Hi people,

I just wanted to know, is there a HD-DVD player that could decode the DTS-HD Master Audio internally and pass it through to 7.1/5.1 analog audio output? I came across this page on DTS website:

user posted image

full article: LINK

the reason is that I have a Onkyo TX-SR505 A/V Receiver that have 1080p passthrough only, no audio and have 7.1 analog inputs. Im gonna purchase new standalone HD-DVD soon, and i prefer not to throw away my current receiver but im eager to experience DTS-HD Master Audio on my ears. So far i cam across these:

Tosh HD-DVD HD-A35, but according to cnet.com, it output DTS-HD MA into bitstream through HDMI so receivers with onboard DTS-HD MA will decodes it.

I need a player that will decode DTS-HD MA internally and pass it through 5.1/7.1 analog output as in DTS website mention. Any opinions guys?

thanks smile.gif

For the time being, there are none. Decoding DTS-HD MA require a lot of processing power, your next best bet is what the PS3 is doing, transcoding it into Multi PCM. The technology has just moved to HBR bitstreaming, i doubt that there would be any standalones that could do the decoding internally in this near future.

The Onkyo SR505 may be able to do 1080p passthrough, but that refers to the video side only. To do 1080p on any HBR format, you need an HDMI 1.3a input + HDMI 1.3a cabling as well. Only the SR605 and beyond care equipped with HDMI 1.3a, im afraid.

Thanks for the reply smile.gif
done searching in the net, i found out none.
@ AVSForum, they also rumoring the next CES Tosh will come-up with standalone HD-DVD player with DTS-HD MA decoding under the hood (multichannel analog output). just a rumor.

So, currently standalone HD players that could decode HD audio (Dolby True HD, DTS-HD, but not DTS-HD MA) is available mostly with 5.1 analog output. (including Blu-ray side, Samsung BDP1400 looks good though).

So, probably im gonna go ahead with current players (Dolby True HD, DTS-HD). Been eyeing on Tosh HD-A35 and Sams BDP1400 for a while now. At least im still gonna get superb audio with multichannel analog rather than the player downconvert it to Legacy Dolby via Toslink.

cheers smile.gif

Apisgogo,

If you're still tuning in, i stand corrected on my statement that there are no HD player that can decode DTS HD-MA internally. There is one, but it is on the opposition's camp, BD. The upcoming Denon DVD-3800BDCI has built-in Dolby TrueHD AND DTS HD-MA within its innards. So all you need to do is string together the speaker cables to the back of this and instant HBR on your system, without the need of a receiver at all.

http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3749.asp

No news so far on the HD-DVD side of things on internal decoding. Most likely candidate would be either the Tosh XA3 or that Meridian HD-DVD player.

Thanks for the infos. I had came across this Denon Blu-ray player. looks impressive with a whacking price tag. But its worth the money, as you mentioned, all the holy grail of HD audio decoded under the hood and seems without a need of a receiver at all. we shall see the review to came out to judge.

found an interesting article about all these HD audio:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/feature_intro...olbytruehd.html
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/1064

How do the sound difference between DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD. Both are lossless audio. Seems that few reviews mentioned the quality is somewhat similar. Care to advise?

If the quality is somewhat similar, i may be settle on Tosh HD-A35 (as the player able to decode Dolby TrueHD and send them out along the 5.1 multichannel analog output) with my existing amp,

or else, just close my eyes and purchase the Onkyo 605 and be future proof as it could be smile.gif

decision... decision... decision...

hm...

i thought consumer power is much more influential rather than these studios back-ups. What i mean here is consumers, (especially me) always want affordable things, looking at HD-DVD's low start-up cost, i always think HD-DVD gonna wins.. but now, smile.gif

thats why i spend my money to set-up the audio parts 1st. smile.gif

i think dual format is not going to be a success.. consumers wants 1 format only...

look at the bright side, is this means we gonna see Tosh HD-A35 price flooring?

Blu-ray or HD-DVD dosent matter... Both capable of displaying quite remarkable picture... lets see how consumer will react and affect the buying decision as Blu replacing SD DVDs...

what matter to me most is HBR (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA).. Bit-to-Bit identical to master audio is superb...

So, even Blu winning, the HD audio format still the same right? coz im gonna make a heavy purchase on my av equipments to 'future-proof' myself..

smile.gif

im budgeting around 5k,

Onkyo 605,
2 floorstanding speakers, 1 center, 2 bookshelfs (denon speakers quite good), probably add 1 more for 6.1
maybe Mordaunt Short subs (carnival 9 i think)

auditioned them already, and the sound is superb thumbup.gif makes ur next neighbor wanna come to your house every weekends..

and then probably im gonna look into this: Panasonic DMP-BD50

then im all set.. smile.gif

api , 5k eh... i think u tambah abit more get the 705 lar, i guess the difference is quite minimal rite>

true, but not necessary for me.

1. I dont need those THXs. My HT room quite small. DTS-HD MA would be sufficient.
2. 3 HDMI inputs would be a waste for me. (unless there is a Astro HD decoder HDMI 1080i, and i dont think this gonna happen smile.gif )
3. I dont need video upscaling, my SD-DVD player is enough. Upscaling Astro is useless.
4. And i try to keep the cost as low as i could (retaining future-proof plan)
5. Plus, i wanna left some budget to blu-ray player.

well, its good to straighten ur tots

but the 2 inputs is a put off for me, relying on astro? better dun waste my time.....
but how much the difference?
*
smile.gif

Why u need more than 2 inputs?

"RM2589 for the SR605, RM3299 for the SR705" - quoted by forumer. Better put more dime in the speakers. Speaker plays a role in delivering superb sounds..

this thread seems slow eh?

maybe - but if BD players profile 2.0 (reputable brands) reached $179 or $99, then have to think twice lah !! i am not the kind that waste money to prove a point. the whole warner announcing exclusive support to BD 6 months to the end of their HD DVD contract scared the hell out of me of the power of $$$$ ! Warner had alwasy had this nice good guys image to me but. see how see how. Might give up movie all together as i gave up on Malaysian media.
yeah - look see look see how MS and Toshiba reacts. They might show their pocket aces - announcing going forward, Universsal, Paramount and Dreamworks will only sell combo HD DVD/DVD title of all their non catalogue titles. Courtesy of Toshiba subsidizing the cost differences off standard dvd replication. But that is a long shot biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
I gave up astro long long long time ago. if anyone wants the dish and decoder, feel free to come to my place i am will give the set away! wink.gif
*
Your wish is half true. Panasonic BD50 but the price wont be USD179. smile.gif

But i still think HD-DVD is what consumer wants. Blu-Ray sales is more is because of PS3.

I dont want console game as my HDM player. and i think many will agree on this.

Studios will ultimately go for format that gonna give the cash to them.

The real battle after this will be SD-DVD and Blu-ray. Whether Blu-Ray will successfully replaces SD-DVD or not. If not, Its gonna end up like HD-DVD as well.
