some bad news here for X-FI user....

i look for my card very detail 2 days ago and i found a lot of 'G-Luxon' capacitors were used in analogue part of the card, and i just found in HERE and HERE G-Luxon was 'well known' bad cap... shocking.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

So, X-Fi user please prepare for the SQ degradation coming as time passed by...

EDIT: Jamicon cap too.... sweat.gif

got a really interesting question to ask you guys...

is there any difference in audio quality output between XP xfi driver VS vista xfi driver using the same EQ, same settings?

I'm currently using Vista but somehow everytime i use back XP and listen to my songs, it did sound a bit different, XP output seems to be abit better. I'm not sure whether it's just me or the driver really got different effects on the output .

i hv the same feeling also. in the end i switch back to xp.. another reason i switched back to xp is creative sc driver works better in xp  doh.gif

I feel the same thing as you...X-FI sound in Vista is rough in treble and lost detail in midrange...not too much, but is significant for me...I discovered this difference just 2 weeks ago, before that i play music in XP for so long time, thats why i feel the difference...

And i do RMAA test in Vista too, the frequency response curve got ripple after 4kHz, not as flat as in XP....

omg!... at least i'm not the only one who "felt" the difference...  sweat.gif

this is sad...really sad situation that creative users are being forced to into.

by the way, i'm back on XP now. What a lousy feeling. I'm so familar with Vista and now I'm back with a stone age OS, just to get those little audio details back.. vmad.gif mad.gif

Ya, once you enter Vista you don't wish to go back XP, but what to do, we are so 'degil' on SQ....

you should post the pic of your "disintegrated" HD2.  laugh.gif

just curious..what kind of problem did you encounter with the beta? maybe i missed your post in Audiotrak thread. care to mention it again?

x-meridian! good for music~ but hard to get..
agree. the support is important!
yeah wondering wats the issue huh?
*

I've posted it in HD2 bulk thread

*sigh. I recommend you guys don't look for soundcard if you really into music. A good modern onboard soundcard is good enough, and plug it to external DAC via optical or coax. That is the best way to get the best sound quality

But need to be careful when choosing onboard soundcard, digital/optical out should be perfect bit-matched, but what i saw most of the onboard sound digital signal can alter by using the sound effect/EQ setting,my onboard ALC850 is real example, so i highly doubt that the digital signal are come from ADC instead pure digital bit stream....

I already stated modern, all the HD (read: non AC97 based) onboard are capable of bit perfect output on both digital and analog, unfortunately your ALC850 is not the new HD based one, its still AC97 based codec.

Its simple, just disable everything, on my Analog Device AD1988, I just enable digital out only and disable everything else on the driver control panel. Its quite clean, even cleaner than SB Live! SPDIF out, which just a bunch of hiss

What are you talking about ADC? The suond coming from PC is digital, not analog so it doesn't need to converted. The ADC is for recording analog sound like from your microphone. Looks like you need to read more about how PC sound works

lol...not read your thread clearly...sorry about that... tongue.gif notworthy.gif

about your last statement, i want to state that i know how PC sound works, i only misunderstood the digital out of my onboard sound was come from ADC because the EQ/sound effect setting of my soundcard control panel can alter the output, which make me thought the sound is DAC>>ADC>>digital...lol....big misunderstood....

BTW, thanks for your correction... notworthy.gif

Yap, i tried before, but i think the youpax driver(done by Daniel_K) i installed before only bring back the DTS/Dolby Digital features, i didn't notice any SQ improvement over Creative's driver...

rclxms.gif thanks for ur test, i have waiting so long...but do u use XP now? since this test was done on Vista, what i saw was the frequency response got ripple after 2kHz, if can, do the test on XP will be good enough....

From ur test i noticed positive results of ur mod, really good, especially the THD and IMD+noise, 0.000X% compare to my 0.1XX%(although we really can't differentiate the THD<1%)...overall ur mod increase the SQ at least in terms of test figure rclxms.gif

BTW, ur test results convince me to mod the card...

this is just the objective test for the sound card, from the figure u will know how best your sound card is...but this one only objective test, real world subjective listening might not the same, depends on the taste of user...

sometime this test is use to test
1.whether the sound card achieve the parameter claimed by manufacturer.
2.to know the characteristic of the frequency curve.
3.to compare the sound card.
4.as a tool to know the results of mod.
