Thx for the support guys!

Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Why are we using MOPS/MOGAS to calculate the fuel prices? Why not use Brent/Crude oil prices? (Credit to Lone Wolf X)
Most probably the same reason why Australia & Singapore uses it.

"The petrol companies use Mean of Platts Singapore (“MOPS”) prices, not crude oil prices in their cost accounting and pricing decisions for retail petrol. Crude oil price is the price of unrefined oil while MOPS price is the price at which petrol companies purchase the refined wholesale petrol from the refineries. MOPS price tends to be higher than crude oil price as it includes the cost of refining the crude oil into wholesale petrol." - quoted from the www.ccs.gov.sg below

FYI - MOGAS is one of the product listed under MOPS

Layman term:
You don't eat Paddy, you eat cooked Rice. Same for your car, it doesn't take crude oil, it takes refined fuel - priced using MOPS for our region.
Paddy = Crude Oil Price
Cooked Rice = MOPS Price

I'm updating it on a daily basis (or 2 days at the latest smile.gif) so you can check whenever.

But really, you only need to check it at the end of the month - or the last few days of the month, just to get a feel of next month's price.

I'll update the first post if there are any changes thumbsup.gif

It's not confidential, just that the sources is hard to find. I credit 2 sources for me to find out how they actually calculate

http://etp.pemandu.gov.my/Related_Stories-...oil_prices.aspx
https://taizeekin.wordpress.com/2017/01/03/...price-yourself/

A fight with an idiot on FB early this month, made me calculate the fuel price myself to shut the idiot up rolleyes.gif Now I'm doing it just for fun, and for my own info since I pump RON97 (MOGAS97 is harder to find - last update was end of last year... sad.gif)

Take the historical values with a pinch of salt, as I didn't start to keep track the daily MOGAS95 prices until Feb 2017.

Yes, this is not a guesstimate. It's a calculated estimation - but the government may still price it higher or lower depending on whether they want to give some subsidy, or get some more money tongue.gif

The chart is RON95. I am using RON97, but couldn't find a free source to calculate it like RON95. The free source only provided the MOGAS97 information until 15 Dec 2016, and it suddenly stopped... Unless I pay for the updated daily figures (which I find silly for a personal hobby) I can't find any (free) source at the moment...

Anyway, the RON95 price is already a good indicator whether RON97 goes up or down or thereabouts.

Hi guys, just to share something I am doing just as a hobby - hope this helps you to estimate next month's fuel price - less of a surprise if it goes up and fuel up before the rush, or wait to fuel up until next month if it goes down smile.gif

Malaysian Estimated RON95 Fuel Price

I am using the government's formula to calculate the following month's fuel price. As far as I know, the calculation is quite accurate. There are some discrepancies ±RM0.05, but it should be close enough - some of the calculation has been confirmed by government sources.

Estimated fuel price for March 2017 - unchanged at RM2.30/Liter

Nah... I would call this malicious speculation. No basis whatsoever with no named sources - it might just be a figment of their imagination to drive hits to their website.

Our ringgit is getting slightly stronger and the price of refined oil price is getting lower toward the end of the month. As of yesterday, the price of RON95 for March 2017 is at an estimated RM2.2898/liter at the pump on average.

Futures is good enough and slight inaccuracies - including last month and previous month is actually off by 1 sen is a-ok. You need to pay to track the actual daily figures - and it's not cheap

http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...-sen-fuel-hike/
http://www.therakyatpost.com/news/2017/02/...t-for-february/

1. They mentioned RM2.262 per liter for Feb, I got RM2.2464 - a difference of 1.6 sen tongue.gif
2. They mentioned RM0.09 undercharging for Jan, and I got the same figure.

Don't know 28/2 MOGAS95 closing figures, but unless it goes up to like USD80 (impossible), estimated March 2017 fuel price will remain at RM2.30/liter, with a small chance to go down to RM2.35/liter.

My money is at 2.30.

I won't start tracking diesel, but I'll try to track RON97. I won't know how accurate that is until April's figure is released.

Estimated RON95 fuel price for March 2017 - unchanged at RM2.30/Liter, but there is a small chance that the government could reduce it to RM2.25/Liter.

As of 27/2, the average estimated RON95 fuel price is RM2.2879/Liter.

Edit 28/2: well, it looks like the estimation is right on target for March 2017 - fuel price is unchanged for RON95. I will try to start tracking RON97 figures for April as well, but take it with a large dosage of salt as it is unproven, and there is no way for me to get historical values to test. Look towards this page for April estimated fuel figures!

Thx for the support guys!
*
Boleh tahan man your formula spreadsheet. Although price of petrol RON95 is unchanged for this month, I noticed that there were many motorists lining up at petrol stations yesterday at around 8.00pm. Not too sure at what time the news on the petrol price was announced yesterday.

If your estimation proves to be accurate for the next coming months, then it would be useful as we can all avoid jamming up the petrol stations during the final hours just before 12.00 am midnight going into the next month.

Fuel prices deregulated from next month , maximum set by gomen, retailers free to follow or set lower

TS should start developing smartphone app to display lowest pump price in vicinity

My take on it is that - the weekly fuel announcement mechanism, and subsequent "petrol price war" that they intend, we will need to see how it goes. This thread might be of use, or might not be useful at all. I'll keep tracking and updating it - as I said, for my hobby. Feel free to check it out, if not, then don't check it biggrin.gif

Anyway, did a scenario what will happen if we did a weekly petrol pricing:

Week 1 (30/1-3/2) - RM2.27 (RM2.25?)
Week 2 (6/2-10/2) - RM2.29 (RM2.30?)
Week 3 (13/2-17/2) - RM2.30
Week 4 (21/2-24/2) - RM2.28 (RM2.30?)
Week 5 (27/2-3/3) - RM2.20

So it's better for the consumer. I'm not sure how the mechanism will announce - every Friday? Every Saturday/Sunday? Every Monday? Will need to see how the system works definitely...

Anyway, I highly doubt that petrol stations will offer lower than the "ceiling" price... But we shall see.

If regulated right, we will see this as beneficial to us consumers because it promotes price competition. If they are done wrong just like what happened in Thailand, we are sure going to suffer when monopoly occurs.

I am a bit afraid of how it's going to pan out for us. We just need to be resilient enough to sustain the constant rising cost. Sigh.

Yup, thanks for the tag, will update the spreadsheet to take into account 23 March - 29 March (7 days) for the first weekly oil price announcement.

It's kind of good though coz the current market rate of fuel is about RM2.10 at the moment biggrin.gif

Ok guys, I had updated the spreadsheet to match the government's announced pricing - Announce on Wednesday evening, but effective on Thursday. I can only do an estimate on Thursday - Tuesday petrol pricing, as I do not have real time information access on Wednesday's price, but it should be close enough.

as of 24/3, the price would be RM2.10 for RON95 and RM1.95-RM2.00 for diesel. Petrol price is stabilising these past few weeks, and our ringgit is growing stronger.

The RON95 source is quite close to what the government is doing. Diesel price is way off - not sure because of the source is different? But in the beginning of the month, it was looking very similar to current prices.

In any case, it's quite interesting to see this price difference. May need a couple of weeks of monitoring to see what was causing the difference. It can be either the government is pricing it higher to get more tax from it (profit from higher price of RON95/Diesel) or it's to allow the petrol companies to offer discounts - hence why they need to get approval from the government to offer discounts/promotions since they are taking the government's profits away... hmm.gif

Hi guys, just to share something I am doing just as a hobby - hope this helps you to estimate next week's fuel price - less of a surprise if it goes up and fuel up before the rush, or wait to fuel up until Thursday if it goes down smile.gif

Malaysian Estimated RON95 & Diesel Fuel Price Calculation Spreadsheet

Estimated RON95 fuel price for Week ending 19 April 2017 - down by 1 sen at RM2.23/Liter. (as of 17 April 2017)
Need more data on Diesel prices...

All indications is that fuel price will be either unchanged or slightly down by RM0.01. No need to rush to fuel up, or just wait until Thursday to fuel up. Our currency has gotten slightly stronger since last week, and oil price has stopped climbing up.

source (1), source (2)

Thx for the support guys!

(as of 18 April 2017)

Thanks guys, but do keep in mind that the estimated figures are ±RM0.05 - i'm not using official figures to calculate it, so there might be discrepencies.

Another source also had their estimate to be +RM0.03 this week - anyway we shall know what it'll be tonight biggrin.gif

Our Saturday is their Friday tongue.gif

But the Ringgit does not trade over the weekend though... hmmm... let me run a couple of scenarios to see how they derive that 3 cents increase. E.g Maybe they used all 3 ringgit values through the day i.e opening, mid-day and closing time?

Anyway - 14/4 no MOGAS95 trade coz Good Friday holiday in Singapore

Thks guys for the tracking n can treat this as an outlier. Hopefully next week prices will be lower now tht Petronas dealers are allowed to give discounts - according to Paultan website.

Now need some genius to come up with an app/website to check discounts or prices ☺

The CME website used by TS is referencing futures prices, there are other types of prices which are spot and contract prices.

As to your question the only way to know if you have subscription to MOPS.

Also the CME website does not mention the grade of the fuel, is it EURO2, EURO4, EURO5, BIODIESEL5, BIODIESEL7 standard.

So I believe (haven't found concrete proof) that this is causing the difference in the calculation.

It's true: Source from Sinchew Newspaper.

柴油:RM2.08(下降6仙)

It's still early this week, but indications is that the fuel price will be going down again next week! In fact, if they took into account yesterday's oil price, it should be around RM2.05 per liter at the most...

Daily fuel price yesterday was RM2.02 and the day before was RM2.01. 1st May daily fuel price was RM2.00. Things are looking good for now!

from exchange rate 1 USD = 4.33 RM, and MOPS US / Barrel is 60.682, it indicates the petrol most likely would be RM 1.97... let see the trend for coming days as still too early

Ok guys, unlike last week where the MOPS was averaging around USD61.62, and the exchange rate was USD1 = MYR4.34, this week, MOPS is averaging around USD63.5 and the exchange rate is USD = MYR 4.35. Fuel price will 95% go up -
things can still change, but highly unlikely.

So fuel up before Thursday if you can. It is estimated that it'll go up by 5 sen.

Yes, it'll most likely go up, but it's not due to the petrol station operators... it's has always been priced MOPS + exchange rate. not public sentiment.

Usually I update on Saturday, more meaningful because we have Thursday and Friday's figures - and we can estimate what would the price be on the following week. Wednesday's figures would only be published on Thursday morning 8am, a but too late to make any difference, so I will also update it on Saturday smile.gif

Just one comment, shouldn't the wording be 'week ending 7 July , or week starting 31 May ' for fuel pricing beginning this Thursday 1 June ?

The daily price of RON95 fuel as at closing time yesterday, is about RM1.93. If things remain unchanged until next week, we may see a drop of 4-5 sen in next week's fuel price. So keep praying that our Ringgit grows stronger, and MOGAS95 keeps on dropping/remain stable below USD60

Not necessarily. Our ringgit might go down the toilet if the MOGAS95 (via Crude oil) drops too much since we are also exporting oil.

BATU KURAU: A new formula to fix fuel prices will be announced next week, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin.

He said the move was to ensure stability in the domestic oil industry.

He added that the ministry would be holding a meeting with oil industry players next week to discuss the formula.

"The people must sympathise with petrol station operators who suffer losses when oil prices drop. They (petrol station operators) feel they are the victims (when prices drop)," he told reporters after attending a Ramadan function here Friday.

He added that he would be asking the Government to assist petrol station operators as they had been badly affected by the uncertainty in oil prices.

The retail prices of petrol and diesel have been on a downward trend lately.

Since April 1, the retail prices of RON95, RON 97 and diesel are set on a weekly basis.

It was previously on a monthly basis based on the managed float system. - Bernama

The culprit is powderful gomen, in assuring and protecting fixed margin of RM0.05(?) per litre meaning hundreds of millions, if not billions profit per year ........
for all the powderful oil companies, in particular Petronas .......
who faces no business risks with 'guaranteed' profit ..........
whilst 'weakling and poor' individual station operators absorb all the 'business' risks vis-a-vis consumer intersts ....... which had been ignored and neglected since times memorial ..........

The gomen today 'seems' to care for their vote banks in certain segments of general consumers ......... for eyeing your 'cheapo' votes in upcoming GE's.
How can GLC's and MNC's are 'guaranteed' billions of yearly profits at the expense of small chicko and helpless station operators ....... and divide and rule as always ......
making small chicko operators fighting for survival against small consumers .........
blaming general consumers as causing hardship to small chicko station operators .......
Sounds familiar in our public affairs ??

Dunno what's the new formula gonna be like, but it sucks... I think they'll cave in to the demands of the petrol dealers to cap the increase or decrease of fuel price to 5sen a week. It's a double edged sword, if it's a major increase, it won't sting as bad, but if it's a major decrease, we lose out...

New estimate has been posted on Page 1.

Estimated RON95 fuel price for Week ending 21 June 2017 - it's gonna go down by 4 cents to RM1.94/Liter ±RM0.05... (as of 16 June 2017)
Need more data on Diesel prices...

Early indications is that the fuel price will be going down again next week. Wait until Thursday to Fuel up. Our currency is growing stronger to the dollar, and MOGAS95 price has dropped since last week. Hopefully things will get better and better...

You may be right - MOGAS95 prices are slightly climbing and our ringgit is slipping slightly since Thursday. We would know better tomorrow morning with today's prices.

As at this Morning, price continue to drop. 4sen drop possible now.

On the issue of those stn owners making losses whenever price drop, I think another viable way is for them to fix their own pricing to the lowest of govt weekly announcement.

Well wth this, the stn owners can sell off the remaining last week price b4 gradually switch over to the lowest offering.

Probably my stupid idea..haha..knowing nothing on how price fixing mechanism works

Weekly Fuel Prices Announcement Will Remain - Hamzah

Last update: 20/06/2017

PUTRAJAYA, June 20 (Bernama) -- The ceiling prices for petrol and diesel will be announced every week as is currently being implemented, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

However, he said the new formula to determine the fuel prices aimed at stabilising the national oil industry was still being studied.

Hamzah said he had met with the oil industry players to discuss the formula to ensure that it would not disadvantage any party.

"There are people who want the announcement to be made from weekly to monthly. No, the system that we have right now will remain," he told a press conference after the ministry's monthly assembly here today.

On Friday, he said a new formula for fixing retail prices of fuels would be announced to prevent petrol station operators from suffering losses if the fuel prices continued to fall under the current method.

Hamzah said the government wanted a win-win formula for all parties, including consumers who would also be affected if petrol station operators went bankrupt.

"Currently, the average distance of a petrol station from another is about 25km, so if one shuts down, it will be difficult for consumers who will need to go far to refuel," he said.

Currently, there are 3,500 petrol stations operating nationwide.

Commenting on MBI International, alleged to be a pyramid scheme, Hamzah said a thorough investigation would be carried out even if the company claimed they did nothing wrong.

"Our investigation is to ensure that everything they (the company) are doing is legal," he said.

Yesterday, the enforcement division of the ministry busted the syndicate in an operation code named Ops Token 2 conducted with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), police and the Attorney-General's Chambers.

In the operation at three different locations, in Butterworth, Penang and Taman MBI, Kulim, Kedah, a total of RM688,000 cash and three luxury vehicles were seized while RM30 million from the suspect's bank account was frozen.

A total of 98 bank accounts with RM209 million have also been frozen.

-- BERNAMA

So, current method remains the way forward for now.

I think this will be the last drop coz looking at the trend of the increasing USD-MYR exchange rate, I think that next week's fuel price will be increased.

As usual, anything can change - so lookup on Saturday for early estimates

I'll just close the thread once this happens and wish everyone best of luck! biggrin.gif

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin has said the current weekly retail fuel price arrangement will remain while the government looks for a better way of setting the retail price.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister said whatever arrangement is reached must satisfy consumers and petrol station operators.

"We will not go back to the monthly system. We are looking for a holistic solution which will satisfy everyone.

"We are seeking for a method that will allow us to liberalise (the industry) to satisfy all parties," he told reporters after attending the 2017 Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) Aifilfitri friendly session in Putra World Trade Centre.

He said liberalising the industry could also mean setting prices on a daily basis. However, he did not elaborate further.

The weekly swing in retail fuel prices had reportedly causing headache to petrol station operators, with many of them lamenting of giving up their operations due to the suffered loss.

The latest fuel prices announced last Wednesday saw a decrease in fuel prices for the fifth week in a row, with the retail price of RON95 set at RM1.89 per litre, RON 97 at RM2.15 and diesel at RM1.84.

Hamzah said he had been engaging with the Finance Ministry as well as stakeholders in the industry in finding the correct formula to determine petrol prices.

He added some operators had complained of feeling the pressure when fuel prices decreased continuously for weeks.

"There must be a win-win situation between oil companies, petrol station operators and the people," Hamzah said.

He said public feedback he had received in the past few days was positive, with many were happy with the recent drop in petrol prices especially during the festive season.

The same thing however could not be said on petrol station operators, Hamzah said, adding that many of them had called for a discussion to be held with the ministry.

"They had told me that they were facing a bit of a stressful problem and getting anxious on Wednesday (when new fuel prices were announced)," he said.

Earlier during the aidilfitri event, a total of 40 orphans from Rumah Amal Budi Bestari received a cash contribution of RM6,000 from MyIPO, which was handed over by Hamzah.

More than 800 people attended the event, which comprised of staff from MyIPO and other invited guests.

Welp. Back to work smile.gif

It was previously reported the government is looking at a new fuel pricing mechanism to liberalise the industry, which will likely result in prices being announced on a daily basis rather than the current weekly method. However, such a pricing mechanism will not be introduced this year, according to the domestic trade, co-operatives and consumerism (KPDNKK) minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin.

In a report by NST, he said the ministry is still developing a new formula for the mechanism. “Now, we are announcing (the prices) every week. We will continue to do it until everyone understands their responsibilities, be it oil companies, station operators or consumers,” he said.

“Consumers will need to have a group or an application to help them to find where to get the cheapest petrol. When the time has come, we will do it,” he continued. This will allow fuel retailers the chance to compete with one another by providing the best prices to attract customers.

The minister also said he will meet with fuel retailers next week, and will make an announcement on the weekly fuel pricing mechanism following that. Recently, the Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) said the weekly fuel price announcements were “unhealthy,” and resulted in many petrol station operators having to shut down due to losses suffered.

Actually I think it's reasonable because the price went down during Raya but mops price went up

So maybe it's covering back the losses

Most important is not who is most right (guessing how many cents - most important info is fuel price either go up or go down tongue.gif

Govt is making back their losses incurred during the hari raya period where they went down by almost 10sen compared to market price brows.gif

Normally I'll update:

Day of Data Day I'll Update
Thursday & Friday Saturday afternoon or Sunday Morning
Monday Tuesday Morning
Tuesday Wednesday Morning

Wednesday data - usually I'll update on Saturday or Sunday as well coz the data is updated on Thursday morning - too late for calculation. Reason why I don't update data for Thursday immediately the day after is because it's just 1 data - I'd rather wait for at least 2 days of data for it to be meaningful.

But then, the info is just an estimate, using the government's calculation - they can still choose to price it higher (as per this week) or lower (as per the raya week) as they like. That's why it's great to have people with inside information - which they would post between Monday - Wednesday.

for us to schedule and plan our upcoming visit to petrol pumps.

Today's insider info I received is very vague, anyway here it goes :

Petrol +1/-1
Diesel +1/-1
or
No change

Imo no matter up or down, it wouldn't affect much since it's only 1 sen

Don't think it'll affect us as our fuel is refined here in Malaysia and Singapore iinm. But see above a few posts to see an insider info on the fuel price. It's way higher than it's supposed to be.

Need your feedback on this, since you have insider info or you actually work for KPDNKK devil.gif

Is the calculation using actual MOPS price from PLATTS? Not the MOPS futures stated on the frist page which is from CME Group.

Or are we getting F***** over

Thanks for you feedback, I'm heading off to fill up

* Singapore Mogas 95 Unleaded (Platts) Futures Quotes

MOPS actual daily price differs from the Futures price published by CME
Hence the difference in the calculation and the actual price announced on Wednesday
So I wouldn't be surprised even if the price is higher later this week

Went to pump today. Quite long queue.

Suddenly petrol station operators are quiet... No longer asking for either daily revision or limited price change.

That's why I said always check the first post, coz i always update it tongue.gif

Anyway, I think it'll be RON95 increased by 5 sen. increased by 5 or 6 sen is insignificant difference anyway, still increase....
