Officer, 3 attackers dead in Indonesia police station assault

JAKARTA: Indonesian police shot dead three men on Wednesday (May 16) after one attacked them with a samurai sword, wounding two officers, at Riau police headquarters in Pekanbaru, Sumatra, an internal police report said.

A policeman was also killed in the attack.

One of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body, the report said. Another man was arrested and four others were suspected to have fled the scene, it said.

The report said that the men had driven their car into the police yard before getting out to stage the attack.

State news agency Antara said two journalists who had been at the police headquarters were also hurt in the attack.

TV footage showed one man lying on the ground with a long sword next to his body.

The group slammed a minivan into a gate and then attacked officers with swords.

"Three officers were injured and one later died in hospital," said local police chief Nandang.

Indonesian Army gets eight Apache helicopters

The Army received on Wednesday eight new AH-64E Apache attack helicopters purchased from the United States.

Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu symbolically handed over the eight helicopters to Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, represented by his logistics assistant Rear Admiral Bambang Nariyono.

Army chief of staff Gen. Mulyono, US Deputy Ambassador Erin McKee and several TNI and National Police officials attended the event.

The purchase of the eight Apache helicopters was announced by then US secretary of state Hillary Clinton in 2012, at a meeting with then foreign minister Marty Natalegawa in Washington DC.  The helicopter-purchase contract was signed following the announcement.

“Each helicopter is worth US$41 million. This helicopter is a technologically advanced primary defense weapon system. We hope these helicopters can strengthen the work of the Indonesian Army, which has a huge responsibility in safeguarding the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, especially on land,” said Ryamizard.

The minister said the eight helicopters were procured through the government’s partnership with the US government under the office management program to ensure the delivery of the helicopters ran smoothly.

“In principle, it was conducted under a government-to-government partnership. There was no broker, no mark up. The price of the helicopters was clearly stated,” said Ryamizard, adding that the helicopters could be used for all purposes and under all conditions. (ebf)

For the last several years we knew that the Army was planning to set up the fifth division in Sabah as part of the reorganisation which led to the formation of the west and eastern field commands. As a prelude to the setting up of the division, Task Force 450 was set up with its headquarters located in Kota Kinabalu.

However the talk of the setting up of the fifth division had died down recently likely due to the funding gap. A statement by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Wednesday revealed that funds were indeed available though it was used for something else.
