Sorry I can't help much.

For legal movie, I use Apple iTunes Movies or previously Google Play Movies.

For not legal movie source, I download the movie and build my own movie server using Plex for Android TV and Infuse connected to Plex client in Apple TV.

For TV series, I subscribe to Netflix.

You are on point. We know already.. No contest.. Thing is, if your friend wants to learn the hard way by spending first and regretting soon..? Then by all means, let em go ahead.. He/she will either be happy or frustrated in which case, you can give the "I told you so" look. Some people simply just prefer to waste time..  laugh.gif

True, I can only give him my input based on the information shared by the experienced people in this thread. But if he chooses to go with something else, well like you always say "your money, you decide" biggrin.gif
Since his needs are simple, it should suffice for now.

Kodi is the thing I don't like. Haha! Try but never like.

Actually those no adv most is clean just need to carefully get as a lot site is fake one. Anyway I not using any of it also because all those not meet my required picture quality and also stream performance.

This^^.. Even though I don't have any personally identifiable info (well, besides watch history and IP).. I'd rather not have to deal with a rogue app that ends up infecting my network and possibly other connected devices. Heck, some bad apps, actually use one's device to mine crypto or act as a botnet.. Later get letter from ISP threatening to suspend the account. My pal kena such nonsense.. I'm fairly careful and can handle the dark sides of the net.. So no biggie there.. Just prefer Kodi's simplicity and grabbing apks from clean sources. biggrin.gif

Mind defining "budget".. Give a price range or max amount. OR, get the good stuff and keep far from reach of younger ones.

No suprise. Netflix is very particular. Those not official is using not official way.

Poor now want Netflix on at least HD only left Nvidia Shield, Mi Box., Apple TV 4K and all Amazon Fire TV/Cube.

Also off course all recent smart TV apps.

Ya.. Good thing I don't rely on my box for that.. Netflix app on a four year old TV still gets updated till date.. Those who want in FHD+ have to stick to above listed...till a fix is found...Hopefully..

Ya, there goes my recommendation to my pal about Netflix on his box. Luckily, he's not the "must be FHD" type bloke. So he don't care.. Got it more for Blu-ray playback and iptv.. So he's okay.. sweat.gif

AFAIK, Hulu & Prime aren't affected as such. Those still rely on VPN/DNS services to bypass. Once accepted, just stream on.. thumbup.gif

wan to ask netflix,
my androidtv when play youtube/kodi max resolution is fhd.
it can only get uhd when using external player via hdmi.

normally i able to check the resolution when i press Info at remote control.
but when i click Info while using netflix, it got bypass with netflix download info speed and the resolution.

the question is when i use netflix, it show 2160 download quality content.
so does the netflix really show 4k resolution...?
or only the source video is 4k but the resolution is still 1080?

ps... my tv is skyworth... 55" android tv

Most likely a firmware limitation.. Internal apps limited but it's able to process UHD signals from external devices via HDMI.. I've gotten similar.. Youtube app received update and max res stuck at 720P instead of 1080p... All other apps including Netflix are able to attain 1080p. However (like you), I'm able to get 4K YouTube content (down to 1080p of course) from an external box... You'll have to contact the TV manufacturer for an update.

normally i able to check the resolution when i press Info at remote control.
but when i click Info while using netflix, it got bypass with netflix download info speed and the resolution.

I don't understand this bypass part.. On my Samsung, it's able to show speed, resolution and playback timings. This info might differ from TV model to model.

the question is when i use netflix, it show 2160 download quality content.
so does the netflix really show 4k resolution...?
or only the source video is 4k but the resolution is still 1080?

Basically, If you have a Netflix UHD subscription and Netflix's servers recognize your device as UHD compatible (officially or not).. UHD titles will have the UHD logo beside them and the servers will try to (network speed and stability dependent) push UHD to your TV.

ps... my tv is skyworth... 55" android tv

Well, you took a gamble there.. Most Android TV OS powered TVs can be buggy and stuff breaks.. Good thing it, some manufacturers stay on those bugs and issue fixes via updates.. Personally, I stick with the big guys.. Samsung, LG, Sharp & Sony..
