition which was held in Queensbay (if i weren't mistaken biggrin.gif ).
1. How many participants during that day? Then who is the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd winners of that competition?
2. Would you mind to tell us a bit technical information about this competition? (I mean the detail of its place, time, judge, etc)
3. How about the awarding ceremony inside it? Is there any special ceremony? Did it used podium to celebrate the winners? and What are the awards for all the winners?
4. Would you mind to let us see some photos about that competition? (actually we've got it from googling, but maybe we can get more "exclusive pictures" about this competition brows.gif )

We will highly appreciated all of your answers~~~~ notworthy.gif

In freestyle, we usually don't use the heel brake (the rubber thing at the back of the wheels). Most slalomers I know would use T-brake, where one leg put behind, almost perpendicular to the direction of travel. Like a T.

However, there's a seperate discipline called sliding (in high quality...) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojeV0IlPahU

But note that this is a seperate discipline altogether, its not part of slalom.

Freestyle Sliding = Slalom + Slide + ...

Sliding wears out the wheels very quickly... which brings us to the point about rocker setup - if you slalom you would almost certainly want a rocker setup, since it is easier to turn on rocker setup. if you slide..goodbye to the nice rocker setup. =P

Are you from Malaysia? You have to see what your local shop has. Brands I would recommend are:

Seba - models FR1, FR2 are suitable for slalom and sliding, although its not the best, but it is a good start until you are better than you might want to upgrade. FR2 is cheaper. My Seba FR1 came with a flat setup, so you will have to buy extra wheels / change half of them to get a rocker setup.

Adreno Black Series - good as a basic freestyle skate, but i would say that it probably not as durable as Seba FR. Again, this depends how you treat the skates. Adreno, if I'm not wrong, comes with a rocker set up, so you can immediately start slalom-ing. You need not worry about the cuff screw coming off, you can just tighten the screw with an allen key after every few times you skate... Screws becoming loose affects most skates, its just that it tends to happen more often on the Adreno, based on what I see...

Rollerblade Twisters - these are almost the same as the Adreno Black Series. Hearsay that they are from the same factory.

You could ask your local skate community, there may be good skates that are available in your area that I'm unaware of... (:

Also note that you would have to find one with the best fit for your feet.

generally the same.

remove the bearings, clean them, oil them.

maybe make sure that all the screws are tightened.

Ahahahaha.... very sorry bro~~~ When i go back, i also feel that i've done some mistakes.

Actually I went to Putrajaya there from 7:00PM and wait you guys until 8:00PM near the "Pasar Malam" there, because we got the info that u guys will be playing skates at the Boulevard Putrajaya~~ Unfortunately i can't see someone who played inline skate at Boulevard there~~~ T_T
Then after waitin for a long time without got any results, me and my friend went to "Alamanda" first to have our dinner laugh.gif

After all, i try to calling my partner, Bichai, and ask him what should i do if i can't find u all around the Boulevard? He suggested me to take TAXI to go there again and try to find out near the "Mosque area" also.
So around 9:00 to 9:30 i went to Boulevard and Mosque area.
Then finally i saw some people played freestyle skate and this time I found Ben1~~ yay~~~ hahahaha.... But i can't spend much time at that moment, because my TAXI waitin at there. ^^ (sorry i can't take bus from that mosque, because i'm still blur with Putrajaya bus route)
Sorry Ben1, if i have much time i wanna ask you more about this freestyle skate and meet u MMU guys at there (and ask them some question too).
Oh ya~~~ I also want to take a lot of picture from you guys, but unfortunately after take a picture of Ben1 and record the interview the HP became low-batt. Very sorry for being not prepared-well enough.

May u all forgive us for being impolite like that~~~ (this is my first experience in interviewing people, so if there're things that were not acceptable please give some comments and may you all forgive us) biggrin.gif
Seriously i become interested in this sport when i do research about it. Seeing you guys playing it from Youtube, make me want to learn how to do it too (hahaha... i've never played roller skate b4). And oh ya~~ i also want to thanks you all for being so friendly to us and always answer our question.

*Hope this can explain our rudeness* notworthy.gif

Hmmm~~~ Anyway, Benbeaninc, you are not Ben1. Are you?
I thought you are the same person.... tongue.gif

Here is my photo with Ben1 brows.gif

the cone u 1 2 buy? cos my fren seems to be coming down here again on next week and i ll b going to singapore for a business trip on the end of this month

Anybody got recommendation for inline skates? I used to skate quite some time ago (like about 10 year plus) but was quite good at it. Now want 2 pick up again but donno which one maybe suitable for me since i in singapore so i mostly do urban inline or recreational inline.

So far i've narrowed my brands to rollerbaldes, k2 or roces. Just need to pick a particular model only.

k2 dulu?

I was thinking of getting either the k2 eco but that soft boot and i heard that soft boot wear and tear much faster then full bodied frame like rollerblades fusion x5 or twister 243 which i am also interested.

Coz if i am getting a pair, mostly for excercise which involves me using it to goto work since my residential house is about 1km from my workplace and i will be skating to and from my workplace.

My work place has a makeshift bath/toilet. But i dont like to use it for bathing since its not particularly clean.

I know of another office which has dedicated shower area where i used to go there since i had a contract job over there for a few weeks. It is a Norwegian company.

I now not sure whether to go for soft boot or hard boot. My choice i;ve narrowed down to either K2 or rollerblade.

I noticed that for freestyle, k2 offers only soft boots while rollerblade offers hard boot aka like the twister 243.

I want something which is more comfortable rather then outright performance on sidewalks. I will be purchasing mine online from the states since this is what they offer, plus they also have roces but i not so keen on them.

I have roughly tried on both rollerblades and k2 skates so i have a pretty good estimation of what boot size im gonna get. Since i've tried both brands but not the exact model.

personally i would recommend hard boot, even if its just for leisure skating.

i find it gives much more support, plus its more durable too.

yea... but my favourite slider is ernest lor... too imba... for girls mostly i support rebecca chew , Felicia Ong and Ziyi Kuek.. 3 of them are best... (felicia is the most craziest slider girl i can say)

Yesterday got some sales in singapore for a few brands of inline skates, tried the rollerblade x5. So long never skate not used to the skate and fell on my wrist, now damn hurting. Dman smooth wheels, was surprised how easy it was pick up speed.

I think i'll pass on the x5 and get me a beginner skate with a brake for now, later will upgrade when i upgrade my own skill.

Thought of getting either rollerblade or k2 but not sure which beginner level skate has the option of detachable brake.

Tried those china brand skates and sing sub 100 dollar skates, damn cheapo and got alot of flex.

The x5 was going for $369 that day, normal price was 550.
