Hi, recently obtained a software developer job. Company is based in Singapore, while I from Petaling Jaya/Kuala Lumpur.

I am planning to rent a HDB unit.

So some questions I have:

i) Let's say I need to be in office 5x a week on weekdays, is it okay to travel back lets say every weekend now that borders have reopened? Tiring and expensive or not?

ii) If let's say I can negotiate and allow myself to work from home, and once in a while only need to go office, can I work from my house in PJ/KL?

iii) Use what mobile plan? I will still need a mobile line in SG and will be renting a HDB unit as well. Will travel up and down between Malaysia and Singapore very regularly (family reasons)

iv) Any other concerns I should be aware of?

Thanks!
*
1. For sure either tiring and cheap or expensive and fuss free. Bus services are available fixed fare.. but the thing about it you really need to travel back so often?
Airplane u need to book super early coz Fri nite/Sun evening return slots are in high demand.

If you have hybrid WFH days then can play around.. still able to get $100 return SIN-KUL in short notice (few weeks) if you play the days right

2. Up to your contract.. technically you still need to be contactable.. if a day or two i think should be fine. My teammate also went back to home country but still working.
I would be more concerned about your minimum stay of 183 days in SG in 2022 to be counted as a tax resident here (generally lower tax% here than MY tax bracket).

3. Singtel/Starhub prepaid are quite easy to get at the airport or any 7E. This would last u at least 90 days or so (depending if u take cheapest $8 or 2nd cheapest $15 SIM).
If you're not in a hurry you can get a hotlink from MY and roam here 1GB/day at RM10/day only first.
can go and hunt for a prepaid number at malls/dealer shop/7E/Esso Cheers/mini mart

As long as you have some form of data (u need to be able to operate google maps at the very least)
On foreign passport you can only sign up prepaid until you get your paperwork sorted.. you can try giga as well ($10/mo for 10GB and minutes, and can rollover unused data) https://giga.com.sg/#why-giga

For phone plan once you have a bank acc/EP card issued then you'd be able to slowly pick one from the main telcos (starhub singtel m1)

4. One peculiarity - AA batteries are made of gold here (freaking expensive) if you buy in any major supermarket.
I found GP AA 6pack for $1.30 for at heartland malls' little stores.. pay by shopeepay scan and pay -50c discount rclxm9.gif

Also don't buy shampoo and conditioner at major supermarket (unless really no choice)..for some reason they're kinda expensive for small bottles
the neighbourhood CK mart should be much cheaper for huge bottles

You will probably need to bring enough cash to cover at least 2 mos' rental (eg 1600-2k for a 1+1) and food for two months because it can take awhile for your paperwork to be set up BEFORE you can open a bank account.
Beware of rental scams! Size up the unit, shoe rack, and the landlord before handing over your deposit.

HDB rental make sure the landlord registers you inside the HDB portal ya.
Best to get a local friend to help you out at least (if pay cash no paper trail) - if Paynow got paper trail.

Can start looking on carousell or FB for shortlisting some units.
No need to stay exactly at the MRT station if the buses are frequent. How to tell? see bus stop got plenty of bus numbers (6-7 or even more) then easy coz established route area. If just 1-3 bus numbers it may take awhile to wait for buses.

If you rent an old flat, ensure the electrical board has been refreshed (i.e. looks new and not from the 70's). icon_rolleyes.gif You don't want the Bedok fire case to happen to you.
Also get the landlord to prove that the test button on the RCD @ DB box does cut the water heater power. This is important.

Bring along a couple pair of good sneakers.. you will definitely walk a lot here!

Good info, thanks! Should be stickied or something, so everyone planning to move over can read as well thumbsup.gif

Regarding ur point number 2, what do u mean 'if a day or two should be fine'? You mean contactable within a day or two to fly back to SG?

Point #2 means if you wanna "work in MY for a day or two" because Fri/Sun flights too expensive so you arrange WFH on Fri,Mon so as to enable you to take a Thurs night/Mon night flight cheaply wink.gif (i.e. play it cool to avoid the crowd)

If you don't think you'll be using your MY number often - now is the time to port to yoodo on the MY side with minimum commitment RM3/month just to keep the number for cheap laugh.gif

Does ayone here know if a Msian who is below the age of 50 but had already renounced the SPR and permanently residing in west Msia, what happens to the CPF account?
If not mistaken for west Msian, cannot close and withdraw the CPF money if the age is below 50.
Wondering between the years before the person reaching age 50, what happens to the CPF account that cannot be closed?
*
Still a ways to go before 50 but nothing happens to your CPF acct. It sits there getting the yearly dividend and then once you reach 50 or 55 or something you get to withdraw it (in my uncle's case CPF actually contacted him after he moved back to Msia and told him can withdraw liao cos u cukup umur).

HI, I have just got transferred to Singapore from Malaysia.

I would like to ask how is the traffic for going through Singapore custom if staying in JB nowadays.

I heard riding a motorbike or electric bike will be faster than bus or car. or maybe even a bicycle.

I'd like some advice on how long does it takes to wait in traffic and going through the whole process. Thanks.

No relocation or expat benefits come with your transfer?

Anyway if you can put up with waking up as early as 4:30am or 5:00am you can try taking motorbike or public transport

If driving on your own depart by 6:00 - 6:30am should be fine

Also per-COVID there used to be option to join carpool so you’ll have to follow the driver schedule ready at the pick up area

My bro just received an offer for SG position as senior eng. He is contemplating renting at Medini/Sunway Iskandar JB and doing the daily commute to Tuas Singapore. Anyone with any experience could kindly share it here. He is interested to know the time required for commute driving into Singapore.

I think the questions about time to cross Causeway & Tuas is getting too many here. Why don't you check this Live Traffic Camera during the peak hour to judge for yourself, weekend vs weekday

During my last few trip across woodland via bus and tuas by car.
Google maps were quite accurate.

You can adjust the time and date and get a guesstimate.

Receive an offer from SG, in dilemma whether to take it up or not.
Main Con is the stress level, and got to sacrifice some family time since plan to travel weekly…

Uni time before airasia expensive but also airasia not expensive? Don't so understand that part.

Oh usually those familiar faces taking the same flight weekly, why do they do so? Why did u do so? For you and them, is it mostly family/business related?

Also I saw this news on Lowyat.net that day (https://www.lowyat.net/2022/276286/firefly-resumes-flights-singapore/)...but when I checked the Firefly website, its not cheap also

Hello, sorry I have rental questions again. I was introduced to a landlord who was willing to rent out a room in their HDB flat for 3 months, but on an informal basis. This will not be acceptable for my EP because it's not registered with HDB, right? Anyone has experience renting a HDB flat for less than 6 months?

edit - addition questions:
1. What about living with a relative in a HDB, where no rental is involved? How does one fulfill the EP requirements? This is an option that I have, but prefer not to take.
2. Does MOM come to check where you live, and make sure that you stay there for at least 6 months (HDB) or 3 months (private apartment)?
3. If let's say I rent a HDB room for 6 months, break the contract after 3 months and move to another location, will there be any issues with the EP (assuming I've already negotiated the penalty with the landlord)?

Or basically any residential address will be sufficient to get the EP card processed, and where I stay doesn't matter, as long as it's updated by company/MOM?
