im budgeting around 5k,

Onkyo 605,
2 floorstanding speakers, 1 center, 2 bookshelfs (denon speakers quite good), probably add 1 more for 6.1
maybe Mordaunt Short subs (carnival 9 i think)

auditioned them already, and the sound is superb thumbup.gif makes ur next neighbor wanna come to your house every weekends..

and then probably im gonna look into this: Panasonic DMP-BD50

then im all set.. smile.gif

true, but not necessary for me.

1. I dont need those THXs. My HT room quite small. DTS-HD MA would be sufficient.
2. 3 HDMI inputs would be a waste for me. (unless there is a Astro HD decoder HDMI 1080i, and i dont think this gonna happen smile.gif )
3. I dont need video upscaling, my SD-DVD player is enough. Upscaling Astro is useless.
4. And i try to keep the cost as low as i could (retaining future-proof plan)
5. Plus, i wanna left some budget to blu-ray player.

Why u need more than 2 inputs?

"RM2589 for the SR605, RM3299 for the SR705" - quoted by forumer. Better put more dime in the speakers. Speaker plays a role in delivering superb sounds..

this thread seems slow eh?

maybe - but if BD players profile 2.0 (reputable brands) reached $179 or $99, then have to think twice lah !! i am not the kind that waste money to prove a point. the whole warner announcing exclusive support to BD 6 months to the end of their HD DVD contract scared the hell out of me of the power of $$$$ ! Warner had alwasy had this nice good guys image to me but. see how see how. Might give up movie all together as i gave up on Malaysian media.

yeah - look see look see how MS and Toshiba reacts. They might show their pocket aces - announcing going forward, Universsal, Paramount and Dreamworks will only sell combo HD DVD/DVD title of all their non catalogue titles. Courtesy of Toshiba subsidizing the cost differences off standard dvd replication. But that is a long shot biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

HD DVD players surpasses 1mil mark wink.gif

http://www.reuters.com/article/pressReleas...008+PRN20080107

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in
Las Vegas, the companies of the HD DVD Promotional Group recapped a
breakthrough year for the high definition format, reaching nearly one million
dedicated HD DVD players sold in North America and delivering on the promise
of affordability, quality and a consistent experience on every machine. With
a leading install base of dedicated players, there are now more than 400
titles available in the US and more than 1,000 titles available worldwide.
During the key five week holiday selling period, HD DVD software sales grew at
nearly twice the rate of Blu-ray, which was consistent with increased player
growth.

"Our focus from day one has been to deliver the highest quality hardware
and the best, most immersive home entertainment experiences for consumers at
affordable prices," said Jodi Sally, vice president of marketing, Toshiba's
Digital A/V Group. "With nearly one million dedicated players in the market
in North America, and a leading position in the PC market worldwide, we're
seeing software growth follow suit."

As the industry looks for a format that can break into the mainstream
consumer market, HD DVD continues to be the affordable, high quality leader,
setting the bar for a positive consumer experience. Through a combination of
quality and price, HD DVD meets the essential requirements for any format to
successfully reach the mass market.

Strong Hardware and Title Growth

In 2007, HD DVD reached a broader group of consumers than ever before,
showing strong movie title sales and high attach rates stemming from the major
influx of dedicated HD DVD players on the market. Based on Nielsen data, when
comparing first week consumer sales, "The Bourne Ultimatum" on HD DVD outsold
"Spiderman 3" on Blu-ray. Among all high definition formats, HD DVD still
maintains the highest attach rates -- more than twice the rate of Blu-ray.

"The HD DVD camp has always stuck to a simple set of principles," said Ken
Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for Universal
Studios Home Entertainment, and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group.
"Give consumers who buy into HD DVD what they paid for. In fact, give them
more than they expected. Show them that quality and value go hand in hand
with HD DVD. Show them what advanced interactivity really means and how it
can enrich your favorite movies that you watch over and over."

To this point, Toshiba's HD DVD players received several Editor's Choice
and Product of the Year awards from respected media outlets, including Sound &
Vision, Electronic House, E-Gear, and Ultimate AV.

On the PC front, the HD DVD Promotional Group announced that by the end of
2007, HD DVD-enabled PCs represented more than 80% of all high
definition-capable PCs. The HD DVD companies expect notebook PCs in particular
to be the variable that helps keep quality high, but prices low, by driving
down manufacturing costs for drives across all HD DVD players.

Global Studio Support

A critical milestone for HD DVD in helping to drive strong sales across
the board was the strong support from Hollywood studios and global content
providers. In 2007, HD DVD went from being supported by 41 studios and
distributors worldwide to 65.

Groundbreaking Interactive Features

Using Microsoft's HDi technology, HD DVD led the way in 2007 with
never-before-seen interactive experiences that have changed how consumers
interact with their favorite movies. HD DVD was the first to offer true
picture in picture director's commentary in 2007 with Warner's "300". This
feature was not included in the Blu-ray version, and showcases a key HD DVD
feature that caters directly to the fan community. Universal's "Heroes" and
Paramount's "Transformers" also included picture in picture features than
enhance the experience for fans.

HD DVD was also the first to deliver web-connected content, offering bonus
material on titles such as "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Heroes: Season 1," and
"Transformers" -- all offering downloadable content that's continually updated
so fans of the movie can return for new features. The interactive elements
are all designed to promote an enhanced "second look" environment and to rally
the fan communities around key titles. In addition, Universal launched
U-Shop, an extension of the U-Control feature, letting you buy items related
to a movie directly through the guaranteed internet connection on every HD DVD
player. Universal's "Evan Almighty" was the first title to showcase this,
illustrating what can be done when every player on the market can access these
features.

As the official successor to DVD, HD DVD has added to the heritage of the
most successful consumer electronics format ever, bringing the highest quality
HD experiences to consumers at the most affordable prices. The HD DVD Booth
at CES 2008 is located in South Hall 1 (booth #21266).

Your wish is half true. Panasonic BD50 but the price wont be USD179. smile.gif

But i still think HD-DVD is what consumer wants. Blu-Ray sales is more is because of PS3.

I dont want console game as my HDM player. and i think many will agree on this.

Studios will ultimately go for format that gonna give the cash to them.

The real battle after this will be SD-DVD and Blu-ray. Whether Blu-Ray will successfully replaces SD-DVD or not. If not, Its gonna end up like HD-DVD as well.

BD - most of the stuffs that they brag about specs and stuffs that do not concern general consumers and their hardware are expensive. BDA madely abundantly clear that they are in the business to make money out of selling hardware. The main proponent - the three strongest entity in the BDA are powerful CEs. I will wait and see if we will see cheap BD hardware soon enough to make the format take off if HD DVD throws in the towel wink.gif .

My theory is, as warner's decision did not make sense to me:

Warner does not think that their move will kill off HD DVD. Once they are out of the contract in ### month and receiving tons of money from Sony, they will continue to support HD DVD maybe killed of BD by going HD DVD exclusive. Warner's BD support announcement will extremely favour them in the sense that, they get tons of money. HD DVD and BD will still be competing driving hardware prices down even faster. Warner have IP in DVD and therefore HD DVD.

*****************

If hidef indeed doesnt take off, HD DVD can be marketted at value added feature to DVD as SACD to high end CD players. The same cannot be said about BD. wink.gif

so we will see.

i am still hoping that Toshiba will show their "pocket aces" and launching a HD DVD NOW marketing campaign. will Toshiba subsidizing combo replication to remaining exclusive studios so that they will drop standard dvd in favour of combo disks for all new releases from February til end of May. That will certainly make Warner's decision the most stupid move ever. Imagine Nielsen sales data HD DVD 99:1 Blu-ray for the whole 4 months biggrin.gif biggrin.gif - i cubiting myself so that i will wake up laugh.gif laugh.gif

Dude, I'm still waiting for your 'rumour' about which studio was thinking of switching over to HD DVD?
Can u come up with an answer and substantiate it?
Regarding keeping education to myself, I'm sorry I'm not selfish like you.

Ignorance is Bliss

And hey ferricide, the following link will get you excited and maybe u can start learning if you alleged that I'm educating, if I do, mainly because I'm willing to accept things:

i dont get it... im a firm supporter of Blu Ray....but i never tread on the HD DVD territory...

i predicted a format war will start...despite both Sony and Toshiba's best effort not to start one...

Thing is...i really am sad to see HD-DVD in the situation its in...the consumer who shelled out hundreds of dollars on a HD-DVD player might feel insecure.

IF...HD-DVD is dead...then fine i wont say anything bout it...but im confident that the format might have few tricks up its sleeve...

once again im not starting a flame war...i just put in my own opinions and i really hope i didnt offend anyone.
